Mazda is developing a next-generation BT-50 midsize pickup, according to an October 2026 report by Carscoops citing an interview with Mazda Australia managing director Vinesh Bhindi. The report says the truck could arrive around 2028, but that timing is an estimate—not a confirmed launch date. Mazda has not announced the future model’s specifications, development partner or sales markets.
What Mazda has confirmed—and what is reported
The clearest current indication comes from Carscoops, which attributes the development confirmation to Bhindi in an interview with CarsGuide. The report describes the vehicle as the next-generation BT-50 and puts its likely arrival around 2028. It does not identify a firm release date or provide technical details.
That report is a stronger signal than Mazda CEO Masahiro Moro’s comments in an April 2025 interview with Car and Driver. At that time, Moro said Mazda did not have a pickup platform and could work with another automaker to obtain one. He was discussing possible future products, not announcing this particular BT-50.
Why a partner may matter
Mazda’s current-generation BT-50, unveiled in 2020, is supplied by Isuzu Motor Limited on an OEM basis, Mazda said at the time. That establishes the arrangement for the existing generation only; it does not confirm who will build or supply the next one.

Moro’s 2025 comments help explain the challenge: Mazda said it lacked its own pickup platform and could work with another OEM. Carscoops discusses Isuzu and Changan as possibilities, but neither has been confirmed as the next BT-50’s partner. The platform, manufacturing location and development arrangement remain unknown.
What is known about the current BT-50
Specifications published for the current Australian-market truck should not be read as specifications for the vehicle in development. Mazda Australia’s January 2025 update describes single-, freestyle- and dual-cab versions with diesel engines. Mazda has not said whether those configurations or powertrains will carry over.

For context, Mazda’s 2020 launch announcement gave a maximum payload of 1,065 kg, towing capacity of 3,500 kg, output of 140 kW (190 PS) and torque of 450 N·m for a particular Australian-spec double-cab 4×4 automatic. Those figures apply to that stated configuration of the existing generation, not to the next pickup.
Mazda Australia also said it had developed and tested more than 100 accessories for Australian conditions for the updated BT-50. That does not establish that those accessories will fit a next-generation model.

Will the new BT-50 come to the United States?
There is no confirmed U.S. or broader North American launch. Mazda’s 2020 description of the current BT-50 identified Oceania, ASEAN, Central and South America, the Middle East, and Africa as its main markets. That market list describes the existing truck and does not settle where its successor will be sold.

- Design, cab and bed configurations, and trim levels.
- Platform, manufacturing location and OEM partner.
- Engine, hybrid or other electrification options, and drivetrain.
- Payload, towing, safety equipment, pricing and warranty.
- Which countries or regions will receive the new model.
Any renderings or predictions about equipment and powertrains should therefore be treated as speculation, not as Mazda-confirmed details. The next useful comparison will depend on Mazda announcing market-specific specifications; current BT-50 figures cannot establish how the future truck will compare with rival pickups.
