MG EXE181: The Land-Speed Record Concept With a Target Cd of 0.181

MG’s EXE181 pairs an electric concept-car design with land-speed-record inspiration. Its headline speed and aerodynamic figures are targets, not verified results.

MG’s EXE181 is an electric concept inspired by the marque’s land-speed-record history—not a production car or a verified speed-record holder. At Auto China in April 2024, MG announced a target drag coefficient of 0.181, a target top speed of 415 km/h (about 258 mph) and a target 0–100 km/h time below one second. Those are company-stated concept targets, not independently demonstrated results.

What is the MG EXE181?

The EXE181 is MG’s electric concept for revisiting the idea of a purpose-built land-speed car. MG unveiled it at Auto China on April 25, 2024, presenting its distinctive aerodynamic form and ambitious performance figures as a design study. MG’s later materials continue to identify it as a concept; the available announcements do not establish a production version.

New Atlas reported on the concept the following day and speculated that it might reach production. That was the publication’s speculation, not an MG commitment. MG’s Auto China announcement is the primary source for the EXE181’s stated concept specifications.

What do the EXE181’s speed and aerodynamic figures mean?

MG gave the EXE181 a target top speed of 415 km/h (about 258 mph), a drag coefficient (Cd) target of 0.181, and a target time of less than one second from 0 to 100 km/h. These figures describe what MG said the concept was intended to achieve; they are not verified performance results or specifications for a production car.

A drag coefficient is a measure of aerodynamic drag, not a direct measure of how fast a vehicle can go. A low Cd alone does not establish top speed, which also depends on factors such as frontal area, available power, gearing, tyres and operating conditions. MG’s published targets therefore should not be treated as proof that the EXE181 has been tested at 415 km/h or completed a sub-one-second sprint.

How does it relate to the original MG EX181?

The EXE181 takes its name and inspiration from the earlier EX181, a record-setting MG built for speed trials. MG says the original car set a 1957 Class F world record of 245.64 mph (395.31 km/h) at Bonneville. That recorded figure belongs to the historic EX181—not the electric EXE181 concept.

The two cars also belong to different eras and serve different roles: the original EX181 was a record car, while the EXE181 is a contemporary concept. MG’s account of the historic car says it used a 1.5-litre MGA Twin Cam engine with a Shorrock supercharger and twin SU carburettors, producing 290 bhp at 7,300 rpm. Those are specifications of the original, not the concept. MG’s Goodwood release recounts the historic car’s record and technical details.

Where has MG shown the concept?

After its Auto China unveiling, the EXE181 appeared as part of MG’s centenary presence at the 2024 Goodwood Festival of Speed. Its public display brought the concept’s land-speed-record theme to a major motoring event; it did not amount to an announcement of production or a performance test.

What does the 2025 design award confirm?

MG announced on May 13, 2025, that the EXE181 won the iF Design Award in the Concept Vehicle category. The award is a design milestone. It does not independently verify the car’s speed, acceleration or drag coefficient, and it is not evidence of a production plan. MG’s award announcement names Carl Gotham as the design lead.

Can you buy an MG EXE181?

The available MG announcements describe the EXE181 as a concept and do not confirm a retail model. There is no supported basis here for treating it as an orderable car or comparing it with production vehicles as though its target figures were measured specifications. For now, its significance is as a design concept connecting MG’s contemporary electric-car imagery with the marque’s record-car past.
