What does the 620-mile figure mean?
On February 24, 2025, Mercedes-Benz said its solid-state battery development vehicle was expected to exceed 1,000 km (620 miles) of range. That was a company projection for a development vehicle, not a measured result, regulatory-cycle rating, or customer-car specification. Mercedes-Benz’s February announcement also said the prototype battery could provide up to 25% more range than a corresponding standard EQS battery of the same weight and size; this was the manufacturer’s stated comparison, not an independently controlled test.
What happened in the later 749-mile drive?
Mercedes-Benz announced on September 9, 2025, that a lightly modified EQS test vehicle had covered 1,205 km (749 miles) without charging, arriving in Malmö with 137 km (85 miles) of indicated range remaining. The company said the demonstration took place at the end of August, following highways A7 and E20 from Stuttgart through Germany and Denmark to Malmö, Sweden, without taking a ferry. It was a prototype demonstration, not a certified production-EQS range test. Mercedes-Benz’s account of the Stuttgart–Malmö drive does not provide a complete test log or standardized certification protocol for comparing the result directly with consumer-vehicle range ratings.
Mercedes-Benz said its Electric Intelligence route calculation considered topography, traffic, ambient temperature, and energy needed for heating and cooling. The company described the drive as part of a wider validation program that also included digital simulation, facility testing, and public-road testing across climate zones and route profiles. Those details describe the manufacturer’s account; they do not provide independent verification of the distance.
How should the two range figures be compared?

The figures describe different things: the first was a projection, while the second was a manufacturer-reported road demonstration. The remaining-range display at the finish is not the same as distance actually driven, and the company’s announcements do not provide enough test data to treat the two numbers as directly comparable.
What battery was in the test vehicle?
The cells came from US-based Factorial Energy and use its FEST (Factorial Electrolyte System Technology) platform. Mercedes-Benz said its battery-system engineers and Mercedes-AMG High Performance Powertrains (HPP) worked on the vehicle’s battery system. The company described pneumatic actuators designed to accommodate cell-volume changes during charging and discharging, alongside passive airflow cooling. Mercedes-Benz’s technical announcement states that the prototype battery had 25% more usable energy content than the standard EQS battery while remaining comparable in weight and size.

No customer production model with this battery is confirmed in the cited announcements. On September 9, 2025, Mercedes-Benz CTO Markus Schäfer said the company’s goal was to bring innovations like this into series production “by the end of the decade.” That is an ambition, not a launch date or confirmation that a retail vehicle will be offered then. The company’s announcement identifies the vehicle as a test vehicle and the drive as part of validation work.

What can an EV buyer conclude?
- Mercedes-Benz has reported promising prototype results, including a 749-mile road demonstration, but those figures are not production-car range ratings.
- The February 2025 620-mile number was an expectation for a development vehicle; the later 749-mile number was a manufacturer-reported test drive.
- The cited announcements do not provide independent verification, a standardized prototype test-cycle certification, or a complete speed, weather, and energy dataset.
