Mercedes-Benz documented its design and output in detail, but its published sources do not establish a typical lifespan or a quantified real-world reliability rate. That means there is no evidence-based mileage figure for how long an M120 “should” last; an individual car’s condition and documented history matter more than a general claim.
What the M120 was designed to do
Mercedes-Benz describes the M120 as its first series-produced twelve-cylinder passenger-car engine and an entirely new 6.0-litre design for the 140-series. The engine first appeared in the 600 SE and 600 SEL. Its technical ambition was not just cylinder count: the design combined high output with extensive electronic engine management and emissions measures.
Mercedes-Benz’s 140-series history and parts page gives the M120’s maximum output as 300 kW (408 hp) and peak torque as 580 Nm, with 500 Nm available at 1,600 rpm. A 1991 SAE paper by Mercedes-Benz passenger-car engine-development authors reports the same output and torque for the new 6-litre engine. The paper also specifies a maximum permissible continuous engine speed of 6,000 rpm; that is a design limit, not a recommended target for routine driving.
How the M120’s engineering works
Four-valve heads and variable timing
The M120 has four valves per cylinder and two camshafts per cylinder head. Its intake camshaft timing is variable, allowing the engine’s breathing to be adjusted across operating conditions. The contemporary SAE technical paper describes the two variable valve-timing systems and notes that the four-valve heads shared their basic design with the six-cylinder engine.

Fuel, throttle and ignition control
The documented system uses LH electronic fuel injection and a hot-wire air-mass sensor. Two motor-driven throttle valves control airflow. Mercedes-Benz’s historical account says its fully electronic ignition selected an optimum ignition point using 300 ignition maps, with cylinder-specific adjustment up to the knock limit. It characterized the M120 at the time as the only twelve-cylinder engine worldwide with cylinder-selective anti-knock control; that is Mercedes-Benz’s historical claim, not an independent comparison of every engine on the market.
Connected engine functions
The engine’s functions were linked through CAN, the in-vehicle communication network described in the 1991 SAE paper. This reflects the M120’s integrated electronic approach: fuel delivery, throttle operation, ignition and knock control were not isolated systems.

Emissions design and cold-start operation
Mercedes-Benz describes an exhaust system designed to bring the catalytic converters rapidly to operating temperature after a cold start. The package included seven litres of catalytic-converter volume, a double-walled, triple-insulated exhaust manifold, double-walled pipes and catalysts embedded in insulating expandable matting. These are descriptions of design intent and construction; they are not measurements of present-day emissions performance or proof that an older vehicle will meet current local requirements.
How long does a Mercedes M120 last?
The available manufacturer and technical sources do not state an M120 service-life target, a fleet mileage distribution, a controlled durability-study result or an engine-specific failure rate. They therefore cannot support a typical lifespan such as a particular number of miles or kilometres. The M120’s sophisticated design and original output figures describe what Mercedes engineered, not how long every surviving engine will run.

For a decades-old car, evaluate the specific engine and vehicle rather than infer condition from the model’s reputation or odometer alone. A well-documented maintenance history and a current inspection provide more useful evidence about an individual example than an unsupported universal mileage claim.

- Identify the exact application. Confirm the engine code, model year, chassis and market for the car in question. Do not assume that documentation or parts listings cover every M120 variant.
- Review records and repairs. Look for dated service documentation and ask what work was performed, rather than treating mileage by itself as a verdict.
- Obtain a current diagnostic assessment. Have the engine and its management systems checked by a workshop with relevant Mercedes-Benz V-12 experience. A historical description of the control system cannot tell you the condition of a particular car’s electronics today.
- Check parts for the VIN before committing. Mercedes-Benz Classic Parts offers a genuine-parts search for the 140 model series, but a catalog entry does not establish current stock or fitment to every vehicle.
- Match repair information to the car. Mercedes-Benz Canada says owners may contact its Technical Literature department about service manuals for out-of-production vehicles. Its Workshop Information System includes repair instructions, safety information, troubleshooting, wiring diagrams and tool information. Confirm market, chassis, year and engine coverage before relying on a document.
Mercedes-Benz Media reported in February 2026 that its historic-parts program covered around 160,000 items overall. That figure is not an M120 parts count, and the announcement’s highlighted reproduced oil pump applies to M108, M114, M129 and M130 engines—not the M120. For a specific repair, check availability and application directly rather than inferring M120 supply from the size of the wider program. Mercedes-Benz Media’s February 2026 announcement
