In the U.S. lineup, the rear-wheel-drive eDrive35 was BMW’s least-expensive 2024 electric model; the range also included eDrive40, all-wheel-drive xDrive40 and performance-focused M50. Edmunds praised the i4’s comfort, interior quality and real-world range while flagging its price and sensitive regenerative braking.
What the 2024 BMW i4 gets right—and where it falls short
Edmunds gives the 2024 i4 an expert score of 7.8/10, describing a premium-feeling car with a comfortable ride, useful space, in-car technology and good real-world range. Its listed strengths include acceleration, ride comfort and interior quality. Its reservations include a relatively high base price, middling standard equipment, sensitive regenerative braking and less engaging driving than some rivals and gasoline-powered BMWs. These are Edmunds’ assessments, not findings from an independent test conducted for this article. Edmunds’ 2024 BMW i4 review and trim information
That balance makes the i4 most compelling for a buyer who wants an upscale, quiet electric sedan-like car and values comfort and cabin technology. It is a less clear value choice if the priority is the lowest purchase price or a sportier driving character.

| Trim | Starting MSRP including destination | Drive layout | Position in lineup |
|---|---|---|---|
| eDrive35 | About $52,200 (Edmunds) | Rear-wheel drive | Least-expensive 2024 U.S. i4 trim |
| eDrive40 | About $57,300 (Edmunds) | Rear-wheel drive | More range-oriented step up |
| xDrive40 | About $61,600 (Edmunds) | All-wheel drive | Added to the 2024 lineup |
| M50 | About $69,700 (Edmunds) | All-wheel drive | Performance-focused top trim |
BMW’s “lowest-priced electric” description is relative to its own U.S. lineup and this model year; it does not mean the i4 was the cheapest electric car on the market. A used 2024 i4’s price now depends on mileage, condition, equipment, location and market supply, none of which can be inferred from its original MSRP.

| Trim | Reported EPA range | Powertrain detail reported |
|---|---|---|
| eDrive35 | Not stated in the cited Car and Driver 2024 review | Rear-wheel drive; 68.7-kWh net battery and up to 180-kW DC charging reported |
| eDrive40 | 301 miles | Rear-wheel drive |
| xDrive40 | 307 miles with standard 18-inch wheels; 282 miles with optional 19-inch wheels | All-wheel drive; 396 hp |
| M50 | Up to 245 miles | Performance-focused all-wheel drive |
Car and Driver recorded 280 miles in its eDrive40 test, two miles below that car’s EPA estimate. That is one publication’s test result, not a forecast for every driver. The same outlet reports a 200-kW charging capacity for models above eDrive35. It also reports that its long-term xDrive40 charged from 10% to 90% in 38 minutes on a DC fast charger, averaging 208 kW; that observation describes its long-term vehicle and charging session, not a guaranteed charging time for every i4.
Which trim fits which buyer?
- eDrive35: The entry price is the draw. The cited review coverage indicates a shorter-range, lower-peak-charging trade-off versus higher trims. Confirm the exact car’s equipment and official range rating before buying.
- eDrive40: A rear-wheel-drive option with a 301-mile EPA estimate in Car and Driver’s coverage. It is a reasonable middle ground for buyers who do not need all-wheel drive.
- xDrive40: Adds all-wheel drive to the 2024 range. Its reported EPA estimate changes substantially with wheel choice, so check whether a car has standard 18-inch or optional 19-inch wheels.
- M50: The highest-priced trim in Edmunds’ listed lineup and oriented toward performance; Car and Driver reports a maximum EPA range of 245 miles.
Charging: what to check before choosing
Charging capability is not the same as the speed a driver will routinely see. The vehicle’s trim, battery state, charger output, temperature and charging conditions affect a session. Car and Driver reports up to 180 kW for eDrive35 and 200-kW capacity for models above it, but its 38-minute 10–90% xDrive40 observation should not be treated as a universal charging promise. U.S. and U.K. figures are not interchangeable
BMW Group UK’s April 24, 2024 announcement covers a refreshed U.K.-market i4 with customer deliveries scheduled from July 2024. It describes revised exterior lighting and details, an updated steering wheel and trim, and a Curved Display using iDrive QuickSelect based on Operating System 8.5. The release lists a U.K. RRP from £50,365 and provisional WLTP ranges. The cited material does not establish a reliability rate or a reliability verdict. Edmunds shows an average owner rating of 4/5 based on 39 reviews on its page, accessed in 2026. That is a small, site-specific set of owner reviews, not a measured reliability statistic. For a particular used car, assess its service history, condition, warranty status and vehicle-specific records rather than treating an owner-rating average as proof of reliability.

Verdict
The 2024 BMW i4 is a strong premium electric choice for drivers who prioritize a comfortable ride, a polished interior and a range of powertrain choices. The eDrive35 made it BMW’s least-expensive U.S. EV for the 2024 model year, but its price was still substantial and the standard-equipment trade-off matters. Choose by the specific priorities that separate the trims—budget, range, wheel size, all-wheel-drive traction and performance—and evaluate any used example on its own equipment and condition. The evidence here does not establish a category-wide win over competing EVs.
