The Mercedes-AMG CLS 63 spans two CLS generations: the first-generation C219, followed by the second-generation C218 four-door coupe and its X218 Shooting Brake sibling. The C219 is commonly listed for 2006–2010, though a Mercedes-Benz regional page gives 2006–2011; second-generation dates also vary by market and body style, with a U.S. archive listing a 2018 CLS 63 S Coupe specification.
Mercedes-AMG CLS 63 generations at a glance
| Generation and body | Years cited | Engine and key distinctions |
|---|---|---|
| C219, four-door coupe | 2006–2010 in the Mercedes-Benz Clubs technical guide; 2006–2011 on Mercedes-Benz Ukraine’s page | Naturally aspirated 6.2-liter M156 V8. Mercedes-Benz France lists 378 kW (514 ch) and 630 Nm. |
| C218, four-door coupe | Standard variants listed from 2010/2011 through 2013; S variants from 2013 through 2017 in the technical guide. A U.S. archive includes a 2018 CLS 63 S Coupe specification. | 5.5-liter M157 biturbo V8. Output varies by version; later cars include S and selected 4MATIC configurations. |
| X218, Shooting Brake | Second-generation body style; Mercedes-Benz says it reached showrooms from October 6, 2012. | Shares the broad M157 5.5-liter biturbo V8 family, with output and performance depending on version and body style. |
These are evidence-based ranges, not one universal global model-year chart. Production year, local launch timing, retail model year, and market availability do not always line up. The C219 cutoff discrepancy and U.S.-specific 2018 archive entry should not be treated as proof that every market offered the same versions for the same years.
What changed between the C219 and C218?
C219: naturally aspirated 6.2-liter V8
The first CLS 63 AMG uses the M156.983, a naturally aspirated 6.2-liter V8. Mercedes-Benz France’s figures for the predecessor are 378 kW (514 ch) and 630 Nm. The Mercedes-Benz Clubs technical guide lists the C219 CLS 63 production span as 2006–2010, while Mercedes-Benz Ukraine describes the span as 2006–2011. A careful summary is that it was introduced for 2006 and is commonly listed through 2010, with some regional sources giving 2011.
C218 and X218: 5.5-liter biturbo V8
The second generation changes to the M157, a 5.5-liter biturbo V8. Mercedes-Benz France lists a 386 kW (525 ch), 700 Nm configuration and a higher-output 410 kW (557 ch), 800 Nm configuration in its launch-era material. Later S versions raised output further. Selected versions were offered with AMG 4MATIC, but drivetrain and output depend on the specific market, body, and variant.

Keep the units attached to the original source: Mercedes-Benz France uses “ch,” while Mercedes-Benz Italy uses “CV.” These are metric horsepower labels and should not be silently presented as U.S. SAE horsepower. Kilowatts and newton-metres provide a more direct comparison across the cited specifications.
How the second-generation S versions differ
Mercedes-Benz Italy’s January 2013 release specifies the CLS 63 AMG S at 430 kW (585 CV) and 800 Nm. In that release, the 410 kW/720 Nm configuration could be paired optionally with AMG 4MATIC. The figures below are manufacturer specifications for the configurations in that release, not independent road-test results.

Was there a CLS 63 Shooting Brake?
Yes. The X218 is the Shooting Brake body style within the second-generation CLS family, not a separate numbered generation. Mercedes-Benz said it would reach showrooms from October 6, 2012, and its January 2013 release covers CLS 63 AMG versions of both the coupe and Shooting Brake. The cited 2013 S figures show why body style matters: the S Shooting Brake’s listed 0–100 km/h time and electronically limited maximum speed differ from those of the S Coupe.

- Use chassis codes: C219 identifies the first-generation CLS coupe; C218 identifies the second-generation coupe; X218 denotes the second-generation Shooting Brake. These are more precise than assigning one worldwide year range.
- Separate production from model year: the C219 technical guide and the Ukraine regional page differ on the final year. The U.S. archive’s 2018 CLS 63 S Coupe entry is specifically a U.S. specification archive, dated August 3, 2017; it does not establish 2018 availability in every market or body style.
- Do not extend the badge into the next generation: the next CLS generation is C257, introduced in 2018. The cited sources do not identify a C257 CLS 63, so later CLS 53 models should not be counted as CLS 63 years.
For an individual car, confirm its market, model year, chassis/body code, and variant from its original sales or vehicle documentation. The cited sources establish the two-generation lineage and key engine changes, but not a complete worldwide annual matrix for every trim.
