The X-Coupe carries the headline powertrain and sustainability proposal, combining a two-rotor rotary turbo engine, motor and battery with Mazda’s microalgae-derived fuel research and experimental exhaust CO₂ capture. These are concept vehicles and company-stated plans, not proof of production readiness or independently verified net-negative emissions.
What Mazda showed at Japan Mobility Show 2025
Mazda framed its exhibit around the theme “The joy of driving fuels a sustainable tomorrow,” looking toward a 2035 vision of combining driving enjoyment with a sustainable society. The public show ran October 31 through November 9, 2025, at Tokyo Big Sight in Tokyo. Mazda’s exhibit plans also included CO₂-capture technology, algae-derived fuel and the all-new European-specification CX-5. What the Vision X-Coupe’s figures mean
Mazda describes the X-Coupe as a plug-in hybrid using a two-rotor rotary turbo engine alongside an electric motor and battery. Its published concept specifications are 510 PS maximum output, 160 km of motor-only range, and up to 800 km when the engine is used in combination. These are Mazda’s figures for the concept, not independently measured test results. The company’s concept feature and official release provide the specifications.

The figures describe the proposal, not a confirmed retail vehicle or a guaranteed real-world range. The available Mazda material does not provide independent testing conditions or establish that this powertrain will reach production.
How Mazda says microalgae fuel works
Mazda’s explanation starts with algae growth: microalgae absorb CO₂ and store oil in their cells. That oil can be extracted and refined into fuel. Mazda also says the remaining biomass could be reused, for example in food products or organic fertilizer. The rationale is to use carbon absorbed during growth as feedstock for fuel, rather than relying solely on newly extracted fossil carbon. Mazda President and CEO Masahiro Moro reported that the company produced over one liter of fuel from a 1,000-liter culture tank in about two weeks — Mazda Motor Corporation, 2025. This is a company-reported research result, not a commercial production rate or evidence of fuel availability at retail. Mazda’s technical interview also identifies challenges including outdoor cultivation stability and scaling production without compromising oil quantity and quality.
What Mazda Mobile Carbon Capture is intended to do
Microalgae fuel and exhaust capture are related parts of Mazda’s concept, but they are separate technologies. Mazda Mobile Carbon Capture is its proposed method for separating CO₂ from engine exhaust. Mazda says captured CO₂ could be directed back into algae production, used to promote crop growth or converted into carbon materials. If paired with algae fuel, the proposed loop would recapture some exhaust carbon for possible reuse rather than simply releasing it.

Mazda CTO Ryuichi Umeshita said, “We’ve confirmed in experiments that we can separate CO₂ from exhaust gases using CO₂ adsorbents.” He also said technical and business hurdles remained and that Mazda planned a proof-of-concept test in the 2025 Super Taikyu Series. The experimental separation claim and the stated obstacles are described in Mazda’s technical interview.
Umeshita identified regulatory challenges for the rotary engine and fuel cost as additional obstacles. The company’s “the more you drive, the more you reduce CO₂” formulation should therefore be read as Mazda’s design claim or ambition for a future system—not as an established result for a production car.

What the Vision X-Compact proposes
The X-Compact is a separate concept from the X-Coupe’s powertrain and carbon-capture story. Mazda describes a “human sensory digital model” and empathetic AI intended to make interaction feel more natural. The concept could support conversation, anticipate the driver’s needs and suggest destinations. Mazda presented both vehicles as vision models, and its published material does not establish a production launch, consumer availability for the algae-derived fuel, or commercial availability of the capture equipment. The company describes experiments and planned testing, while also acknowledging technical, business, regulatory, cost and scale-up hurdles.

The sustainability case also remains a proposal rather than an independently demonstrated lifecycle result. The available sources do not provide an independent lifecycle analysis quantifying net emissions, so they do not establish that the system would be carbon neutral or net negative in real-world operation. Mazda President and CEO Masahiro Moro said at the show, “The phrase, ‘The joy of driving fuels a sustainable tomorrow,’ expresses not only Mazda’s fundamental spirit, but also the core of its future challenges.” Mazda reproduced the statement in its official Japan Mobility Show release.
