The Mercedes-Maybach SL 680 Monogram Series turns the SL into a two-seat, open-top Maybach built around bespoke design and comfort, while retaining a 577-hp V8 and all-wheel drive. Mercedes-Benz’s specifications make it a formidable luxury GT, but they do not establish that it “crushes” a Rolls-Royce: the company has not published a comparable rival specification or back-to-back test.
What is the Mercedes-Maybach SL 680?
It is a Maybach-badged version of the Mercedes-Benz SL: a two-seat roadster with a folding soft top. Mercedes-Maybach describes it as the sportiest model in Maybach history and the marque’s first two-seater roadster. Its proposition is unusual for the badge: combine open-air driving and SL performance hardware with Maybach-specific materials, detailing, and comfort-oriented tuning.
The launch model is called the Mercedes-Maybach SL 680 Monogram Series. Mercedes presented two design themes, Red Ambience and White Ambience, each with two-tone paint and its own interior treatment. The styling includes a Maybach-pattern acoustic soft top, an upright Mercedes star on the hood, illuminated grille details, rose-gold accents, and 21-inch forged wheels. Extensive MANUFAKTUR leather is part of the interior presentation.
An optional PixelPaint hood pattern is produced through a multi-stage paint process that includes hand sanding, according to Mercedes-Benz. That is a customization feature, not a performance upgrade.

How much does the Maybach SL cost?
The U.S. price depends on model year. Mercedes-Benz USA announced a $224,900 starting price for the 2026 SL 680 on August 13, 2025. The official U.S. model page lists a $225,900 starting price for the 2027 model as of October 8, 2026. The available official pages do not explain the $1,000 difference.
Those are stated starting prices, not an out-the-door quote. Options, taxes, fees, dealer pricing, and availability can affect what a buyer pays; ask a Mercedes-Benz dealer for a current, itemized quote.

European figures are different
Mercedes-Benz UK’s 2024 launch release gives provisional European figures of 430 kW/585 hp, 800 Nm, 0–100 km/h in 4.1 seconds, and a maximum speed of 260 km/h. Those figures use different units and ratings from the U.S. specification and should not be mixed into it.

What makes it different from a regular Mercedes SL?
The SL 680 is not simply a regular SL with a different badge. Mercedes-Benz’s launch material emphasizes Maybach-specific exterior and cabin details, extensive sound insulation, and a comfort-focused calibration. The soft top is acoustic, and the car uses softer spring and damper tuning alongside active hydraulic roll stabilization. Standard rear-axle steering and the Comfort, Maybach, Sport, and Individual drive programs add ways to tailor the car’s response.
That list describes the engineering and intended character Mercedes claims; it is not independent confirmation of ride quality, quietness, or handling. The trade-off suggested by the specification is clear: this is a powerful, all-wheel-drive roadster, but its two-seat layout and modest stated trunk volume make it a different kind of luxury car from a large, rear-seat-focused grand tourer.

Is the Maybach SL 680 a Rolls-Royce rival?
It can be considered a rival in the broad sense that both brands sell highly luxurious cars with substantial scope for personalization. But “Rolls-Royce-crushing” is a headline claim, not a conclusion established by the available official information. Mercedes-Benz’s materials do not provide a comparable Rolls-Royce price-and-specification table or a back-to-back test showing that the SL 680 is categorically superior.
A useful comparison would first need to identify a current Rolls-Royce model with a relevant body style, then compare price and customization, seating, power and acceleration, ride and cabin noise, roof-down usability, luggage capacity, and ownership and service experience. Without that like-for-like evidence, the defensible claim is narrower: the SL 680 brings Maybach design and comfort priorities to a high-performance two-seat roadster.
What Mercedes-Benz says about its character
Daniel Lescow, Head of Mercedes-Maybach at Mercedes-Benz Group AG, described the Monogram Series as “the sportiest and most extravagant model we’ve ever created” and called it a Maybach for open-air motoring. That is the manufacturer’s positioning, not independent validation of the car’s performance or its standing against competitors.
