What changed for the 2024 CX-5?
For 2024, Mazda added touchscreen functionality to Apple CarPlay and Android Auto across the U.S. CX-5 lineup. Every 2024 CX-5 used a 10.25-inch Mazda Connect display, and Mazda described the display as integrated with CarPlay and Android Auto with touchscreen functionality.

This was an interface change rather than the introduction of smartphone projection itself. CarPlay and Android Auto were already available in the CX-5. The meaningful update was that drivers and passengers could directly tap compatible controls on the projection screen instead of relying exclusively on the commander knob.

- From 2024: CarPlay and Android Auto could also be operated by touching the 10.25-inch display.
- Still present: The commander knob, steering-wheel controls, and voice input were not removed.
Direct touch can be convenient for selecting a destination, changing a media screen, choosing an app, or interacting with another compatible projection control. It does not mean every Mazda function must be controlled by touch, and it does not establish that touch operation is always safer or faster. Mazda continues to direct drivers to make infotainment adjustments only when it is safe and appropriate.
Why the commander knob still matters
The touchscreen addition did not turn the CX-5 into a touchscreen-only vehicle. The physical commander knob remains useful for navigating Mazda Connect, and it gives the driver an alternative to reaching toward the display. Steering-wheel buttons and voice controls are also still relevant, particularly for navigation, calls, messages, and media functions.
In practical terms, the 2024 and 2025 CX-5 give occupants a choice: use the control method that suits the task and driving situation. A passenger may prefer tapping the display, while the driver may choose the knob, a steering-wheel control, or voice input.
Was wireless CarPlay and Android Auto standard?
Not necessarily. Mazda announced wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto as part of the 2024 CX-5 equipment story, but its U.S. information places wireless connectivity in specific equipment or package descriptions rather than clearly stating that every trim was wireless. The safe conclusion is that wireless availability must be checked by trim and equipment level.

The same qualification applies to the 2025 CX-5. Mazda retained the 10.25-inch display, commander-knob control, and touchscreen functionality, while wireless phone projection was associated with specified trims, including Carbon Edition and Turbo models. A listing that says a CX-5 supports CarPlay or Android Auto does not, by itself, prove that the connection is wireless.

What is different about the 2026 CX-5?
The 2026 CX-5 should not be described simply as a continuation of the 2024 touchscreen update. It is an all-new model with a substantially revised infotainment environment.

Therefore, “the 2026 CX-5 supports CarPlay and Android Auto” should not be rewritten as “every 2026 CX-5 has wireless CarPlay and Android Auto.” Check the exact vehicle’s window sticker, specifications, or owner’s documentation.
Can an older CX-5 be upgraded?
Sometimes, but the answer depends on the model year, market, Mazda Connect hardware, software, and USB equipment already installed. Older CX-5 owners should not assume that the 2024 touchscreen feature can be enabled with a software download.
Apple CarPlay and Android Auto generally require compatible Mazda Connect hardware and connection through the designated USB terminal. Before ordering a retrofit
- Identify the CX-5’s model year, trim, and market.
- Check whether the vehicle already has factory CarPlay or Android Auto.
- Verify the installed Mazda Connect version and USB hub.
- Confirm that the proposed hub and cable kit is listed for that exact application.
- Check whether installation requires trim removal, software configuration, or dealer-level procedures.
A Mazda CX-5 CarPlay retrofit kit may be relevant to selected older vehicles, but treat it as a model-year-specific hardware project rather than a universal accessory. An OEM-style hub may still require the correct cable, compatible Mazda Connect hardware, and installation. A wireless adapter solves a different problem from Mazda’s touchscreen update. It can remove the need to plug in a phone each time, but it cannot create CarPlay, Android Auto, or touchscreen functionality in a vehicle that does not already have the underlying compatible wired system.
If your CX-5 already launches wired CarPlay or Android Auto through its USB connection, a wireless CarPlay and Android Auto adapter may be worth considering. Check your CX-5 compatibility before buying: adapter requirements differ, some support only one projection platform, and third-party compatibility is not guaranteed for every Mazda Connect version or trim. This is a convenience accessory, not a way to convert an older, incompatible CX-5 into a 2024-style touchscreen system.
If wired projection is unreliable
Before blaming the vehicle, check the basics:
- Use the Mazda-designated USB terminal rather than a charge-only port.
- Try a known-good USB data cable for Apple CarPlay and Android Auto; a cable that charges a phone may not reliably carry data.
- Confirm that the phone is unlocked during initial setup and that CarPlay or Android Auto permissions have been accepted.
- Restart the phone and Mazda Connect if the projection screen does not appear.

A replacement cable may fix a connection problem, but it cannot add the required Mazda hardware. Likewise, an adapter cannot compensate for a missing USB hub or a CX-5 that never supported wired projection.

The more important questions are whether the particular vehicle has wireless connectivity and which other equipment comes with its trim.
If you are considering a 2026 CX-5, evaluate it as a new infotainment system rather than merely a larger version of the 2024 setup. The larger standard screen, optional 15.6-inch display, Google built-in, and revised Mazda Connect interface are major changes. Verify whether the trim uses wired or wireless phone projection.
If you own an older CX-5, first determine what the vehicle already supports. Factory compatibility and USB hardware matter more than the phone model or the purchase of a generic wireless accessory.
