Mercedes-Benz Special Trucks and Hellgeth Engineering have turned the Unimog U 4023 into a luxury show car, pairing its serious off-road hardware with a 300-hp six-cylinder engine and a more upscale, digitally equipped cabin. It is a concept vehicle—not an announced production model: Mercedes-Benz says it will gather findings for a possible future development stage, but has not announced a price, orders, or production plans.
What is the luxury Unimog?
Unveiled on 16 December 2025, the vehicle is a Mercedes-Benz Special Trucks and Hellgeth Engineering show car based on the Unimog U 4023. The build is presented as a study in combining the model’s off-road capability with more power and comfort, rather than as a documented makeover of a customer-owned truck. Mercedes-Benz’s announcement is the primary source for its features and status; Motor1 separately corroborates the U 4023 basis and engine output.
How the engine and off-road hardware compare
The show car replaces the standard four-cylinder engine with a Mercedes-Benz OM 936 six-cylinder rated by the manufacturer at 220 kW (300 hp). Mercedes-Benz also says it revised the transmission tuning and increased driving comfort; it does not provide independent test results or quantified performance comparisons.
| Area | Luxury Unimog show car | U 4023 baseline in the announcement |
|---|---|---|
| Engine | OM 936 six-cylinder, manufacturer-rated at 220 kW (300 hp) (Mercedes-Benz Special Trucks, 2025). | Standard four-cylinder engine; the announcement does not state its output. |
| Transmission | Revised tuning, according to Mercedes-Benz; specific changes are not stated. | Not stated in the announcement. |
| Off-road equipment | Portal axles, flexible frame, selectable all-wheel drive, and longitudinal and differential locks on both axles. | The announcement identifies these as Unimog off-road equipment but does not itemize differences from the baseline. |
| Purpose and status | Luxury show car; Mercedes-Benz plans to gather findings for a possible new development stage. | Production model; no further configuration or availability comparison is stated here. |
The announced hardware points to a truck conceived to retain the Unimog’s off-road focus while adding a larger engine. The release does not establish road speed, fuel economy, towing figures, or independently measured capability, so those outcomes cannot be inferred from the power rating or equipment list.

Is the luxury Unimog going into production?
Mercedes-Benz says it plans to gather findings from the show car for a possible new development stage. That is a statement of intent to evaluate the concept, not a production commitment. The announcement gives no price, ordering information, or confirmed production timeline.
Franziska Cusumano, CEO of Mercedes-Benz Special Trucks, described the company’s aim as combining Unimog robustness and off-road capability with a new level of comfort, calling the vehicle “a statement of innovation and passion.” That quote expresses the company’s vision for the concept; it is not independent evidence of tested capability or comfort.

How it differs from Unimog expedition motorhomes
This show car should not be confused with separate expedition motorhome conversions based on Unimog trucks. Mercedes-Benz has separately described a bimobil conversion with 300 litres of fresh-water capacity and a 24-volt vehicle electrical system supplying a 12-volt living cabin (Mercedes-Benz Trucks UK). Another Mercedes-Benz story covers Ziegler Adventure’s “Mog Home,” based on a U 4023 with a 3,850 mm wheelbase and optional solar equipment and comfort package (Mercedes-Benz Trucks UK). Those are distinct conversions; the cited examples do not establish that either builder worked on the Hellgeth show car.
