McLaren revealed the W1 on October 6, 2024. The debut is now a past event: McLaren presented the hybrid hypercar as the successor to the F1 and P1, and as the newest car in its “1” lineage. Its launch specifications included 1,275 PS, a 1,399 kg kerb weight and a manufacturer-claimed maximum of 1,000 kg of downforce.

When was the McLaren W1 revealed?

The W1 made its public debut on October 6, 2024. Car and Driver had reported the announced name and reveal date on September 27, 2024, before McLaren’s launch. Car and Driver’s September 2024 report records that pre-launch announcement.

Why does McLaren call it an F1 and P1 successor?

McLaren describes the W1 as a successor to both the F1 and P1, continuing its “1” car lineage. That is the manufacturer’s positioning, not a claim that the three cars share the same design or engineering approach: they belong to different eras.

McLaren CEO Michael Leiters said in the company’s October 6, 2024 release: “The McLaren W1 is a celebration of both the excellence of the iconic McLaren F1 and McLaren P1™ and the manifestation of McLaren’s World Championship mindset.” McLaren’s P1 legacy page describes the earlier car’s hybrid powertrain and gives a 0–200 km/h time of 6.8 seconds; it is useful context, but not a like-for-like test comparison with the W1.

What did McLaren announce about the W1’s power and performance?

McLaren’s 2024 launch release specified a hybrid powertrain combining the MHP-8 V8 combustion engine with an electric E-module. The figures below are manufacturer-published specifications and claims, not independently tested results.

Specification McLaren’s launch figure
System output 1,275 PS
MHP-8 V8 engine output 928 PS
Electric E-module output 347 PS
Kerb weight 1,399 kg
Power-to-weight ratio 911 PS per tonne
0–200 km/h 5.8 seconds
0–300 km/h Less than 12.7 seconds
Maximum speed 350 km/h, electronically limited

McLaren also claimed up to 1,000 kg of downforce, attributing it to ground-effect aerodynamics and active aero. The “up to” figure is a launch claim; it should not be read as a measured result across all speeds or conditions.

How many W1s were planned, and what was the launch price?

McLaren announced a customer production run of 399 cars and said every customer car had already been allocated at the time of the 2024 announcement. The company stated an approximate UK price of £2.0 million including taxes, with the final cost dependent on personalisation through McLaren Special Operations (MSO). These are historical launch details, not a current offer or confirmation of present delivery status. The available sources do not establish a current price or live inventory.

What makes a McLaren “1” car?

In this case, “1” refers to McLaren’s own flagship lineage framing: the company links the W1 with the F1 and P1 as successive landmark cars. The label expresses that intended relationship; it does not establish that the cars are direct technical equivalents. Their powertrain architectures, mass, aerodynamic methods, performance claims and production circumstances must be considered in their respective historical contexts.
