McMurtry Spéirling: What Its Speed Records and Fan Noise Really Prove

The Spéirling has venue-specific speed records and a distinctive fan system, but the evidence does not prove it is the fastest or loudest electric car overall.

The McMurtry Spéirling has set remarkable records at named venues, and its fan system gives it an unusually prominent sound for an electric car. But the evidence does not establish that it is the fastest or loudest electric car ever built in every category. The key distinctions are the course, the car’s configuration, and whether a noise figure was independently measured.

Which Spéirling speed records are documented?

McMurtry’s record page lists two headline results, each tied to a particular venue and car configuration:

Result Vehicle and date What it establishes
39.08 seconds Spéirling prototype, driven by Max Chilton at the 1.16-mile Goodwood Festival of Speed hillclimb in 2022 A Goodwood hillclimb record. McMurtry says the run beat the previously recognized official 41.6-second time and an unofficial 39.9-second mark. Goodwood also recounts the run and its context. McMurtry record page; Goodwood
55.9 seconds Spéirling PURE VP1 at the Top Gear Test Track in April 2025 McMurtry reports an outright lap record at that track, 3.1 seconds faster than the previous record, held by the 2004 Renault R24 Formula 1 car. McMurtry record page

These are impressive, but they are not interchangeable tests: one is a hillclimb run and the other a test-track lap. “Fastest” needs a category—such as a particular circuit record—and a defined vehicle class before it can be treated as a meaningful comparison. McMurtry’s record page also lists results at other circuits; those should be quoted with their own dates, configurations, and conditions rather than combined into a universal ranking.

What is the production-form Spéirling PURE?

In its announcement dated 2 July 2026, McMurtry describes the PURE as a single-seat electric hyper track car. The company lists these specifications for the production-form car:

Hot Wheels - McMurtry SPÉIRLING - HYW55 - Peak Pursuit 7/10 - Futuristic Electric Hypercar - Officially Licensed McMurtry Model in 1:64 Scale - Mattel 2025 (237/250)
  • Officially licensed McMurtry model from Mattel 2025
  • Part of the Hot Wheels Peak Pursuit Series 2025, Number 237/250 (7/10 within the subseries)
  • Detailed replica of the McMurtry Spéirling, an all-electric hypercar
  • Colour: graphite grey metallic with white accents
  • 1:64 scale - aerodynamic shape and realistic proportions
  • 1,000 bhp delivered to the rear wheels
  • A 100 kWh lithium-ion battery
  • 0–60 mph in 1.55 seconds
  • A 190 mph top speed
  • 3g cornering and braking
  • Up to 2,000 kg of downforce available from a standstill

These are manufacturer-published figures, not independent test results. The production-form PURE is also not identical to the prototype that set the 2022 Goodwood time: McMurtry says 95% of its components are new compared with its prototypes, and the battery has grown from 60 kWh to 100 kWh. Goodwood’s July 2026 account also describes changes to the suspension, tyres, cooling, steering, and fan system. McMurtry’s announcement; Goodwood’s account

How do the fans create downforce?

Rather than relying only on speed over shaped bodywork to generate aerodynamic load, the PURE uses two high-speed fans to draw air from a sealed area beneath the chassis. This lowers pressure under the car and pulls it toward the surface, allowing downforce from zero road speed, according to McMurtry. The company says the fans can spin at up to 23,000 rpm and that using two provides redundancy. McMurtry Automotive

That system helps explain both the car’s unusual low-speed grip and its conspicuous fan sound. Goodwood described the production-form car’s sound as more like a jet plane than a car, but did not publish a decibel reading. Goodwood

Is the Spéirling really the loudest electric car?

That superlative is not established by the available figures. New Atlas reported on 13 July 2021 that McMurtry gave AutoTrader a figure of 120 dB in a video interview about an early version of the Spéirling. The report does not specify a measurement distance, protocol, ambient conditions, or an independent meter reading. It therefore cannot serve as a like-for-like comparison with other electric cars—or as a verified noise measurement of the 2026 production-form PURE. New Atlas

It is fair to describe the Spéirling as unusually noisy for an EV because of its fan system and to note that Goodwood compared its sound to a jet plane. It is not fair to present “loudest electric car ever built” as a proven, independently measured ranking.

Is the Spéirling a road car, and when is it available?

McMurtry presents the production-form PURE as a hyper track car and describes organized owner track events. The 2 July 2026 announcement does not claim ordinary road-car homologation, so it should not be described as a road-legal car on this evidence. McMurtry announced a price of £995,000—approximately $1.3 million or €1.15 million—plus local taxes, shipping, and options, with first deliveries expected to begin later in 2026. Those are manufacturer-announced figures and timing, not confirmation of current delivery status in every market. McMurtry Automotive

What to keep in mind when comparing its claims

  • Separate the 2022 prototype from the production-form PURE and the PURE VP1 used for the 2025 Top Gear Test Track result.
  • Compare lap times only on the same course and under appropriately defined conditions; a hillclimb is not a circuit lap.
  • Keep manufacturer specifications distinct from independently measured results.
  • Treat the 120 dB figure as an attributed 2021 claim about an early version, not a production-car noise test.
