The CX-50 is a conventional hybrid; the CX-70 and CX-90 are plug-in hybrids. Mazda has also said a next-generation CX-5 with its own hybrid system is planned for 2027, but that is a future plan, not a model currently listed for sale.
Which Mazda models are hybrid in the U.S.?
Mazda USA’s 2026 model listings identify three electrified crossovers. Only the CX-50 carries the “Hybrid” designation; the CX-70 and CX-90 are plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs). The prices and efficiency ratings below are Mazda-published figures for the 2026 lineup, not guaranteed transaction prices or real-world results.

MPG and MPGe are different measures, so the CX-50’s 38 mpg should not be read as a directly comparable version of the PHEVs’ 61 or 56 MPGe. MPG expresses fuel economy for a gasoline vehicle; MPGe is an energy-equivalence measure used for electrified vehicles.

Is the Mazda CX-50 Hybrid a plug-in?
No. Mazda lists the CX-50 as a hybrid, not a PHEV. Mazda’s 2025 Sustainability Report identifies its hybrid system as Toyota’s. The two plug-in models in this U.S. lineup are the CX-70 PHEV and CX-90 PHEV.
Does Mazda have a plug-in hybrid?
Yes. For the 2026 U.S. lineup, Mazda lists the CX-70 PHEV and CX-90 PHEV. Both are five-door crossover options, with the CX-70 listed for five occupants and the CX-90 for seven. Mazda’s published combined ratings are 61 MPGe for the CX-70 and 56 MPGe for the CX-90.

Which one fits your needs?
- Choose the CX-50 Hybrid if you want the listed conventional hybrid and five seats, with Mazda’s estimate of 38 mpg combined.
- Consider the CX-70 PHEV if a five-seat plug-in hybrid is the priority.
- Consider the CX-90 PHEV if you need seven seats and want a plug-in hybrid.
The figures here do not establish electric-only range, charging time, connector type, or home-charger compatibility. Check the relevant model’s current specifications and owner documentation for those details before choosing charging equipment.
Is Mazda making a hybrid CX-5?
Mazda said in its 2025 Sustainability Report and March 2025 electrification briefing that a next CX-5 with an in-house hybrid system was planned for launch in 2027. Mazda described it as pairing the company’s SKYACTIV-Z engine with its own hybrid system. This is a corporate plan announced in 2025; it does not mean the vehicle is available in the 2026 U.S. lineup, and timing may change. Why Mazda’s electrified lineup varies by market
Mazda’s global electrification roadmap includes technologies and vehicles for different markets. The company’s reports discuss hybrid systems, mild-hybrid work, and partner-developed vehicles including the EZ-6, Mazda6e, and EZ-60. Those global projects do not establish U.S. retail availability. For U.S. shoppers, Mazda USA’s current model listings are the relevant guide to what is listed domestically.
