Yes—Mazda’s rotary-engine work is active. The company resumed mass production of rotary-engine vehicles in June 2023 with the MX-30 e-SKYACTIV R-EV, where the rotary engine serves as a generator, and reinstated a dedicated rotary development group in February 2024. Mazda has also described continued work on generator applications, emissions compliance and carbon-neutral fuels. Those steps confirm ongoing development, not a promised rotary sports car.
What Mazda’s rotary engine does in production today
The MX-30 e-SKYACTIV R-EV uses a rotary engine in a different role from the engine in a traditional sports car. It is a series plug-in hybrid: an electric motor drives the wheels, while the rotary engine produces electricity as a generator. Mazda unveiled the vehicle in January 2023. Mazda’s launch announcement describes the system and gives launch specifications for the European model.
Those European launch figures were an 85 km electric-only range on the WLTP test cycle, a 17.8 kWh lithium-ion battery, a 50 L fuel tank and a 1,500 W power-supply function. Mazda cautioned that actual electric range varies with driving conditions. These are launch specifications, not a guarantee that every model year or market has the same figures.
The generator application takes advantage of the rotary engine’s compact packaging. In January 2026, Mazda described engineering choices made for generator duty: a long-stroke design for fuel economy, aluminum to reduce weight and surface treatment to improve wear resistance. The company also reported industry award recognition for the rotary-generator plug-in-hybrid system, which it identifies as installed in the MX-30 ROTARY-EV. Mazda’s January 2026 announcement discusses the system and recognition.

How the rotary program resumed
Mazda introduced its first rotary-equipped vehicle, the Cosmo Sport, in 1967. Production of the RX-8 ended in 2012. In June 2023, Mazda resumed mass production of rotary-engine vehicles with the MX-30 R-EV, describing it as its 12th rotary-equipped model. On October 30, 2023, the company also announced that cumulative production of rotary-engine vehicles had surpassed two million units. On February 1, 2024, Mazda reinstated a dedicated RE Development Group after almost six years without one. The company said 36 engineers would gather in the group. Ichiro Hirose, then Mazda’s Director, Senior Managing Executive Officer and Chief Technology Officer, called the rotary engine “a special symbol of our ‘challenger spirit.’” Mazda’s announcement sets out the group’s formation and stated mission.

What Mazda says it is developing
Rotary engines for generator use
Mazda says the RE Development Group will continue evolving rotary engines used as generators. That work builds on the production application in the MX-30 R-EV; it does not by itself signal a new vehicle or a return to a rotary-powered sports car.
Emissions compliance
In its October 2025 strategy briefing, Mazda said combustion improvements developed for SKYACTIV-Z would inform a roadmap for rotary-engine emissions compliance. This is a stated research and compliance direction, not a disclosed rotary-engine specification or a production commitment. Mazda’s investor presentation library hosts its strategy materials.

Carbon-neutral fuels
Mazda has also named research into applying carbon-neutral fuels as part of the rotary group’s work. The company’s statement describes a research priority; it does not establish a specific fuel partnership, a commercial fuel offering or a launch timetable.
Does Mazda have a new rotary sports car planned?
The Mazda announcements cited here do not announce a new rotary sports car, another future rotary model or a launch date for one. The confirmed production role is as a generator in a series plug-in hybrid, while the development group’s stated priorities concern generator evolution, emissions compliance and carbon-neutral fuels. It would be inaccurate to treat that research program as confirmation of an RX successor.

Where the MX-30 R-EV is available
Mazda’s February 2024 announcement said the MX-30 R-EV had been introduced in Japan and Europe. That does not establish current sales availability in every market in 2026. Check Mazda’s local site or a retailer for the market, model year and trim you are considering.
