The detail is part of a broader set of announcements about the third-generation SUV, unveiled in July 2025—but Mazda has not yet published the hybrid’s price, fuel economy, output, battery details, or full market availability.
What Mazda has confirmed about the CX-5 hybrid
Mazda’s corporate plan calls for its SKYACTIV-Z engine to be paired with Mazda’s unique hybrid system in the next-generation CX-5 by the end of 2027. Mazda described this as a planned introduction, not a completed vehicle specification or a guarantee of retail availability in every market. Mazda’s 2025 Multi-Solution Briefing sets out the corporate timeline, while its global announcement of the all-new CX-5 also says the combination is due by the end of 2027.
The new CX-5’s development concept is “New Generation Emotional Daily Comfort,” Mazda’s description of the vehicle’s design and development aims. The July 2025 reveal established the new generation and the broad powertrain plan; it did not supply a complete technical sheet for the future hybrid.
How the U.S. launch engine differs from the planned hybrid
Mazda North American Operations announced the U.S. launch model as the 2026 CX-5, with a 2.5-liter Skyactiv-G four-cylinder rated at 187 horsepower and 185 lb-ft of torque. Those figures apply to the announced launch engine, not the later hybrid. Mazda USA said a new Mazda-family hybrid powertrain would follow in 2027. Mazda’s U.S. announcement does not provide the hybrid’s output or other final specifications.

Do not confuse Mazda M Hybrid with the planned 2027 system
Mazda also announced a 2.5-liter petrol configuration with 24V Mazda M Hybrid for Europe, Japan, and other markets. Mazda UK described that technology with the regional launch configuration and anticipated the new CX-5’s UK arrival from summer 2026. These regional launch details are distinct from Mazda’s later plan for SKYACTIV-Z combined with its unique hybrid system in the CX-5 by the end of 2027. The announcements do not establish that the systems are the same, or that a given regional version will receive the same lineup or timing as another.
For a U.S. buyer, the 187-hp figure belongs to the announced 2026 launch engine. For UK buyers, Mazda’s stated configuration includes 24V Mazda M Hybrid. Neither statement supplies specifications for the future SKYACTIV-Z hybrid. Mazda UK’s announcement covers the UK timing and configuration; Mazda’s global release describes the broader regional M Hybrid offering.

Mazda’s cited announcements do not establish the planned hybrid’s final retail price, fuel economy, power output, battery capacity or chemistry, trim availability, or complete country-by-country launch schedule. The end-of-2027 date is Mazda’s corporate plan, not confirmation that every market will receive the vehicle on that date.
When Mazda releases market-specific specifications, useful comparisons with other SUVs will need to match region and powertrain: distinguish a mild-hybrid launch configuration from the later planned hybrid, and compare confirmed availability, output, fuel economy, price, equipment, warranty, and safety information on a like-for-like basis.
