On a Chevy Cruze, diagnostic trouble code P0171 means “Fuel Trim System Lean.” It describes a lean-running condition; it does not identify a specific failed part. GM service bulletins point to different possible faults on different Cruze engines and generations, so identify the car’s year, engine, generation, and region before deciding what to inspect or replace.
What P0171 means on a Chevy Cruze
P0171 is GM’s label for “Fuel Trim System Lean.” In practical terms, the code reports that the engine’s fuel-trim system has detected a lean condition. The code alone cannot tell you whether the cause is in the PCV system, the air-cleaner assembly, or another part of the vehicle.

The GM bulletins discussed below cover specific engine and model-year combinations. They are not a complete diagnostic procedure for every Cruze, and they do not establish that one cause is the most common. Use the correct vehicle’s current service information and confirm the fault before purchasing parts.

“Cruze” and “2016” are not enough to select a diagnostic path. Record the model year, VIN, engine code, generation, and region. Also note all stored and pending codes and the symptoms. A repair bulletin for a first-generation 1.4L engine does not automatically apply to a second-generation 1.4L LE2.

| Configuration | GM-documented possibility | What to focus on |
|---|---|---|
| North American 2011–2016 Cruze, 1.4L LUJ, LUU, or LUV | A torn PCV crankcase pressure-control diaphragm may allow unmetered air into the crankcase, according to GM bulletin 19-NA-114 (May 2019). | Confirm PCV valve performance before replacing the camshaft cover. GM bulletin 19-NA-114 (PDF). |
| 2011–2012 Cruze, 1.4L LUJ | A PCV vacuum leak in the camshaft cover may be associated with whistle noise, rough running, and/or P0171, according to GM preliminary information PI0850A (October 2015). | Check current service guidance, including the latest PIP5197, before proceeding. GM PI0850A (PDF). |
| 2016–2019 second-generation Cruze, VIN B, 1.4L LE2, in North America, Australia, or New Zealand | An air-cleaner element bracket that is not properly installed on its mount may warp over time and cause listed airflow-related codes, including P0171, according to GM bulletin 18-NA-118 (September 2020). | Inspect the bracket-to-mount connection if this configuration applies. GM bulletin 18-NA-118 (PDF). |
How to narrow down the cause
1. Record the vehicle and code details
Write down the model year, VIN, engine code, generation, and region, along with every stored and pending trouble code and the symptoms. This helps prevent applying a bulletin to a Cruze with a different engine or PCV arrangement.
2. Match the vehicle to applicable GM guidance
For a North American 2011–2016 1.4L LUJ, LUU, or LUV, GM bulletin 19-NA-114 describes a possible torn PCV diaphragm. For a 2011–2012 1.4L LUJ, PI0850A discusses a camshaft-cover PCV vacuum leak and instructs technicians to check the latest PIP5197. For a 2016–2019 second-generation VIN B 1.4L LE2 in the regions listed above, 18-NA-118 points to the air-cleaner element bracket and mount. Confirm applicability by VIN and current service information.

3. Confirm the suspected component before replacing it
GM’s 19-NA-114 specifically says PCV valve performance must be confirmed before replacing the camshaft cover. A P0171 code by itself is not that confirmation. If the applicable bulletin does not fit the car, or the described condition is not found, continue diagnosis using service information for that exact vehicle rather than assuming the same fault.

A code reader can show codes and may provide live data, but the cited bulletins do not establish that an inexpensive reader alone can diagnose the root cause. Likewise, these documents do not supply a universal DIY repair sequence, torque specifications, or a complete list of causes for every Cruze.

What the GM bulletins do—and do not—establish
- They document specific possible causes for defined Cruze engines, years, and regions; they do not prove that any particular car has that fault.
- They do not establish a failure rate, repair cost, or that a PCV diaphragm is the “most common” cause of P0171.
- They do not support replacing a camshaft cover, PCV component, or air-cleaner assembly on every Cruze that sets the code.
- PI0850A is preliminary information dated October 2015 and says to check the latest PIP5197. Bulletin 19-NA-114, dated May 2019, replaces PIP5197M.
- Any warranty or special-coverage eligibility depends on the vehicle and is not established by these bulletins; ask Chevrolet or an authorized dealer to check by VIN.
