Verdict: Mazda has patented a six-stroke reciprocating engine system that could reform gasoline or another hydrocarbon fuel into hydrogen and carbon. It is a genuine patent concept—not proof that Mazda has built a production engine, completed a road-car test, published efficiency figures, or announced a launch date.
What Mazda’s patent actually proposes
The system described in Mazda’s patent family combines a six-stroke piston-engine cycle with an onboard fuel reformer. Heat and pressure from combustion gases are directed to a decomposer, where hydrocarbon fuel may be broken down into hydrogen and carbon. The hydrogen can then be returned to the engine as fuel, while the carbon is retained in the reforming hardware.

That makes this an onboard fuel-reforming and carbon-retention concept, not a vehicle that creates hydrogen from nothing. Gasoline remains the stored energy source. The reforming process also requires heat, pressure, control systems, and additional hardware.

How the six-stroke cycle works
A conventional gasoline engine uses four piston movements: intake, compression, expansion and exhaust. Mazda’s proposed cycle inserts two additional movements between combustion and exhaust.
| Conventional four-stroke engine | Mazda’s proposed six-stroke cycle |
|---|---|
| Intake | Intake |
| Compression | Compression |
| Expansion/power | Expansion/power |
| Exhaust | Re-compression |
| — | Re-expansion |
| — | Exhaust |
- Intake: The piston descends and draws in air and/or a fuel mixture.
- Compression: The piston rises and compresses the charge.
- Expansion: Combustion pushes the piston down and produces engine work.
- Re-compression: The piston rises again instead of immediately expelling the combustion gases. Some of that hot, pressurized gas can be sent through an additional port to the decomposer.
- Re-expansion: The piston descends a second time. Depending on the configuration, gases may be routed back toward the cylinder or intake path.
- Exhaust: The piston rises and expels the remaining exhaust gases.
“Six-stroke” refers to six piston movements, not six separate combustion events. The extra strokes are intended to provide time and pressure for gas routing, fuel reforming and potentially additional expansion work.
How gasoline could become hydrogen and carbon
The patent descriptions show a decomposer connected to the combustion chamber through an additional port and controllable valve. Hydrocarbon fuel is supplied to the decomposer, where combustion heat and pressure assist its decomposition.

- a catalyst or other reforming member;
- a hydrogen-permeable membrane to separate hydrogen;
- a surface or carrier that retains carbon;
- a third cylinder port and on/off valve;
- sensors monitoring engine speed, load, crank angle and decomposer temperature; and
- a route returning separated hydrogen to the combustion chamber.
The related patent applications describe different arrangements, so these should be understood as possible elements of a patent family rather than one confirmed, finalized engine architecture.
The important chemistry point is simple: the hydrogen comes from the hydrocarbon fuel. The vehicle would still consume gasoline or another suitable hydrocarbon fuel, use part of its energy to reform that fuel, burn the resulting hydrogen, and deal with the resulting carbon.
What happens to the carbon?
The proposed system is designed to retain carbon produced during fuel decomposition instead of allowing all of the fuel’s carbon to leave the tailpipe as carbon dioxide. The patent material also describes carbon-recovery and removal arrangements.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →That does not eliminate the carbon problem; it changes its form. A production vehicle would need a practical answer to:
- how much carbon the storage system can hold;
- how often it must be emptied;
- how carbon is safely removed, transported or stored;
- whether carbon fouls catalysts, membranes or passages;
- how the system detects saturation or blockage; and
- what happens if carbon escapes into the engine or exhaust.
“Carbon retention” should not be confused with permanent carbon sequestration. If captured carbon is later oxidized or released, the climate benefit would be reduced or lost.
Would it have zero emissions?
No—not automatically.
Hydrogen contains no carbon, so burning the hydrogen portion of the fuel can avoid carbon-containing exhaust from that portion. But hydrogen combustion still uses air, and the high temperatures inside an engine can produce nitrogen oxides, or NOx, from nitrogen and oxygen in that air. Mazda’s earlier hydrogen-rotary-engine material also identifies NOx as an issue requiring attention; see Mazda’s hydrogen rotary-engine technology overview.
The patent does not provide validated tailpipe NOx measurements for this six-stroke system. Nor does it provide a public dataset covering carbon monoxide, unconverted hydrocarbons, methane or other products that could result from incomplete reforming or combustion.

Three claims must be kept separate:
- Tailpipe CO2: Could be reduced for fuel carbon that is successfully retained.
- Total greenhouse-gas impact: Depends on fuel production, reformer losses, operating conditions and carbon handling.
- Zero emissions overall: Not supported by the available evidence.
The efficiency question has no public answer yet
There are plausible reasons the design might recover more useful work. The extra re-expansion stroke could extract additional energy from hot gases before exhaust, and hydrogen may offer combustion-control advantages. But those potential benefits must be weighed against the costs of the entire system.

- pumping gases through the third port and reformer;
- heating the catalyst or decomposer;
- separating hydrogen;
- controlling hydrogen injection and combustion;
- managing carbon deposits;
- adding sensors, valves and control software; and
- carrying the carbon-recovery hardware.
A meaningful comparison requires whole-system testing:
Net efficiency = mechanical output ÷ (gasoline energy input + reformer and control energy)
No public Mazda result in the identified sources establishes a fuel-economy or thermal-efficiency advantage over a conventional gasoline engine. Claims that the system is “twice as efficient,” automatically beats an electric vehicle, or delivers diesel-like efficiency from gasoline are not demonstrated by the patent.
Why the system may need hybrid assistance
The patent material acknowledges a significant trade-off: six-stroke operation can produce less output than a conventional four-stroke cycle because the added strokes consume crankshaft time and may introduce flow losses. One related application contemplates an inverter and drive motor to compensate when engine output is insufficient.
A plausible operating strategy would be to use reforming mode at low or medium loads, switch to conventional four-stroke operation when strong output is needed, and use electric assistance for acceleration and other transient demands. That would make the concept more credible as a hybrid powertrain with multiple engine modes than as a simple replacement for an ordinary gasoline engine.
The patent contemplates motor assistance; Mazda has not announced that every implementation would require a hybrid system.

The engineering obstacles
Cold starts
The decomposer relies on combustion heat and temperature monitoring. It may not work effectively when cold, meaning a practical vehicle would likely need another operating mode while the reformer warms. That is an engineering inference, not a Mazda-announced startup procedure.
Recommended Free Tools
High-load operation
Hard acceleration, towing, hill climbing and sustained high-speed driving could favor four-stroke operation or electric assistance if six-stroke mode cannot provide sufficient output. This is an operating-mode compromise, not proof that the concept cannot produce power.
Carbon fouling
Carbon deposition can reduce catalyst activity, obstruct passages, foul membranes and increase service requirements. A production design would need reliable saturation detection, regeneration or replacement procedures, and protection against carbon-contaminated gas entering the engine.
Incomplete reforming
Fuel decomposition may not be complete under every speed, load and temperature condition. The resulting gas could contain hydrogen alongside unconverted fuel, carbon monoxide, methane or other compounds. The patent describes proposed configurations and objectives, not a public emissions certification result.
Hydrogen control and safety
Hydrogen has combustion characteristics that require careful control of injection, ignition, valves and intake conditions. The identified patents focus on the reformer and engine cycle; they do not constitute public vehicle-level validation of hydrogen leakage, backfire, crash safety or long-term durability.
Packaging and maintenance
A production vehicle would need the decomposer, carbon-retention equipment, extra gas paths, valves, sensors and controls to fit alongside the engine, exhaust system, fuel system and possibly a hybrid battery. The carbon container would also create a new service requirement that ordinary gasoline vehicles do not have.

Is this Mazda’s next rotary engine?
There is no confirmed connection. The six-stroke patents identified here describe a reciprocating piston engine, not a rotary engine.
Mazda has separately worked on hydrogen-fueled rotary engines. Its official technology material describes the RENESIS hydrogen rotary as a dual-fuel system capable of operating on hydrogen or gasoline. Mazda’s current roadmap also says combustion improvements associated with Skyactiv-Z will inform future rotary-engine emissions development. Those facts do not establish that the new six-stroke reformer is intended for a rotary application.
What Mazda has actually announced
Mazda’s public 2025 technology and product roadmap focuses on Skyactiv-Z, hybridization, battery-electric vehicles, inline-six engines and continued rotary-engine development. Mazda’s March 18, 2025 roadmap release says the next-generation CX-5 is planned to receive Skyactiv-Z with Mazda’s hybrid system by the end of 2027.
That announced CX-5 and Skyactiv-Z plan is separate from the six-stroke fuel-reforming patent. The patent does not amount to a production announcement, vehicle launch commitment or commercial timetable.
What evidence would show that it is ready?
Before treating this as a consumer technology, look for independently verifiable evidence of:
- a running prototype or vehicle;
- brake thermal-efficiency and fuel-consumption data;
- carbon-capture rate under different loads;
- carbon-container capacity and service interval;
- NOx and other regulated-emissions measurements;
- cold-start and transient-performance results;
- catalyst and membrane durability;
- hydrogen leakage, backfire and crash-safety validation; and
- production weight, cost, packaging and maintenance requirements.
The bottom line
Mazda’s six-stroke hydrogen concept is based on real patent filings, and its architecture is technically more specific than the phrase “gasoline-to-hydrogen engine” suggests. It proposes using extra piston strokes, combustion heat and a decomposer to produce hydrogen from hydrocarbon fuel while retaining carbon.
But a patent is not a prototype or a performance test. Mazda has not publicly demonstrated this system in a road car, supplied verified efficiency or emissions figures, or listed it as a scheduled production powertrain. For now, the accurate description is: a promising but unproven patent for onboard fuel reforming and carbon retention in a six-stroke piston engine.
