What is the Maxus RG20?
Also called 旅行家G20, the RG20 combines the everyday layout of an MPV with built-in camper features. SAIC described the concept as an “MPV-plus” vehicle. It debuted and opened for preorder at the 2020 Beijing Auto Show, using the MAXUS G20 as its base. That makes the California comparison useful as a description of the format—a road-going passenger vehicle with an elevating roof and camping equipment—not as a claim that the RG20 is the same vehicle, is sold in the same markets, or has identical specifications to a Volkswagen California.
How much did the RG20 cost?
Contemporaneous 2020 China preorder reports listed two versions: Sunshine at RMB 269,800 and Time at RMB 309,800. Those are launch-era preorder prices, not a verified current price for every configuration or a quote for buyers outside China. The official page’s current “from” figure is RMB 269,800; check with a local SAIC MAXUS dealer for current availability, specification, taxes and pricing. Can it sleep four, and how does the roof work?
The elevating roof creates an upper sleeping area and extra headroom when parked. The RG20 can be configured as a two-sleeper, using the roof bed, or as a four-sleeper by adding a bed made from the folding lower bench. Launch coverage gives the upper bed dimensions as 2,100 × 1,100 mm and describes about 900 mm of room beneath the raised roof; New Atlas gives approximate bed dimensions of 220 × 110 cm. For driving, the roof lowers to roughly 204–204.3 cm overall height, according to launch coverage. That is a key practical advantage over a permanently high-roof camper, but it does not guarantee that the vehicle will clear a particular garage, car park or barrier. What kitchen, water and toilet equipment does it have?
The refrigerator and sink are concealed in a side console, and a slide-out exterior work surface can be used with a portable single-burner stove. Reported equipment includes a 60 L fresh-water tank, an outdoor shower sprayer, a tailgate privacy tent and a portable toilet. New Atlas reports a 200 Ah battery, 2,000 W inverter, LED lighting, mains charging, a water hookup and interior “hydroelectric heating.” The source’s wording does not establish how that heating system works or its operating limits, so buyers should confirm the precise equipment and requirements for the version they are considering. What engine and transmission does the RG20 use?
Independent coverage describes an RG20 with a 2.0-liter direct-injected turbocharged petrol engine, a ZF eight-speed automatic transmission and rear-wheel drive, rated up to 221 hp and 258 lb-ft. Chinese launch coverage also reported petrol and diesel possibilities aligned with the G20 range. The G20 donor-platform page lists 2.0T petrol and diesel engines and a ZF automatic, but donor-vehicle details do not prove that every engine or specification was offered on every RG20 trim.
