How many Mazda3s did Mazda sell?
Mazda North American Operations reported 3,704 U.S. Mazda3 sales for September 2026, compared with 1,500 in the same month a year earlier. The company’s October 1, 2026 release calculates the year-over-year increase at 146.9%; “nearly 150%” is a reasonable rounded description. Mazda’s September 2026 sales release reports unit totals and the percentage change.

The result came during a strong month for Mazda overall: the company sold 34,519 vehicles in the United States in September 2026, up 31.9% from September 2025. The Mazda3’s gain was substantially larger than the company’s overall increase.
Why did Mazda3 sales rise?
The reported totals establish that sales rose; they do not establish why. Mazda’s release does not attribute the increase to a particular cause, and no explanation from a Mazda spokesperson is included in the cited coverage.

The Drive suggested that buyers may be turning to sedans and hatchbacks for relief from high gas prices. That is the publication’s interpretation, not a causal finding in Mazda’s sales data. Mazda identifies the 2026 Mazda3 as a sedan and a hatchback in its 2026 Mazda3 pricing and packaging announcement, but that model description does not show why customers bought more of them.
Does this mean small cars are booming?
Not on the evidence of this figure alone. The September comparison shows a sharp year-over-year increase for one model in one month. It cannot by itself establish that compact cars across the market are gaining popularity, or that Mazda3 sales will remain elevated.

The Drive’s October 5 roundup described the Mazda3’s month as part of a “small-car boom.” That framing goes beyond what the Mazda3 sales release alone can verify. Assessing a broader or durable trend would require comparable sales data across small-car models and over a longer period.
