The short answer: Mazda does not use one universal trim hierarchy across its U.S. lineup. Names such as 2.5 S, Select, Preferred, Premium, Premium Plus, Turbo, Turbo S, Hybrid, PHEV, Carbon Edition and Meridian Edition are useful clues, but their equipment and position change by model, body style and powertrain. A CX-5 Preferred, Mazda3 Preferred and CX-90 Preferred are not interchangeable vehicles.
This guide explains the 2026 U.S. Mazda trim structure, including what the names generally indicate, where the exceptions are, and the starting MSRPs for the current lineup. Prices are before destination, taxes, title, license, dealer charges and options; verify the exact vehicle on Mazda’s live comparison page or window sticker before buying.

How Mazda trim names work
The most reliable way to read a Mazda model name is from left to right:
Example: 2026 Mazda CX-50 2.5 Turbo Meridian Edition

- CX-50: the vehicle family.
- 2.5 Turbo: the engine and powertrain branch.
- Meridian Edition: an adventure-oriented appearance and equipment package.
That is more accurate than assuming every Mazda follows a simple base-to-luxury ladder. Mazda often builds several intersecting branches: a naturally aspirated gasoline version, a turbo version, a hybrid or plug-in-hybrid version, and special editions that emphasize styling or a particular use case.
Mazda’s official 2026 vehicle overview confirms the current U.S. lineup covered here: Mazda3 sedan and hatchback, MX-5 Miata, CX-30, CX-50, CX-5, CX-70 and CX-90, including selected hybrid and plug-in-hybrid models.
The common Mazda trim terms
2.5 S: usually the naturally aspirated gasoline branch
On the Mazda3, CX-30, CX-5 and non-turbo CX-50, 2.5 S generally identifies the naturally aspirated 2.5-liter four-cylinder branch. It usually marks the starting point for that engine family, but it does not describe one standardized equipment level.
Recommended Free Tools
For example, the 2026 CX-5 2.5 S includes cloth seats, 17-inch alloy wheels, standard i-ACTIV AWD and a 12.9-inch center touchscreen. The 2026 CX-30 2.5 S is a 186-horsepower AWD crossover with a different body, interior and feature package. Always read the model-specific equipment list on Mazda’s CX-30 comparison page or the relevant model page.
Select and Select Sport: the first major convenience upgrade
Select generally adds comfort, convenience and appearance features while keeping the same basic engine. On the 2026 CX-5, 2.5 S Select adds leatherette-trimmed seats, wireless phone charging, automatic-folding side mirrors and a frameless auto-dimming mirror.
Mazda3 uses the more specific name Select Sport. The 2026 Mazda3 2.5 S Select Sport includes features such as 18-inch black-finish wheels, leatherette sport seats and dual-zone automatic climate control. CX-90 Select is not simply a larger CX-5 Select; it is a three-row package with its own seating, technology and equipment mix.
Preferred: generally the upper-middle comfort trim
Preferred is usually aimed at buyers who want noticeable comfort upgrades without paying for the most expensive package. Depending on the model, it may add a power liftgate, larger wheels, a power driver’s seat, seat memory, heated seats, a moonroof or upgraded cabin features.
- 2026 CX-5 Preferred: power liftgate, 19-inch wheels, 10-way power driver’s seat and black-finish roof rails.
- 2026 Mazda3 Preferred: moonroof, heated front seats and an eight-way power driver’s seat with memory.
- 2026 CX-90 Preferred: features including ventilated front seats, heated second-row seating, memory settings, an eight-way power passenger seat, heated steering wheel and a larger infotainment display.
These examples show why “Preferred means leather” or “Preferred always has a moonroof” is not a dependable rule. The name indicates a market position, not a universal parts list.
Premium: more luxury and technology, but not always the top trim
Premium generally moves into richer seating materials, upgraded lighting, larger wheels, a moonroof, more advanced displays, premium audio or additional driver-assistance technology. It is often a substantial step above Preferred.
On the 2026 CX-5, Premium includes leather-trimmed seats, a panoramic moonroof, an Active Driving Display and ventilated front seats. On the CX-70, Premium and Premium Plus sit above Preferred in the inline-six range. The MX-5 Miata does not use Premium at all; its comfort-oriented upper trim is Grand Touring.

Premium Plus: usually the most fully equipped regular package
Premium Plus commonly adds Mazda’s most extensive convenience, camera, infotainment and driver-assistance features within a particular powertrain branch. It is often the highest regular equipment package, but it is not automatically the most powerful Mazda or the highest-priced version.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteThe 2026 CX-5 Premium Plus adds a 15.6-inch center touchscreen, 360-degree camera monitoring, a hands-free power liftgate and paddle shifters. On the CX-70 and CX-90, Premium Plus can add higher-grade materials, advanced parking or braking assistance, a 360-degree view monitor and other premium interior features. Exact equipment varies by model and drivetrain.
Powertrain labels: Turbo, Turbo S, Hybrid and PHEV
Turbo
Turbo identifies a turbocharged engine branch rather than a universal luxury trim. On smaller Mazda models such as the Mazda3, CX-30 and CX-50, the turbocharged 2.5-liter engine is available only in selected packages.
For the 2026 CX-30, the turbo engine produces up to 250 horsepower and 320 lb-ft of torque on premium fuel; output is lower when using regular fuel. The 2026 Mazda3 Turbo Premium Plus also combines the turbocharged engine with standard AWD and top-level equipment. A turbo model may therefore cost more because of both its engine and its equipment, but “Turbo” itself does not always identify one fixed trim level.
Turbo S
Turbo S is used on the larger CX-70 and CX-90 for the higher-output version of Mazda’s 3.3-liter turbocharged inline-six with mild-hybrid assistance. Mazda lists up to 340 horsepower on premium fuel for Turbo S versions; regular-fuel output is lower.
Turbo S is both a powertrain distinction and an equipment branch. It is not a separate Mazda sports-car division and should not be confused with the “S” in 2.5 S. The two uses of the letter are unrelated in practice:
- 2.5 S: generally the naturally aspirated four-cylinder branch.
- Turbo S: the higher-output inline-six branch on CX-70 and CX-90.
Hybrid
For 2026, standalone Hybrid trim naming is used on the CX-50 Hybrid. Mazda describes this system as a 2.5-liter naturally aspirated engine paired with a hybrid battery, three electric motors, an electronically controlled continuously variable transmission and standard electric AWD.
Mazda lists 219 horsepower and an EPA-estimated 38 mpg combined for the CX-50 Hybrid family. Its trim names are Hybrid Preferred, Hybrid Premium and Hybrid Premium Plus. These are not simply gasoline CX-50 trims with a hybrid surcharge; the hybrid powertrain is its own branch with its own equipment and pricing.
PHEV
PHEV means plug-in hybrid electric vehicle. It can be charged from an external power source and should be evaluated differently from a conventional hybrid, particularly if the buyer has access to home charging and regularly drives within the vehicle’s electric range.

- CX-70 PHEV: PHEV SC and PHEV SC Plus; five seats, 323-horsepower system and a $44,450 starting MSRP.
- CX-90 PHEV: PHEV Preferred, PHEV Premium Sport and PHEV Premium Plus; seven seats, 323-horsepower system and a $50,695 starting MSRP.
The CX-70 PHEV and CX-90 PHEV should not be treated as interchangeable simply because both use the PHEV label. They differ in size, seating, packaging and trim availability. See Mazda’s official CX-70 PHEV comparison for the model-specific details.

Special-edition Mazda trim names
Carbon Edition
Carbon Edition is primarily a styling-and-equipment package, not a separate engine family. Its contents vary by vehicle.
- 2026 Mazda3 Carbon Edition: standard AWD, black-finish wheels, red leather-trimmed seats and distinctive exterior details.
- 2026 CX-30 Carbon Edition: based on Preferred equipment and adds Polymetal Gray paint, red leather, black wheels, Bose audio, HD Radio and a frameless auto-dimming mirror with HomeLink.
Carbon Edition can be the right choice for a buyer who values appearance and selected equipment, but it is not automatically equivalent to Premium or Premium Plus.
Aire Edition
Aire Edition is a light-themed appearance and interior package introduced for the 2026 CX-30. It is available with both the naturally aspirated 2.5 S powertrain and the 2.5 Turbo branch.

It should not be assumed to have the same equipment as the CX-30 Premium or Premium Plus.
Meridian Edition
Meridian Edition is the adventure-oriented CX-50 package. For 2026, it is offered with both the naturally aspirated 2.5 S branch and the 2.5 Turbo branch. Mazda describes equipment such as all-terrain tires, black roof rails and distinctive appearance details.
Meridian is therefore a mission-and-style branch that can sit alongside the normal Select–Preferred–Premium progression. A CX-50 2.5 S Meridian Edition is not necessarily “above” every Premium model; it emphasizes a different set of priorities.
Premium Sport
Premium Sport appears on CX-90 and CX-90 PHEV packages. It emphasizes blacked-out exterior styling and a sport-oriented appearance, with equipment that can include black exterior trim, black wheels, special grille and badging treatment and other model-specific upgrades.
Premium Sport is not a synonym for Premium Plus. Both names can appear in the same CX-90 family, and Premium Plus may be positioned above Premium Sport. Check the exact powertrain and package rather than ranking the names by sound.
MX-5 Miata trim levels: a separate naming system
The MX-5 Miata uses a different logic from Mazda’s crossovers and sedans.
- Sport: the entry trim.
- Club: the performance-focused package.
- Grand Touring: adds comfort and safety equipment; with a manual transmission, it retains much of the Club’s performance hardware.
- RF: means Retractable Fastback, the hardtop-style body configuration. It is not a luxury trim.
For 2026, RF versions are available in Club and Grand Touring forms. The soft-top and RF must be compared as separate configurations because body style affects price and equipment.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to choose between Mazda trims
1. Choose the model and body style first
Start with the vehicle itself, not the trim name. A Mazda3 sedan and hatchback use related names but have separate equipment and price ladders. The MX-5 soft top and RF are different body configurations. A CX-70 is a five-seat crossover, while the CX-90 is a larger seven-seat vehicle.
2. Identify the powertrain branch
Before comparing features, decide whether you are looking at naturally aspirated gasoline, turbo, Turbo S, hybrid or PHEV versions. A CX-50 Hybrid, CX-50 Turbo, CX-70 PHEV and CX-90 Turbo S are different mechanical families—not simply four rungs on one trim ladder.

3. Compare the equipment you will actually use
Useful comparison points include:
- Leather or leatherette seating
- Heated or ventilated seats
- Power driver and passenger seats
- Seat memory
- Moonroof or panoramic roof
- Power liftgate or hands-free liftgate
- Premium audio
- 360-degree camera monitoring
- Parking assistance and additional braking features
- Wheel and tire type
- All-terrain tires and roof rails
- Manual or automatic transmission
- Number of seats and second-row configuration
Use the trim name as a shortcut, then verify the official equipment list. Mazda’s CX-5 comparison tool illustrates the level of model-specific detail required.

4. Check drivetrain and seating separately
AWD, electric AWD, seven-seat versus eight-seat layouts, captain’s chairs, manual-transmission availability and the MX-5 RF body style can be tied to specific packages. A higher-sounding trim is not useful if it does not have the drivetrain, seating arrangement or transmission you need.
5. Decide whether a special edition matches your priorities
- Choose Carbon Edition primarily for its appearance and selected equipment.
- Choose Aire Edition on the CX-30 for its light-themed design, with the option of naturally aspirated or turbo performance.
- Choose Meridian Edition on the CX-50 if all-terrain tires, black roof rails and adventure styling matter more than following the standard luxury ladder.
- Choose Premium Sport on the CX-90 or CX-90 PHEV for its sport-themed black exterior treatment, not because the name means the same thing as Premium Plus.
6. Confirm the exact model year
Mazda can add or remove equipment, rename packages, change pricing or alter availability between model years. A 2024 or 2025 buying guide may be useful background, but it should not be used as the final authority for a 2026 vehicle. Confirm the model year on Mazda’s official comparison page, the build configuration and the window sticker.
How to verify a used Mazda’s trim
Do not rely solely on a badge, online listing or seller description. A used Mazda may have dealer-installed accessories, regional equipment or a model-year package that resembles a newer trim without having the same factory content.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →- Record the vehicle identification number, model year, body style, engine and transmission.
- Compare the VIN-specific vehicle description with Mazda’s equipment information for that exact year.
- Inspect the physical equipment: wheels, seats, roof, audio system, driver display, cameras and liftgate.
- Check for dealer-installed accessories and aftermarket replacements.
- Use the factory window sticker or build sheet whenever available.
For a used vehicle, the VIN-specific build information is more dependable than assuming that a badge such as Preferred or Premium means the same thing across years. If you are shopping remotely, you can check current Mazda inventory for new vehicles, while a used purchase should be supported by a VIN and factory-equipment verification before money changes hands.
Common Mazda trim mistakes
- Assuming Mazda has one universal hierarchy: it does not. Each model and powertrain branch has its own structure.
- Reading 2.5 S as a luxury or sport designation: it generally identifies the naturally aspirated engine branch.
- Assuming Preferred always means leather: seating materials and other features vary by model.
- Assuming Premium is always the top trim: Turbo S, PHEV and special branches may sit above or beside it.
- Calling Turbo S a standalone sports-car division: on CX-70 and CX-90, it denotes the higher-output inline-six branch.
- Treating Carbon, Aire, Meridian and Premium Sport as equivalents: they are different model-specific appearance or mission packages.
- Comparing sedan and hatchback prices as if they were identical: Mazda3 body styles have separate configurations.
- Ignoring fuel requirements for maximum turbo output: Mazda’s highest horsepower figures for the small turbo and Turbo S engines are associated with premium fuel.
- Using an old trim guide for a new vehicle: model-year equipment and prices change.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Mazda Preferred better than Premium?
Usually, Premium is positioned above Preferred within the same model and powertrain branch, but the names are not universal across the lineup. Check the exact vehicle’s equipment list, especially on CX-70, CX-90 and special-edition models.
What does the S mean in Mazda 2.5 S?
On models such as the Mazda3, CX-30, CX-5 and non-turbo CX-50, 2.5 S generally identifies the naturally aspirated 2.5-liter four-cylinder branch. It is not a universal equipment grade.
What is the difference between Mazda Turbo and Turbo S?
Turbo identifies a turbocharged engine branch. Turbo S is used on the CX-70 and CX-90 for the higher-output 3.3-liter turbocharged inline-six with mild-hybrid assistance. Turbo S is not used as a universal sport trim across Mazda’s lineup.
Is Mazda Carbon Edition a higher trim?
Carbon Edition is a model-specific styling and equipment package. It may be positioned differently depending on the vehicle and is not automatically equivalent to Premium or Premium Plus.
What does RF mean on the MX-5 Miata?
RF means Retractable Fastback, the MX-5’s hardtop-style body configuration. It describes the body style, not a luxury or performance trim.
Are Mazda trim prices the same in every state?
No. The listed starting MSRPs exclude destination, taxes, title, license, dealer charges and options. Inventory, incentives and dealer pricing can also vary. Confirm the final price on the window sticker and purchase paperwork.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Mazda reuses a familiar vocabulary, but it does not apply that vocabulary identically to every vehicle. Start with the model and body style, identify the powertrain branch, then compare the actual equipment list. Treat Preferred, Premium and Premium Plus as model-specific package names; treat Turbo, Turbo S, Hybrid and PHEV as powertrain clues; and treat Carbon, Aire, Meridian and Premium Sport as specialized appearance or mission packages. For a new vehicle, verify the live build page and window sticker. For a used Mazda, verify the VIN-specific factory equipment.
