Mazda’s “B-Series” name covers more than one truck story. In Japan, the Bongo began in 1966 as a compact cab-over commercial vehicle offered as a truck, van and coach. In North America, Mazda sold B-Series compact pickups such as the B2300, B3000 and B4000. Their shared badge does not make them one continuous global model line: the market, model year and vehicle layout matter.
Why “Mazda B-Series” needs a market and year
The clearest way to understand the name is to separate Mazda’s Japanese Bongo history from its North American pickup catalog. The Bongo was a cab-over, one-box commercial vehicle designed around cargo space and maneuverability. North American B-Series models were compact pickups with distinct cab, engine and drivetrain combinations.
Mazda’s sources establish important milestones for each story, but not a complete worldwide chronology. They also do not establish the full timeline of the North American trucks’ relationship with the Ford Ranger. A Bongo generation should therefore not be treated as the direct counterpart of a B2300, B3000 or B4000 simply because all carry a Mazda truck name.
The Bongo in Japan: Mazda’s early commercial workhorse
1966: a rear-engine truck, van and coach
Mazda says the first Bongo appeared in 1966 with a rear-mounted, water-cooled 800cc engine. It was sold in truck, van and coach forms. Mazda’s account emphasizes the low floor and cab-over, one-box layout, which made cargo space and maneuverability central to the design. Mazda’s Bongo heritage history

1977: the low-floor Wide-Low
The second-generation Bongo went on sale in 1977. Mazda highlights its small-diameter double wheels and low, flat floor; the company describes the Bongo Wide-Low as the first truck of its type to use that floor arrangement. Mazda’s heritage page also reports sales of 5,000 units a month in Japan. The page does not state the year for that sales figure, so it should be read as Mazda’s historical account—not as an independently audited figure or a claim about worldwide or annual sales. Mazda’s Bongo heritage history
1983: broader capacity and more variants
Mazda dates the third-generation Bongo to 1983, the same year it introduced the long-wheelbase Bongo Brawny. The company describes the generation as offering 1–1.5-ton capacity and multiple variants, with a 16-year model lifetime. During that period Mazda added 4WD and automatic options, introduced the electric-powered Bongo EV, and began supplying Bongo trucks and vans as original-equipment vehicles. These details describe the Japanese Bongo line, not North American B-Series pickup specifications. Mazda’s Bongo heritage history

1999: a fourth-generation cab-over van and truck
Mazda’s corporate history records the fourth-generation Bongo van and truck arriving in 1999. It lists a cab-over body, a newly developed impact-absorbing frame, standard load-sensing proportioning valves, a 1.8-liter gasoline engine and a 2.2-liter diesel engine. Mazda describes the layout this way: “Its cab-over body type realized excellent cargo space and maneuverability.” These are Mazda’s stated facts for that 1999 Bongo, not specifications for North American B-Series pickups. 2005: a varied lineup
Mazda USA’s 2005 release lists the B2300 Regular Cab, B3000 Regular Cab Dual Sport, four-door B3000 Cab Plus variants and B4000 Cab Plus 4×4 configurations. Mazda called the four-door B3000 Cab Plus a new model for 2005. The range shows why a badge alone is not enough to identify a truck’s body or equipment. Mazda USA’s 2005 B-Series announcement

Mazda also documented North American interior and trim updates for 2004, including a revised steering wheel, airbag cover and center stack, as well as changed seat materials. Those changes illustrate continued updates to the pickup while its compact-truck role remained recognizable. Mazda USA’s 2004 B-Series announcement
2009: engine and drivetrain were tied to cab choice
For the 2009 North American lineup, Mazda described a two-door Regular Cab and a four-door, four-seat Cab Plus, with a 2.3-liter four-cylinder or 4.0-liter V6 and two- or four-wheel drive. The Regular Cab was offered only with the 2.3-liter engine; 4×4 was limited to Cab Plus models equipped with the 4.0-liter engine. These are specific 2009 lineup details, not universal rules for every B-Series model year. Mazda USA’s 2009 B-Series announcement

Mazda advertised towing capacity of up to 5,600 pounds in its 2008 B-Series release. That is a manufacturer claim for the lineup, not a rating that applies to every engine, cab, drivetrain or model year. Check the specific truck’s documentation and rating before towing. Mazda’s January 2018 recall announcement describes 2006 B-Series trucks as “similar in manufacture and build to the Ford Ranger.” That supports a connection for that North American model year. It does not, by itself, document the full platform history, when the relationship began, or how it applies to every B-Series truck worldwide. Mazda’s 2018 B-Series recall announcement

For a meaningful comparison between a Mazda pickup and a Ranger—or between a North American pickup and a Japanese Bongo—compare the same model year and identify the market, body layout, cab and cargo configuration, engine, drivetrain and stated use. Treating “B-Series” as one specification obscures more than it explains.
What owners should check today
Check recall status by VIN
In January 2018, Mazda announced two Takata frontal-airbag inflator recalls involving B-Series trucks. The release included a stop-drive notification for the affected driver-side inflator campaign and reported approximately 160 affected B-Series trucks at that time. That is a figure from the 2018 announcement, not a current count of unrepaired vehicles. An owner or prospective buyer should check the vehicle’s VIN through current official recall resources; the announcement does not establish any individual truck’s status. Mazda’s recall announcement
Match the manual to the exact truck
Mazda hosts an official 2005 B-Series Truck owner’s manual covering operation, loading, towing and maintenance specifications. Use it for a 2005 truck where applicable, not as a substitute for the manual and ratings of a different year or configuration. When checking parts or service information, identify the model year, engine, drivetrain, cab and market first; the historical sources do not establish comprehensive present-day parts fitment or availability.
