The Mercedes-Benz GLE name dates to autumn 2015, but the SUV’s lineage starts with the M-Class, introduced in 1997. Its main earlier series are W163, W164 and W166; the GLE badge appeared partway through W166 production. Mercedes-Benz’s published production dates are useful for identifying those series, but they are not universal model-year ranges: model-year labels vary by market.

Mercedes-Benz gives the W163, W164 and W166 production periods on its GLE heritage page and Austrian GLE heritage page. For individual U.S. vehicles, the Mercedes-Benz USA manuals and resources are a better guide to market-specific model-year documentation than production dates alone.
How the M-Class became the GLE
Mercedes-Benz launched the M-Class in 1997. The original family was commonly identified with ML model designations. In autumn 2015, the manufacturer changed the family name to GLE to signal its place among SUVs associated with the E-Class model family. That change happened during the W166’s production run, rather than at the start of a wholly new series.
As a result, “W166” identifies a vehicle series, while “M-Class” or “GLE” identifies the badge used at a particular point in that series’ life. A 2015 vehicle’s name depends on its market and production timing; the year by itself does not prove which badge it wore.

What changed in each generation?
W163: the original M-Class (1997–2004)
The W163 established the M-Class. Mercedes-Benz describes it as the brand’s first model built in the United States and notes its electronic 4ETS traction system. The series is the starting point for the lineage now marketed as GLE, even though no W163 was originally sold under the GLE name.
W164: second-generation M-Class (2005–2011)
The W164 replaced the W163’s separate frame with a unitary body. Mercedes-Benz also notes that optional off-road equipment preserved more serious terrain capability. The change in construction is a useful distinction when comparing the two early M-Class series; it does not, by itself, establish how any particular used vehicle was equipped.

W166: third-generation M-Class, then GLE (2011–2018)
The W166 began production as the third-generation M-Class. Its 2015 facelift introduced the GLE badge, and the GLE Coupe joined the lineup. Consequently, “W166 GLE” usually refers to the facelifted, renamed portion of the series, while earlier examples are M-Class/ML-badged.
Fourth-generation GLE and the announced 2027 update
Mercedes-Benz USA announced the fourth-generation GLE launch in September 2018 and lists a 2020 GLE SUV quick-reference guide. Those U.S. records help anchor the current-name era, but they should not be converted into a global year-by-year range. In a March 31, 2026 announcement, Mercedes-Benz USA described a 2027 GLE family—including SUV and Coupe versions, AMG GLE 63 S SUV, and GLE 53e hybrid variants—and said the vehicles were expected at U.S. dealerships in 2026. That is an announced model update, not evidence of another generation.

What model years are included?
There is no single global model-year table that can be inferred from the production-series dates. Production dates describe when Mercedes-Benz built a series; model years are assigned by market and can begin before or end after a calendar-year boundary. The fourth-generation references in the available Mercedes-Benz USA material are U.S.-specific: a 2018 launch announcement and a 2020 model-year quick-reference guide.
For buying, servicing or identifying a specific SUV, use its market, model year and vehicle documentation together. Mercedes-Benz USA provides year-specific owner manuals and service and warranty booklets; select the appropriate vehicle and year rather than assuming that a series code alone establishes parts or service compatibility.

Is a 2015 Mercedes ML the same as a GLE?
It may belong to the same W166 generation as the first GLE-badged vehicles, but “2015 ML” and “2015 GLE” should not be treated as interchangeable labels without checking the vehicle. Mercedes-Benz adopted GLE during the W166 facelift in 2015; timing and market determine which name applies. Check the vehicle’s original badging and its market-specific paperwork to identify it accurately.
