Mazda MX-5 Miata Generations: All U.S. Model Years from NA to ND

The complete U.S. Mazda MX-5 Miata timeline: NA 1990–1997, NB 1999–2005, NC 2006–2015, and ND 2016–present, including the 1998 gap, Mazdaspeed, PRHT, RF, and 2019 power increase.

The Mazda MX-5 Miata has four generations in the United States: NA (1990–1997), NB (1999–2005), NC (2006–2015), and ND (2016–present). There was no regular U.S. 1998 model year. The NC launched globally in 2005 but arrived in the United States as a 2006 model, which explains the occasional discrepancy between Mazda’s global history and U.S. model-year charts.

Every generation follows the same basic formula—a lightweight, two-seat, front-engine, rear-wheel-drive convertible—but the differences matter when you are identifying a car, researching specifications, buying parts, or choosing a used Miata. The NA has pop-up headlights, the NB modernizes the original shape, the NC grows larger and adds an optional power-retractable hardtop, and the ND returns to a much lighter platform with Skyactiv power and an available RF retractable fastback.

Generation U.S. model years Model-year notes How to recognize it
NA 1990–1997 Introduced at the 1989 Chicago Auto Show and sold in the U.S. as a 1990 model Pop-up headlights, rounded styling, manually operated soft top
NB 1999–2005 Debuted in 1997 and went on sale as a 1999 model; no regular U.S. 1998 model year Fixed headlights, revised body and interior, glass rear window
NC 2006–2015 Global launch in 2005; all-new U.S. model was the 2006 MX-5 Larger body, 2.0-liter engine, optional power-retractable hardtop
ND 2016–present Unveiled in 2014 and introduced in the U.S. as a 2016 model; current through the 2026 model year at the research date Sharper Kodo design, lightweight Skyactiv platform, soft top or RF roof

The generation labels—NA, NB, NC, and ND—are chassis-generation shorthand widely used by owners and enthusiasts. They are not trim levels. Special editions, body styles, engines, transmissions, and equipment packages can vary substantially within a single generation.

Production dates, registration dates, imported cars, and non-U.S. model-year conventions can make an individual vehicle appear to fall outside this chart. For a specific car, verify the VIN, production date, market, trim, and factory equipment.

NA Miata: 1990–1997

The NA is the original U.S.-market MX-5 Miata and the generation that established the modern Miata formula. Mazda revealed it at the Chicago Auto Show on February 10, 1989, before selling it in the United States as a 1990 model.

Its defining feature is the retractable pop-up headlamp. The NA also has compact, rounded proportions, a manually operated soft top, two seats, a front-mounted four-cylinder engine, and rear-wheel drive. Mazda described the original car as weighing just over 2,000 pounds, helping it deliver the light, responsive character that made it influential well beyond its sales numbers.

NA engines and model-year variation

Early U.S. cars are most closely associated with a 1.6-liter four-cylinder engine. Later NAs used a 1.8-liter engine in many markets and applications. That broad description should not be used as a substitute for checking a particular car: emissions equipment, braking systems, trim content, limited editions, and engine displacement varied during the NA run and between markets.

A generation label also does not prove that a car remains mechanically original. Engine swaps, replacement body panels, aftermarket suspension, special-edition equipment, and imported examples can all complicate identification. The VIN, production date, service records, and inspection are more reliable than appearance alone.

What the NA is best suited to

The NA is the obvious choice for buyers drawn to classic styling, pop-up headlights, restoration, preservation, and the earliest expression of Mazda’s lightweight-roadster concept. It is also the oldest generation, so condition often matters more than the model year.

Inspect an NA carefully for:

  • Rust in the body and underbody, including previous repairs
  • Accident damage or poorly aligned replacement panels
  • Soft-top fabric, frame, seals, and rear-window condition
  • Cooling-system condition and evidence of overheating
  • Worn suspension bushings, ball joints, and other age-related components
  • Oil or fluid leaks, hardened seals, and deteriorated hoses
  • Electrical modifications and non-factory wiring

These are inspection priorities for an old sports car, not claims that every NA has the same defects. A well-maintained example can be a rewarding car; a neglected one can require substantial recommissioning regardless of its trim or color.

For DIY owners, a 1990–2014 Mazda MX-5 Miata repair manual can provide useful coverage for NA, NB, and some NC applications. Match the manual to the exact car before relying on it: it does not automatically cover every 2015 NC, an ND, a Mazdaspeed-specific system, or every market variation, and it is not necessarily a substitute for a factory service manual.

NB Miata: 1999–2005

The NB debuted at the 1997 Tokyo Motor Show and went on sale in the United States as a 1999 model. That timing creates the U.S. model-year gap: the NB was shown in 1997, but there was no regular U.S. 1998 MX-5 Miata model year.

The NB preserves the NA’s basic rear-wheel-drive roadster layout and compact proportions while bringing a more modern body, interior, structure, and equipment set. The most obvious visual change is the move from pop-up headlights to fixed headlights. Mazda also notes a slight power increase and a glass rear window in the convertible top.

NB1, NB2, and special versions

Enthusiasts commonly divide the NB into early NB1 and facelifted NB2 cars. Those terms are useful shorthand when comparing used cars and parts, but they are informal sublabels, not separate Mazda generations. If a listing uses NB1 or NB2, verify the actual model year and equipment rather than assuming that the label is an official trim or chassis designation.

The 2004–2005 Mazdaspeed MX-5 Miata is the standout U.S. performance variant of the NB era. It used turbocharged power and performance-oriented equipment, so it should be evaluated separately from a standard NB. Verify the drivetrain, suspension, differential, wheels, brakes, and other factory equipment through documentation; aftermarket turbo conversions and modified standard cars can resemble performance models.

Mazda also produced an NB-based coupe for Japan. That is an important historical derivative, but it was not a normal U.S. body style. Imported MX-5, Roadster, and Eunos Roadster cars can have different engines, equipment, body configurations, and model-year conventions.

Why choose an NB?

The NB is often the middle ground between the NA’s vintage appearance and the NC’s larger, more modern feel. It retains a relatively simple, analog driving experience while improving everyday usability and refinement. Fixed headlights, a glass rear window, later 1.8-liter VVT applications, six-speed manual availability, limited editions, and the Mazdaspeed model give the NB a broad range of personalities.

When shopping, do not compare a base NB, a later facelift car, and a Mazdaspeed solely by generation. Confirm the exact engine, transmission, differential, suspension, brakes, wheels, and factory packages. As with an NA, rust, accident repair, roof condition, leaks, and maintenance history should carry more weight than a seller’s description.

NC Miata: 2006–2015 U.S. model years

The NC was launched globally at the 2005 Geneva International Motor Show, but the all-new U.S. car was the 2006 MX-5 Miata. For a U.S. model-year guide, the clean range is therefore 2006 through 2015. Mazda’s historical materials sometimes display 2005 alongside the NC, reflecting the global launch and production transition rather than a normal U.S. 2005 model year.

The NC is visibly larger and more modern than the NA and NB. It retains the front-engine, rear-wheel-drive, two-seat roadster layout but brings a newer platform, a 2.0-liter engine, a more spacious-feeling cabin, and a broader equipment set. Mazda’s North American launch material described the all-new car as approximately 150 pounds lighter than the preceding model, while the NC itself used a 2.0-liter MZR-era powertrain rather than the Skyactiv powertrain later introduced with the ND.

Steering-wheel controls were among the premium equipment changes noted for the generation. More importantly for buyers, the NC introduced the Power Retractable Hard Top, usually abbreviated PRHT. The PRHT is a powered hardtop roof option within the NC generation, not a separate generation. It changes the car’s roof operation, packaging, and weight compared with a soft-top NC.

NC model-year buying considerations

The NC is a strong fit for drivers who want more cabin and trunk practicality than an NA or NB without giving up the traditional Miata layout. A soft-top NC and a PRHT NC should be treated as different buying propositions. Check the roof mechanism, seals, drainage paths, and operating function on a PRHT car, and make sure replacement parts or service information match the roof type.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Also verify the exact transmission, suspension package, limited-slip differential, trim, and optional equipment. An NC part recommendation should not be assumed to fit an NA or NB simply because all three cars are called Miatas. Even within the NC range, model year, body style, engine, and equipment can affect compatibility.

For repair research, year coverage is particularly important near the end of the run. One Haynes listing covers MX-5/Miata applications through 2014, while a separate NC-focused listing covers applications from October 2005 through July 2015. That makes it worth checking the publication’s stated coverage before using a manual for a 2015 car.

ND Miata: 2016–present

The ND was unveiled in the United States in September 2014 and entered the U.S. market as a 2016 model. It brought the largest visual and engineering reset since the original car while preserving the essential MX-5 recipe.

Mazda’s 2016 U.S. launch material described the ND as all-new and approximately 150 pounds lighter than the preceding model. In North America, the initial ND used a 2.0-liter Skyactiv-G four-cylinder rated at 155 horsepower and 148 lb-ft of torque. The lower mass and sharper Kodo design gave the fourth-generation car a very different character from the larger NC.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

ND soft top and RF

The standard ND is offered with a conventional soft top. The MX-5 Miata RF arrived for the 2017 model year and added a retractable-fastback hardtop design. With the roof closed, the RF has a fastback-like appearance; with the roof retracted, it retains an open-air driving experience.

The RF is a body and roof variant within the ND generation, not a fifth generation. When comparing an ND soft top with an RF, consider roof operation, visibility, weight, storage, price, and the condition of the roof mechanism. Do not mix RF-specific and soft-top parts without confirming fitment.

The 2019 ND power increase

The 2019 model year brought a major U.S. powertrain milestone. Mazda’s U.S. press material lists the revised engine at 181 horsepower, 151 lb-ft of torque, and a 7,500-rpm redline, up from the 155-hp specification used at the beginning of the U.S. ND run.

The same period brought equipment and package revisions, including a tilt-and-telescoping steering column, rearview-camera availability, revised safety-package content, and optional Brembo, BBS, and Recaro equipment on applicable trims. These features should be checked by model year and package; they should not be generalized to every ND.

What is new for the 2026 U.S. Miata?

At the research date of August 12, 2026, the current U.S. model year is 2026. The 2026 MX-5 continues with a 2.0-liter Skyactiv-G four-cylinder producing 181 hp at 7,000 rpm and 151 lb-ft at 4,000 rpm, with a 7,500-rpm redline.

A six-speed manual remains standard. The Sport and Club trims are manual-only, while the Grand Touring offers an available six-speed automatic with steering-wheel-mounted paddle shifters. Mazda’s current U.S. lineup presents Sport, Club, and Grand Touring soft-top trims, with the RF as the electronically operated retractable-fastback-roof alternative.

Current safety and infotainment equipment should be treated as 2026-specific. A used 2016, 2019, or 2022 ND may have different standard equipment, available packages, driver-assistance features, or infotainment hardware even though it belongs to the same generation.

How to identify a Miata generation quickly

  1. Look for pop-up headlights. If the car has factory-style retractable headlights, it is an NA unless it has been modified or fitted with replacement bodywork.
  2. Check for fixed headlights and compact pre-NC proportions. That usually points to an NB, but confirm the model year because body modifications and imported cars can confuse visual identification.
  3. Look for the larger NC body and optional powered hardtop. A PRHT roof identifies an NC roof variant, not a separate generation.
  4. Look for ND styling and the RF roof. An RF is an ND fastback-style retractable-hardtop variant, introduced for 2017.
  5. Verify the VIN and build information. Appearance is only a first step. The VIN, production date, engine, transmission, roof type, trim, and market determine the correct parts and specifications.

Which Miata generation should you buy?

Choose an NA if you want the classic experience

The NA is the choice for pop-up headlights, the earliest styling, and restoration or preservation appeal. Budget for age-related maintenance and prioritize rust-free structure, sound cooling systems, and complete service records over a low purchase price.

Choose an NB for a more refined classic Miata

The NB keeps much of the original car’s compact, direct character while adding fixed headlights, a glass rear window, improved refinement, and more performance-oriented variants. Separate ordinary NBs from Mazdaspeed cars and verify the car’s equipment rather than relying on badges.

Choose an NC for space and a traditional roadster feel

The NC is the logical choice when an NA or NB feels too old or cramped. It offers a larger, more modern platform and the unique PRHT option. Compare soft-top and PRHT examples carefully, especially if long-term roof maintenance and parts availability are important to you.

Choose an ND for the newest lightweight platform

The ND offers the newest design and engineering, a 2.0-liter Skyactiv-G engine, and a choice between soft top and RF body styles. If performance is a priority, distinguish the initial 155-hp U.S. cars from the 181-hp cars beginning in 2019. If convenience is more important, check the trim and transmission because the current 2026 automatic is not offered across the range.

Parts, manuals, and research: avoid generation mix-ups

The phrase “Miata part” is not specific enough for many repairs. Before ordering anything, record the generation, U.S. model year, engine, transmission, roof type, trim, differential, and market. An NA brake or suspension recommendation may not fit an NB; an NC PRHT component is not interchangeable with an ND RF component simply because both cars have retractable roof hardware.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Repair references are especially valuable for older cars, but coverage must be read literally. A 1990–2014 manual can be useful for NA, NB, and earlier NC work, while an NC-focused manual may cover October 2005 through July 2015. Neither statement should be stretched to imply complete ND coverage or complete coverage of every turbocharged, special-edition, imported, or market-specific car.

Readers comparing generations or restoring an older example may also find Mazda MX-5 Miata history and restoration books useful for period-correct details, generation identification, and background on NA, NB, and NC cars. These books are research aids, not substitutes for the VIN, official specifications, or a professional inspection. Inventory and listing status can change, so verify the current edition and coverage before purchasing.

Common mistakes when researching Miata model years

  • Calling 1998 an NB U.S. model year: the NB debuted in 1997 but went on sale in the United States as a 1999 model.
  • Calling the NC a 2005 U.S. model: 2005 is the global launch and transition date; the normal U.S. model year is 2006.
  • Calling the RF a fifth generation: the RF is an ND roof/body variant introduced for 2017.
  • Applying 2019-and-later ND horsepower to every ND: early U.S. NDs used the 155-hp specification, while the 181-hp version arrived for 2019.
  • Treating NB1 and NB2 as official generations: they are enthusiast shorthand for early and facelifted NB cars.
  • Assuming a generation has one specification: engines, transmissions, brakes, differentials, suspension, trims, safety features, and roof systems can vary within a generation.
  • Assuming an imported car follows U.S. rules: MX-5, Roadster, and Eunos Roadster cars from other markets may have different engines, equipment, body styles, and model-year conventions.
  • Buying parts by appearance: confirm compatibility by VIN, year, engine, transmission, trim, roof type, and market.

Scope note: The year ranges and specifications in this guide synthesize Mazda’s official generation history, U.S. launch material, current 2026 U.S. model information, and the cited repair-reference listings available at the research date. Current equipment and availability can change by market and model year.

Frequently Asked Questions

Was there a 1998 Mazda Miata in the United States?

There was no regular U.S. 1998 MX-5 Miata model year in the generation sequence. The NA ends with 1997, and the NB begins as a 1999 U.S. model. Imported cars and non-U.S. registration conventions can produce different descriptions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is the 2005 Miata an NC or an NB?

For U.S. model-year purposes, 2005 is an NB and 2006 is the first normal U.S. NC model year. The NC launched globally in 2005, which is why some Mazda historical material associates 2005 with the NC.

Is the Miata RF a separate generation?

No. The RF is a retractable-fastback roof variant of the fourth-generation ND Miata. It arrived as a 2017 model year.

What is the difference between an NB1 and NB2 Miata?

NB1 and NB2 are informal enthusiast terms for earlier and facelifted NB cars. They are not separate Mazda generations, and exact equipment should be verified by model year, trim, VIN, and production date.

Which Miata generation has pop-up headlights?

The NA, sold in the United States from 1990 through 1997, is the factory Miata generation most associated with pop-up headlights. Modified cars and replacement bodywork can make visual identification less certain.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Bottom Line

The U.S. Miata timeline is NA 1990–1997, no regular 1998 model year, NB 1999–2005, NC 2006–2015, and ND 2016–present. Use the generation as a starting point, not as a complete specification: roof type, engine, transmission, trim, market, and model year determine what a particular car has and which parts or manuals fit it.
