For most 2023 buyers, gray or white was the lowest-regret choice; blue offered the best balance of personality and availability; and black delivered the most dramatic look. But there was no universally best car color. The right answer depended on whether you prioritized mainstream appeal, maintenance, resale, visibility, or standing out.
The best car color in 2023 depended on what you wanted from the vehicle. White, gray, black, and silver were the dominant production colors worldwide. Blue was the strongest mainstream choice for adding personality, while red, green, orange, and yellow offered more distinctive alternatives. For most buyers, gray or white was the lowest-regret choice, blue offered the best balance of individuality and availability, and black delivered the most dramatic appearance.

There was no objectively “best” color for every car. Resale, maintenance, visibility, vehicle shape, paint finish, local demand, and personal taste can all matter more than the broad color family. The exact shade is important, too: a pale metallic gray, charcoal gray, blue-gray, and warm greige may all be listed simply as “gray,” but they create very different results.

| Color | Best for | 2023 buyer takeaway |
|---|---|---|
| White | Conventional appeal | The leading color in both major global reports, though it can show road film and dirt. |
| Gray | A modern neutral | Axalta ranked gray second globally and ahead of black. |
| Black | Drama and formality | A high-contrast appearance that makes dust, water spots, and fine scratches conspicuous. |
| Blue | Mainstream personality | The leading widely available chromatic color in both reports. |
| Red | High-energy styling | Expressive without being as unusual as yellow, orange, or some greens. |
| Green | Distinctiveness | A relatively uncommon choice with growing appeal in selected vehicle segments. |
| Orange | Maximum attention | Uncommon and highly noticeable; availability depends heavily on the model. |
| Yellow | A niche statement | Rare in production, but not necessarily poor for resale in every market. |
What the major 2023 color reports actually found
Two major automotive paint suppliers published global color data based on 2023 vehicle production or build information. Their percentages differ, but they tell a consistent story: achromatic colors—white, gray, black, and silver—dominated the market.

BASF: white remained number one
BASF’s Color Report 2023, based on automotive production and coating-application data for light passenger vehicles, listed the following global distribution:
- White: 36%
- Black: 21%
- Gray: 15%
- Silver: 9%
- Blue: 8%
- Red: 4%
- Green: 2%
- Other smaller categories: approximately 1% each
BASF’s interpretation was that black gained share primarily from white, while the overall proportion of chromatic colors remained comparatively stable. In practical terms, white was still the strongest conventional choice in this dataset, but black and contemporary gray were also important parts of the 2023 market.
Axalta: gray moved ahead of black
Axalta’s 71st Global Automotive Color Popularity Report, based on 2023 automotive build data, reported:
- White: 31%
- Gray: 22%
- Black: 18%
- Silver: 10%
- Blue: 7%
- Red: 4%
- Brown/beige: 3%
- Green: 2%
- Yellow/gold: 1%
Axalta specifically reported that gray surpassed black as the world’s second-most-popular automotive color in 2023.
These reports should not be treated as competing censuses of every car on the road. The companies use different datasets, category definitions, and reporting methods. That explains why BASF placed black at 21% and gray at 15%, while Axalta placed gray at 22% and black at 18%. The durable conclusion is not the precise ranking of gray versus black; it is that neutral colors were overwhelmingly more common than expressive colors.
The best car color by buyer goal
1. White: the best conventional choice
White is the most defensible recommendation for a buyer who wants a widely supported, conventional color. It ranked first in both the BASF and Axalta global 2023 reports, at 36% and 31%, respectively.
White also works across many vehicle types and usually gives a car a clean, uncomplicated appearance. But “white” is not one universal finish. Solid white, metallic white, pearl white, and tri-coat white can differ substantially in appearance and repair complexity. A pearlescent or tri-coat finish may require more involved color matching than a simple solid paint.

2. Gray: the best contemporary neutral
Gray was arguably the most interesting neutral trend of 2023. Axalta placed it second globally, ahead of black, and gray can look more current or sophisticated than a plain white vehicle without demanding the same visual upkeep as a deep black finish.
The range is enormous. Light silver-gray can look understated and almost metallic-white; charcoal can appear nearly black; blue-gray adds cool color; and warm gray or greige can soften a vehicle’s appearance. Metallic, gloss, satin, and matte finishes can make nominally similar shades look like entirely different colors.
Choose gray if you want a modern neutral that balances individuality, availability, and everyday usability. Inspect the actual vehicle or a physical sample before ordering, particularly if the model is offered in several similar gray shades.

3. Black: the best dramatic neutral
Black creates a formal, high-contrast appearance. It can make a vehicle’s trim, grille, glass, and body lines look especially deliberate, which is why it remains a strong choice for luxury cars, performance models, SUVs, and trucks.
BASF recorded black at 21% globally in 2023, while Axalta recorded 18%. Black therefore remained one of the three leading global colors even though Axalta found gray had overtaken it.
The tradeoff is visual maintenance. Dust, water spotting, and fine scratches tend to stand out more against a dark, glossy surface. That does not make black a bad choice, but it does make the finish less forgiving if the vehicle is frequently parked outdoors or if keeping a flawless appearance is a priority.
4. Blue: the best mainstream expressive color
Blue was the leading widely available chromatic color in both 2023 datasets: 8% in BASF’s report and 7% in Axalta’s. It gives a vehicle more personality than a neutral while remaining less niche than many yellow, orange, green, or violet options.

Blue also captured the period’s design direction. Axalta selected Techno Blue as its 2023 Global Automotive Color of the Year, describing it as an ultramodern blue with hue-shifting effects intended to create movement and excitement across vehicle types.

- Tiny rust causes substantial damage: SYOAUTO touch up paint for cars can seal away the scratch to prevent future rust. If you have a black vehicle, this product will save you a lot of heartaches. We know ugly white chip will mark drive you crazy. This black car touch up paint is suitable only for black cars that have not faded. If the car paint has slightly faded, it may result in a mismatch or a shadowing effect
- The daily drive gets rock chips and scratches: Rock chips on the bumper, road rash on rims, the front and passenger side all get many scratches. You will prefer SYOAUTO black car touch up paint to the white dings in your black paint. If the car paint pen has been opened and the cap was not tightened properly, it can evaporate and dry out. Ensure the cap is tightly closed after use
- Quick and easy scratch fix: This automotive touchup paint is easy to use. Just clean and degrease the surface, shake it for about 2 minutes to really mix it well. The pen works well for small chips, the brush can cover larger dings. It will dry within 10 minutes. Due to the properties of car paint, it needs to be thin and evenly flowing. When using it, it is necessary to patiently apply a few layers in order to achieve a good repair effect
- Apply advice: You can practice on some scrap metal or cardboard, to master steadying your hand and allow the correct amount of paint you need to be applied. No rush, take your time, will find this is the economical way to stop the metal from rust. Note: The black paint has a glossy finish, not a matte finish
- About the color match: The black auto touch up paint is pure gray, which can match 90% black cars. If the black car paint scratch repair can't work well for your car, just reach us, we will take our responsibility
Techno Blue was a design and trend signal—not proof that it was the most-produced retail color. The practical lesson is to consider blue broadly. Navy, medium metallic blue, electric blue, steel blue, and blue-gray can all produce different levels of attention. A restrained metallic blue may be easy to live with, while a vivid or color-shifting finish is more of a statement.
5. Red: the best high-energy classic
Red accounted for about 4% of global production in both BASF’s and Axalta’s 2023 reports. It is much less common than white, gray, black, or silver, but it remains familiar enough to avoid feeling extremely niche.
Red can emphasize the shape of a coupe, sports car, hatchback, or performance SUV, but the shade matters. Deep burgundy, solid bright red, metallic ruby, and orange-red do not communicate the same style. Compare the color in direct sun and shade before committing.

Those are common anecdotes, not conclusions established by these reports.
6. Green: the best natural or distinctive choice
Green remained uncommon, at 2% in both major 2023 reports, which gives it an immediate advantage for buyers who want something less ordinary. Depending on the shade, green can look rugged, outdoors-oriented, luxurious, retro, or highly modern.
Dark forest green may suit a traditional SUV or luxury sedan, while bright or pastel green creates a more conspicuous style statement. Because availability is limited to particular models and trims, check whether the color is factory paint, a special-order option, or an aftermarket wrap.
7. Orange: the best attention-getting color
Orange was a small production category in the 2023 global reports, making it one of the clearest ways to stand apart from the neutral-color majority. It can work particularly well on sporty cars, off-road vehicles, and compact cars with bold styling.
The downside is selection. Orange may be available only on a specific trim, model year, or special edition. Before choosing it, look at comparable used listings in your region rather than assuming the color will be easy to replace later.

8. Yellow: the best niche statement
Yellow or yellow/gold represented about 1% of Axalta’s 2023 global data, while BASF placed yellow among categories of approximately 1%. It is uncommon, conspicuous, and highly dependent on the vehicle’s design.
Yellow is not automatically a poor financial decision. In a later iSeeCars analysis of more than 1.2 million three-year-old used cars, yellow, orange, and green vehicles showed lower average depreciation than white, black, and gold vehicles in that sample. That finding is useful context, not a guarantee: vehicle segment, mileage, condition, equipment, powertrain, location, and buyer demand can matter more than paint color.
Do neutral colors really have the best resale value?
Not necessarily. The familiar advice to choose white, black, gray, or silver for resale is understandable because neutral cars are common and easy for dealers and buyers to find. But common does not mean every neutral vehicle will retain the most value.
The iSeeCars analysis cited above reported average three-year depreciation of:
- All vehicles in the sample: 31.0%
- Yellow: 24.0%
- Orange: 24.4%
- Green: 26.3%
- White: 32.1%
- Black: 31.9%
A reasonable explanation is supply and demand: unusual colors may attract more buyers than the available inventory can satisfy in particular segments. That is an inference from the results, not a universal rule. A rare color on an undesirable trim may still be difficult to sell, while a popular neutral on a sought-after vehicle may perform very well.
Neutral colors are usually easier to find and may feel safer to buyers, but large used-car datasets do not prove that neutrals always retain the most value. If resale is your priority, compare actual listings for the make, model, trim, drivetrain, and body style you are considering.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Can car color affect safety?
Color can affect conspicuity, but it should never be used as a substitute for active or passive safety equipment. A Transportation Research Board record summarizing earlier research found that color-related crash associations were strongest during daylight, with some colors showing relative risks up to roughly 10% above white. The evidence is observational and older, so it does not establish one universally safest paint color for modern vehicles.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesVisibility depends on more than paint. Vehicle size, headlights and taillights, road conditions, weather, contrast with the surroundings, traffic, driver behavior, and available driver-assistance systems all matter. Safe driving practices and properly functioning safety equipment are more important purchasing considerations than choosing one paint color over another.

How to choose the right shade before buying
- Start with a physical reference. Online configurators and compressed photos are useful for narrowing the field, but they cannot reliably reproduce every metallic, pearl, satin, or color-shifting effect. Automotive paint suppliers document the use of color chips, samples, fan decks, and matching systems. A physical automotive paint color fan deck or set of car paint color sample cards can help you compare hues under controlled conditions. It is a reference tool, not a guarantee that a generic sample matches a particular vehicle’s factory paint.
- View the color in several kinds of light. Check direct sunlight, shade, overcast conditions, and indoor lighting. Metallic and pearl finishes may change noticeably with viewing angle and illumination.
- Look at the complete vehicle. Roof color, wheels, exterior trim, grille, glass, lights, and body shape all change how a hue reads. A swatch that looks attractive by itself may appear too bright or too subdued once placed beside black trim or chrome.
- Identify the finish. Ask whether the paint is solid, metallic, pearl, tri-coat, matte, or satin. Finish affects not only the appearance but also repair and refinishing complexity.
- Check the exact factory paint code. Paint names are not standardized. The same broad color name can refer to different formulas, and one vehicle color can have multiple names or variants. Record the OEM paint code from the vehicle or manufacturer documentation before buying touch-up paint or arranging a repair.
- Do not buy generic touch-up paint by color name alone. “Blue,” “red,” and “white” are not exact specifications. Match by make, model, year, and OEM paint code, then confirm whether the vehicle has a multi-stage finish.
- Test a wrap separately from a repaint. If you want a bold or color-shifting appearance but do not want permanent paint, compare actual vehicle-wrap film swatches and consult a trained installer. A wrap is a separate solution from factory paint and can have its own requirements, limitations, and care instructions.
Paint, wrap, or a different factory color?
If the color is available from the manufacturer, factory paint is usually the simplest route because the vehicle’s panels, door jambs, and trim are designed around that specification. An aftermarket repaint can produce an excellent result, but it requires careful preparation, color matching, and attention to areas that may remain in the original color.
A wrap can be useful for experimenting with a vivid blue, orange, green, or color-shifting finish. 3M’s vehicle-wrap resources describe film color options and direct consumers toward trained installers and Pro Shop Dealers. Treat a wrap as a customization choice rather than evidence that the underlying factory color has changed; inspect the installer’s work, ask about film care and panel edges, and compare physical swatches before booking.
Final recommendations for 2023 buyers
- Choose white if you want the most conventional global-market choice.
- Choose gray if you want a current-looking neutral with less visual intensity than black.
- Choose black if dramatic styling matters more than hiding dust and fine marks.
- Choose blue for the strongest balance of personality and mainstream availability.
- Choose red for a familiar, energetic statement.
- Choose green, orange, or yellow if standing out matters more than matching the largest part of the market.
The most useful rule is to judge the exact shade and finish, not merely the color name. See a physical sample, compare the vehicle in different lighting, inspect how the paint works with the car’s trim and wheels, and save the OEM paint code before buying any repair product.
Frequently Asked Questions
What was the best car color in 2023?
There was no single best car color for every buyer in 2023. White and gray were the strongest conventional choices, blue was the best mainstream expressive color, black was best for a dramatic appearance, and green, orange, or yellow suited buyers who wanted something rare.
What was the most popular non-neutral car color in 2023?
Blue was the leading widely available chromatic color in both cited 2023 reports: BASF listed blue at 8% of global production and Axalta listed it at 7%.
Which car colors hold their value best?
No. An iSeeCars analysis of more than 1.2 million three-year-old used cars found lower average depreciation for yellow, orange, and green than for white and black in its sample. Results vary by model, trim, condition, mileage, location, and demand.
Which car color is easiest to keep clean?
Not reliably. Dark paint can make dust, water spots, and fine scratches more noticeable, while white can still show road film, mud, and dark contamination. The exact paint finish and how the vehicle is used matter.
How do I match car touch-up paint?
Use the vehicle’s make, model, year, and OEM paint code. Broad names such as “blue” or “white” are not precise formulas, and some factory colors use metallic, pearl, or multi-stage finishes.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: White and gray were the safest mainstream recommendations for 2023, blue was the best widely available expressive choice, and black remained the strongest dramatic neutral. Green, orange, and yellow were more distinctive and were not automatically worse for resale. Whatever color you choose, verify the exact shade and finish with physical samples and record the OEM paint code.
