There is no universal winner between the Mazda6 and Volkswagen Passat: model year, country, body style, engine, trim and the condition of the individual car all matter. In iSeeCars’ U.S. comparison of 2021 models, the Mazda6 comes out slightly ahead on its calculated fuel-efficiency, reliability, resale and overall-quality measures, while the Passat has more interior volume and a lower reported used-price range. Those are comparison-source results, not guarantees about a particular car.
What the comparison covers—and what it does not
The most directly matched U.S. figures available here compare a 2021 Mazda6 with a 2021 Passat on iSeeCars. Cars.com compares a 2021 Mazda6 with a 2022 Passat, so its figures should not be blended into a single model-year comparison. Current UK manufacturer pages describe a different market and body-style mix: Mazda’s cited guide covers Saloon and Tourer versions, while Volkswagen’s current Passat line-up is an Estate. Specifications and availability vary by market and vehicle; these sources do not establish one globally applicable spec sheet.

Which is more reliable?
There is no definitive reliability winner established by these comparison sources. iSeeCars rates the 2021 Mazda6 7.7/10 and the 2021 Passat 7.6/10. Cars.com’s consumer ratings are a different measure and a different year pairing: it shows 4.7/5 for the 2021 Mazda6 and 3.2/5 for the 2022 Passat. Neither set of scores should be read as a controlled, lifetime reliability study.
For a used-car decision, service records and the condition of the individual vehicle are more useful than treating either publisher’s score as a prediction. Compare the maintenance history, have the car independently inspected, and review safety information for its exact year and market.
Which is more fuel efficient?
In iSeeCars’ U.S. comparison of 2021 models, the Mazda6 is listed at an average 29 mpg and the Passat at 28 mpg. The Passat has the longer reported highway range in that comparison: 666 miles versus 574 miles for the Mazda6. These are publisher-reported estimates, not independent road-test results, and should not be assumed to apply to every engine or trim.

Fuel-economy figures depend on market, engine, trim and test cycle. Do not compare these U.S. mpg estimates directly with UK WLTP figures or assume that a different model year or powertrain will return the same result.
Which offers more space?
iSeeCars reports greater interior volume for the 2021 Passat than the 2021 Mazda6 in its U.S. comparison. For a UK illustration, Mazda’s cited specification guide lists 480 litres of luggage space for the Mazda6 Saloon. Volkswagen’s current dimensions page lists a 690.1-litre boot for a Passat Estate grouping and 510.0 litres for its separately shown plug-in-hybrid grouping. The Mazda Saloon and Volkswagen Estate figures are not a like-for-like body-style comparison.
Mazda’s guide also lists Tourer configurations with up to 522 litres to the tonneau cover and 1,664 litres in two-seat mode. These are figures for configurations in that guide, not a guarantee of current availability in every market. Volkswagen says published specifications may differ from vehicles available from stock, so confirm the exact vehicle’s specification before relying on a capacity figure.

How do prices and resale compare?
For 2021 U.S. models, iSeeCars estimates a used-price range of $16,083–$26,998 for the Mazda6 and $13,532–$23,991 for the Passat. It also estimates five-year depreciation of 43.3% for the Mazda6 and 48.2% for the Passat. These are publisher estimates, not current local offers or guaranteed future resale values. Compare cars with similar mileage, condition, history and trim in your own market before deciding which is better value.
What changes in the UK line-up?
UK manufacturer specifications illustrate why market and body style need to be explicit. Mazda’s cited guide lists Mazda6 Saloon dimensions of 4,870 mm long, 1,840 mm wide and 1,450 mm high, with a 2,830 mm wheelbase. It includes UK examples with 2.0- and 2.5-litre petrol engines and a 2.2-litre diesel; the guide is not a guarantee of current local availability.

Volkswagen’s current UK Passat technical data identifies an Estate and lists petrol mild-hybrid and plug-in-hybrid options, including 150 PS mild-hybrid and 204 PS and 272 PS plug-in-hybrid configurations on the page reviewed. The dimensions page gives 4,917 mm length, 1,849 mm width, 1,521 mm height and a 2,837 mm wheelbase for one grouping; its plug-in-hybrid grouping is listed separately. These current UK specifications should not be combined with older U.S. sedan ratings as if they described the same cars.

How to choose between two actual used cars
- Match the vehicles: Confirm model year, country or market, body style, trim, engine and transmission. A Saloon-to-Estate comparison is not an apples-to-apples luggage-space comparison.
- Compare local asking prices: Find examples with similar mileage and equipment, then account for condition and documented history. Published ranges are estimates, not a valuation of the specific car.
- Check the exact car’s records and condition: Review its service history and arrange an independent inspection rather than relying on a model-level rating.
- Verify official safety information: Check the rating for the exact model year and market. Cars.com attributes NHTSA overall ratings of 5/5 stars to the 2021 Mazda6 and 4/5 to the 2022 Passat; iSeeCars lists average ratings of 5/5 and 4.86/5 for its 2021 pair. These scores differ by source and year pairing, so they are not interchangeable.
