Mercedes-Benz says it is pausing its Level 3 DRIVE PILOT system for the launch of the new S-Class in Germany, California and Nevada—not cancelling it permanently. The company says an improved, faster version is expected in coming years. Its statement concerns the new S-Class launch and does not say that DRIVE PILOT has been disabled in cars already equipped with it.
What Mercedes has announced
In its 2026 annual general meeting materials, Mercedes-Benz management said: “We are pausing the Level 3 system available in Germany and the US states of California and Nevada for the launch of the new S-Class.” Management also said a new, improved and faster version is expected in coming years. The statement does not describe the move as a permanent cancellation. Mercedes-Benz 2026 AGM materials
The announcement is about the system’s place in the new S-Class launch in those markets. It does not establish that existing DRIVE PILOT-equipped vehicles have had the feature remotely switched off, nor does it provide a service-status update for those cars.
Why is it being paused?
Auto Motor und Sport reported in January 2026 that the facelifted S-Class would drop optional DRIVE PILOT, citing development costs relative to customer demand as the reason. That explanation is the publication’s reporting; Mercedes-Benz’s later management statement confirms the pause and affected markets but does not give that rationale. auto motor und sport, January 23, 2026

What “eyes-off” Level 3 driving means
Mercedes describes DRIVE PILOT as SAE Level 3 conditional automation. Within defined operating conditions and areas, it can take over certain driving tasks, allowing the fallback-ready user to take their hands off the wheel and eyes off the road. The user must still be ready to take control when prompted; this is not unrestricted or driverless operation. Mercedes-Benz USA DRIVE PILOT information
That responsibility distinguishes Level 3 from the Level 2 assistance described on Mercedes-Benz USA’s MB.DRIVE page: Level 2 requires the driver to remain engaged and monitor the road. The permitted operating conditions and vehicle availability also differ by system. Mercedes-Benz USA MB.DRIVE information

Mercedes-Benz USA identifies the S-Class and EQS sedan as models associated with DRIVE PILOT, but warns that availability depends on vehicle options, compatible wireless networks, country or state, and applicable law, and may change. That general model information is not confirmation that the feature can currently be ordered on a particular vehicle or in a particular market.
