There are five Mercedes-Benz C-Class sedan generations: W202 (1993–2000), W203 (2000–2007), W204 (2007–2014), W205 (2014–2021), and W206 (2021–present). For U.S. shoppers, those correspond approximately to the 1994–2000, 2001–2007, 2008–2014, 2015–2021, and 2022–2026 model years. The W201 Mercedes-Benz 190 came before them and should be treated as the predecessor, not as a C-Class generation.
The five Mercedes-Benz C-Class sedan generations
Mercedes-Benz has produced five C-Class sedan generations: the W202, W203, W204, W205, and W206. The W202 arrived in 1993 as the first car officially sold under the C-Class name. The W206, introduced in 2021, remains the current generation as of August 12, 2026.

The model-year ranges most useful to U.S. shoppers are 1994–2000 for the W202, 2001–2007 for the W203, 2008–2014 for the W204, 2015–2021 for the W205, and 2022–2026 for the W206. Those are U.S. model years, not universal production dates. Mercedes-Benz introduced each generation globally before the corresponding U.S. model year in most cases.

Mercedes-Benz 190: the C-Class predecessor
Body code: W201 | Global production: 1982–1993 | Typical North American model years: 1984–1993
#1 Best Overall
The W201 Mercedes-Benz 190 is important to the C-Class story, but it is not a C-Class generation. Mercedes-Benz introduced the compact 190 at the 1982 Paris Motor Show as a smaller three-box sedan positioned below the larger models in the range.
The 190 established much of the engineering formula that the C-Class inherited: compact rear-wheel-drive proportions, high-strength steel construction, and a five-link multilink rear suspension. Nearly 1.9 million W201 examples were sold worldwide during its 11-year production run. Production ended in August 1993, overlapping the arrival of the W202.
For a quick timeline, treat the W201 as the Baby Benz predecessor and the W202 as the first true C-Class.

Global sedan production: 1993–2000 | Typical U.S. model years: 1994–2000
Mercedes-Benz introduced model series 202 in May 1993. It was the first compact Mercedes-Benz to carry the C-Class name, replacing the 190 as the company’s compact luxury sedan. Compared with the W201, the W202 delivered more interior room and comfort while retaining a compact, rear-wheel-drive sedan layout.
The W202 was sold in several equipment lines, including Classic, Esprit, Elegance, and Sport. Its engine range was considerably broader than the 190’s and included gasoline and diesel four- and six-cylinder options, depending on market.
Notable W202 engines and AMG models
- The supercharged C 230 Kompressor arrived in 1995.
- The C 220 CDI appeared in 1997 and was Mercedes-Benz’s first passenger-car diesel using common-rail direct injection.
- AMG versions included the straight-six C 36 AMG, the V8-powered C 43 AMG, and the later C 55 AMG.
- The C 43 AMG was the first C-Class offered with an eight-cylinder engine.
The 1997 W202 facelift
The 1997 facelift is the most important visual dividing line when identifying a W202. Mercedes-Benz revised the bumpers, side skirts, rear lamps, grille, and interior trim. Equipment and safety technology also expanded.

Exact availability depended on market, trim, and options, so a facelift alone does not prove that a particular car has every listed feature.
The W202 sedan ended global production in 2000. The related S202 estate continued into 2001; that later date should not be used for the W202 sedan.
W203: the second-generation C-Class sedan
Global sedan production: 2000–2007 | Typical U.S. model years: 2001–2007
Mercedes-Benz presented the W203 in March 2000. Its most recognizable feature is the front end with four separate lamp elements arranged in a twin-headlamp appearance. The design marked a visible shift away from the rounded W202 while the car itself brought a substantial increase in electronic equipment and safety technology.
Mercedes-Benz highlighted more than 20 innovations for the generation. Depending on market and equipment level, these included window airbags, adaptive front airbags, automatic lighting, a multifunction steering wheel, a central display, and fiber-optic audio connections. The W203 also used a three-link front axle, high-strength-steel front crash structures, and a quoted drag coefficient of 0.26. Electronic stability and braking systems were important parts of its safety package, although exact standard and optional equipment varied by market and year.

W203 body-style warning
The sedan is the W203. Mercedes-Benz also sold a related two-door Sport Coupé under the internal code CL203. After a comprehensive update, that model continued as the CLC-Class. It is a related C-Class derivative, not a W203 sedan and not a separate sedan generation.
The 2004 W203 facelift and AMG range
The major W203 update arrived around 2004. It revised the dashboard and instrument cluster and brought updated engines and equipment. The facelift is often the easiest way to distinguish a later W203 from an early car, but it remains a facelift rather than a new generation.
Performance versions included the supercharged C 32 AMG and the later C 55 AMG. The C 55’s V8 was the first eight-cylinder engine offered in the W203 model series. The W203 sedan ended its global run in 2007, when the W204 took over.
W204: the third-generation C-Class sedan
Global sedan production: 2007–2014 | Typical U.S. model years: 2008–2014
The W204 debuted in January 2007. It was larger than the W203, improving passenger space and comfort, and it adopted sharper, more heavily creased exterior styling. Mercedes-Benz gave the trim lines distinct visual identities: Avantgarde versions placed the three-pointed star in the grille, while Classic and Elegance versions retained the traditional hood-mounted star and grille presentation.
The generation emphasized efficiency as well as size. Modernized engines, a stiffer body shell, lightweight construction, and improved aerodynamics helped reduce the performance penalty of a larger sedan. Rear-wheel drive remained standard, while 4MATIC all-wheel drive was offered in applicable markets and configurations.
The W204 C 63 AMG
The signature W204 performance model was the C 63 AMG, introduced with a naturally aspirated 6.2-liter V8. Mercedes-Benz listed an initial output of 336 kW, or 457 hp, with a later increase to 360 kW, or 490 hp, for applicable versions.
The 2011 C 63 AMG Coupé Black Series was a separate two-door performance derivative with track-focused changes and 380 kW, or 517 hp. The sedan and estate also received the C 63 AMG Edition 507. These models are useful historical markers, but coupe and estate specifications should not automatically be applied to a W204 sedan.
The 2011 W204 facelift
The W204 sedan received a substantial facelift for the 2011 model year in many markets. The update included revised exterior styling, a modernized cabin, new infotainment and instrument technology, and updated engines.
For U.S. research, “2011 facelift” is a useful shorthand, but the transition was tied to market and model-year timing. A global production date and a U.S. registration year may describe the same car differently. Check the vehicle’s build sheet or data card when the distinction matters.

The W205 was built on Mercedes-Benz’s Modular Rear Architecture. Its structure combined high-strength steel with aluminum body components; Mercedes-Benz reported that the sedan body structure was approximately 50 kilograms lighter than an equivalent all-steel construction. The result was a C-Class that felt more closely related in design and technology to the larger E-Class and S-Class than earlier generations had.
Mercedes-Benz described the W205 as a “mini S-Class” after the CLA-Class assumed the entry-level position in the brand’s passenger-car range. Depending on market and trim, equipment included nine standard airbags in the cited market, PRE-SAFE, available DISTRONIC PLUS, and Active Parking Assist.
Electrification arrives in the W205
The W205 was the first C-Class generation to offer a plug-in hybrid application. Other versions adopted mild-hybrid assistance as Mercedes-Benz began moving electrification from a niche option toward a broader range strategy.
The 2018 facelift brought available MULTIBEAM LED lighting, ULTRA RANGE high beam, Intelligent Light System functions, a fully digital instrument display, and newer four-cylinder engines. The M264 gasoline engine and OM654 diesel family were among the updated powertrain technology introduced for the facelift-era range. Availability varied significantly by country.
W205 AMG models
The AMG lineup included the C 63 and C 63 S. Unlike the naturally aspirated 6.2-liter V8 in the W204 C 63, the W205 C 63 S used a 4.0-liter biturbo V8 derived from the AMG GT engine family. Mercedes-Benz listed up to 375 kW, or 510 hp, for the cited C 63 S specification.
This is one of the clearest generation-to-generation changes in C-Class history: W204 represents a large naturally aspirated V8, while W205 represents a smaller-displacement, turbocharged V8 with a different performance and efficiency strategy.

Mercedes-Benz introduced the W206 in 2021. It remains the current C-Class sedan generation as of the stated research date. The platform remains rear-wheel-drive-based, with 4MATIC all-wheel drive available in applicable versions, but the powertrain strategy is substantially more electrified than that of previous generations.
The W206 range centers on turbocharged four-cylinder engines paired with electrical assistance. In the United States, 48-volt mild-hybrid systems are a defining feature of the lineup. Other markets may offer different gasoline, diesel, plug-in-hybrid, or drivetrain combinations, so a badge from one country cannot safely be used to infer the specifications of a car sold elsewhere.
2026 U.S. C 300 4MATIC sedan specifications
For a precise current reference, the 2026 U.S.-market C 300 4MATIC Sedan uses a 2.0-liter turbocharged inline-four with mild-hybrid drive, a nine-speed 9G-TRONIC automatic transmission, and 255 hp. Mercedes-Benz USA lists 295 lb-ft of torque, a 112.8-inch wheelbase, 187.0-inch overall length, 11.6 cubic feet of cargo capacity, and a manufacturer-estimated 0–60 mph time of 6.0 seconds.
Those figures apply specifically to the 2026 U.S. C 300 4MATIC sedan. They should not be generalized to every W206 trim, model year, or country. For example, non-U.S. C 200, C 300e, diesel, AMG, and other versions can use different engines, outputs, transmissions, dimensions, and equipment.

On this generation, a model badge is not a direct statement of engine displacement. “C 300,” “C 43,” and “C 63” identify trim and performance positioning; they do not by themselves tell you the exact displacement or whether the car uses mild-hybrid or plug-in-hybrid technology.

How to identify a C-Class sedan by chassis code
| Code | Visual and historical clues | Important check |
|---|---|---|
| W202 | Rounded 1990s compact sedan; first official C-Class | Separate pre- and post-1997 facelift cars |
| W203 | Distinctive twin-headlamp front end; 2000–2007 sedan | Separate early cars from the approximately 2004 facelift |
| W204 | Sharper, more upright design; 2007–2014 global sedan | Check whether it is an early car or the major 2011 facelift |
| W205 | Smoother, larger “mini S-Class” design; 2014–2021 global sedan | 2018 facelift cars gained substantially revised lighting, displays, and engines |
| W206 | Latest design with a large portrait display and electrified four-cylinder options | Verify the exact model year, market, engine, and drivetrain |
Exterior clues are useful for a quick identification, but they are not conclusive. A modified grille, replacement headlamps, an AMG-style body kit, or a facelift conversion can make one generation resemble another.
A reliable identification process
- Start with the registration and model year. Use it as a first filter, not as the final answer.
- Look for the chassis or series code. W202, W203, W204, W205, and W206 identify the sedan generations more reliably than a trim badge.
- Verify the VIN, build sheet, or Mercedes-Benz data card. This is especially important for cars near a facelift or model-year transition.
- Confirm the body style. Estate, coupe, cabriolet, Sport Coupé, and CLC derivatives can use different internal prefixes even when they share the C-Class name.
- Confirm the market and engine. A C 200, C 220d, C 300, C 43, or C 63 badge can appear across multiple generations and countries.
Common mistakes when comparing C-Class generations
- Counting the W201 as a C-Class: the 190 is the direct predecessor, not the first C-Class. The W202 holds that distinction.
- Using estate or coupe dates for the sedan: related body styles often began or ended at different times and use different body prefixes.
- Calling a facelift a new generation: the major updates around 1997, 2004, 2011, and 2018 do not create new chassis generations.
- Confusing production year with model year: global production dates and U.S. model-year labels do not always line up.
- Assuming the same badge means the same engine: C 300, C 43, and C 63 specifications changed across generations and markets.
- Transferring equipment from one market to another: drivetrain availability, safety equipment, dimensions, output, and options can differ by country.
- Making reliability claims from the chassis code alone: a used-car assessment also requires maintenance records, recall information, known failure patterns, and regional parts and service availability.
Frequently used C-Class generation shorthand
When a listing says “W204 C 300,” it is identifying the chassis family and trim, not one universal specification. When a parts listing says “fits C-Class,” that description is incomplete until the chassis code, engine, body style, production date, and market are confirmed.

For most research, the shortest accurate answer is: W202, W203, W204, W205, and W206 are the five C-Class sedan generations; W201 is the 190 predecessor.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is the Mercedes-Benz 190 a C-Class generation?
No. The W201 Mercedes-Benz 190 is the direct predecessor to the C-Class, not a C-Class generation. The first vehicle officially called the C-Class was the W202, introduced in 1993.
How many Mercedes-Benz C-Class sedan generations are there?
There are five C-Class sedan generations: W202, W203, W204, W205, and W206. The W206 is the current generation as of August 12, 2026.
What are the U.S. Mercedes-Benz C-Class model years by generation?
For the United States, the practical sedan ranges are W202 for 1994–2000, W203 for 2001–2007, W204 for 2008–2014, W205 for 2015–2021, and W206 for 2022–2026. Other markets may use different model-year groupings.
Does a Mercedes C-Class facelift count as a new generation?
No. A facelift is a substantial update to an existing generation. The commonly referenced W202, W203, W204, and W205 updates occurred around 1997, 2004, 2011, and 2018, respectively, but none created a new chassis generation.
What is the best way to identify a specific C-Class generation?
Use the vehicle’s VIN, build sheet, or Mercedes-Benz data card. Trim badges such as C 200, C 300, C 43, and C 63 can appear in multiple chassis families and markets, so they do not identify the generation by themselves.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: The C-Class sedan began with the W202 in 1993 and has progressed through the W203, W204, W205, and current W206. For U.S. model-year research, use 1994–2000, 2001–2007, 2008–2014, 2015–2021, and 2022–2026 respectively. Verify any specific car with its VIN or data card, because production dates, facelifts, body styles, engines, and market specifications can overlap.
