The Mazdaspeed3 made a simple but compelling case: a five-door compact hatchback could pair everyday utility with serious factory performance. Mazda’s launch figures gave its turbocharged 2.3-liter engine 263 horsepower and 280 lb-ft of torque; the redesigned 2010 model kept the MZR 2.3-liter DISI Turbo while bringing bolder styling and improved handling.
What made the Mazdaspeed3 special?
Mazda’s 2007 launch press kit described the MAZDASPEED3 as a five-door powered by a turbocharged, intercooled 2.3-liter direct-injection gasoline engine. That combination—not just the output, but the pairing of performance hardware with a useful hatchback body—is the heart of the car’s appeal. Mazda framed the engine as a balance of response, acceleration, fuel economy, and emissions. The press kit says: “The DISI Turbo engine is engineered to achieve three aspects of performance that are difficult to realize with conventional manifold injection engines: good fuel-economy and low exhaust-gas emissions; powerful acceleration thanks to the turbocharger; and a full and flat torque curve throughout the rev range for exceptional engine response.” That is Mazda’s own description of its engineering goals, not an independent test result.
How much horsepower does a Mazdaspeed3 have?
For the 2007 launch model, Mazda rated the turbocharged 2.3-liter engine at 263 horsepower at 5,500 rpm and 280 lb-ft of torque at 3,000 rpm. These are Mazda’s factory figures for that launch model, not a claim that every model year had identical calibration or output.

Mazda’s 2013 owner’s manual lists the MZR 2.3 DISI Turbo at 2,261 cc displacement and a 9.5:1 compression ratio. Those are specification details for the engine as listed in that manual, rather than a complete year-by-year performance history. The 2013 Mazda3/Mazdaspeed3 owner’s manual is the reference for those figures.
What changed in the 2010 Mazdaspeed3?
Mazda’s 2010 announcement describes a redesigned MAZDASPEED3 with bolder styling and improved handling, while carrying forward the MZR 2.3-liter DISI Turbo engine. In other words, the update retained the model’s defining engine family but revised the car around it. Mazda’s announcement does not establish that the engine calibration or every component remained unchanged. Mazda’s 2010 MAZDASPEED3 announcement describes the redesign.

How did the hatchback format fit the performance?
The five-door body gave the Mazdaspeed3 a practical form without making practicality its only selling point. Mazda’s 2007 material explicitly identifies the five-door configuration, so the useful contrast is supported by the car’s factory description: compact-hatchback utility alongside turbocharged performance. The available official material does not provide cargo-volume or passenger-space figures here, so the hatchback format should not be mistaken for a quantified comparison with other cars.
For a market-specific transmission detail, Mazda Canada’s information for the 2013 model identifies a close-ratio six-speed manual. What is known—and not established—about owning one today?
The factory sources support the model’s performance specifications, five-door body, and broad second-generation changes. They do not establish current parts availability, the condition of a particular used car, a comprehensive reliability profile, or a definitive list of common failures. A prospective buyer should verify the exact model year’s specifications, assess the individual vehicle, and check official recall information using its VIN. Avoid treating anecdotes about individual cars as population-wide failure rates.
