Mercedes-Benz reportedly explored an 8.0-litre W18 for a hypothetical W140 800 SEL in the early 1990s, but the engine never advanced beyond the drawing stage. The production W140 flagship was the 600 SE/600 SEL, powered by a 6.0-litre V12.
What was the proposed Mercedes 800 SEL?
The 800 SEL was a hypothetical, higher-powered version of the W140 S-Class, not a production model. Auto Bild reports that Mercedes-Benz considered an 8.0-litre engine internally designated M 216 for the limousine. Its account describes an unusual three-bank layout: three banks of six cylinders arranged in a W, with a reported angle of 75.5 degrees between the banks. The compact arrangement was intended to keep the engine close in length to a conventional inline-six so it could fit in the W140. These are reported design details of an unbuilt proposal, not specifications for a completed or tested engine. Auto Bild’s account describes the concept.
What power was the W18 supposed to make?
Auto Bild reports two proposed versions, aimed at different applications. The figures are targets, not verified output from a running engine.
| Proposed application | Reported configuration | Reported target |
|---|---|---|
| Hypothetical 800 SEL limousine | Two valves per cylinder | About 490 PS and 750 Nm |
| Possible sports car | Five valves per cylinder | At least 680 PS and 800 Nm |
Both sets of figures come from Auto Bild’s report; they should not be read as production ratings or test results.

Why was the Mercedes W18 never built?
Auto Bild says Mercedes-Benz regarded the 6.0-litre V12 as sufficiently smooth and powerful, making the more complex W18 redundant. That is the publication’s explanation, not a confirmed statement from Mercedes-Benz: the available manufacturer history does not explain why the proposal ended.
Auto Bild says the M 216 remained at the drawing stage. No W18-powered 800 SEL reached production, and the reported sports-car application also remained a proposal.
What engine did the W140 flagship actually use?
Mercedes-Benz dates the W 140 series to 1991–1998. Its production flagship, the 600 SE/600 SEL, used the 6.0-litre M 120 V12. Mercedes-Benz identifies it as the company’s first production passenger car with a twelve-cylinder engine. See the Mercedes-Benz W 140 history and Mercedes-Benz USA model history.
| Proposed M 216 W18 | Production W140 V12 | |
|---|---|---|
| Status | Drawing-stage concept, according to Auto Bild | Production engine in the 600 SE/600 SEL |
| Application | Hypothetical 800 SEL and possible sports car | W140 600 SE/600 SEL |
| Configuration | Reported three-bank, 18-cylinder W layout | 6.0-litre V12 |
| Evidence | Secondary-source reporting by Auto Bild | Mercedes-Benz model histories |
The comparison is about status and configuration, not a head-to-head performance test: the W18 figures were proposed targets, while the V12 powered a production car.

How does the W18 fit the W140’s engine story?
The W18 was not the only ambitious engine idea associated with the new S-Class era, but it must be kept separate from documented production development. A 1991 SAE technical-paper record by Mercedes-Benz engine-development authors covers the 4.2- and 5.0-litre V8s developed for the new S-Class. That record provides period context for engines that did reach the W140 range; it does not independently confirm the M 216 proposal. SAE paper record.
