What happened in the Corvette transaction?
On October 4, 2022, Zhou used another person’s stolen identity to obtain $114,175.31 in financing for a 2021 Chevrolet Corvette, according to federal prosecutors. He also submitted a forged $14,000 check in the name of a different identity-theft victim as the down payment, then transported the Corvette to New York for resale.
The financing amount and the check were separate parts of the transaction: prosecutors describe the former as the amount of financing obtained and the latter as a forged down payment.

Prosecutors said Zhou and others used stolen personal and financial information, along with stolen or counterfeit identity cards, to apply for loans to buy or lease at least six luxury vehicles from a dealership in Greenwich, Connecticut. “According to court documents and statements made in court, Zhou and others used stolen personal and financial information and stolen or counterfeit identity cards from multiple identity theft victims to apply for loans to purchase or lease at least six luxury vehicles with a total value of more than $650,000 from a car dealership in Greenwich,” U.S. Attorney David X. Sullivan said in the Justice Department announcement.
The U.S. Attorney’s Office said most of the vehicles were repossessed before resale. It did not say that every vehicle was recovered.

What Zhou pleaded guilty to and the sentence
Zhou, 43, of Flushing, New York, pleaded guilty on May 22, 2026, to one count of conspiracy to commit bank and wire fraud and one count of aggravated identity theft. U.S. District Judge Sarala V. Nagala sentenced him to 42 months in federal prison in Hartford. The sentencing hearing took place on September 23, 2026; the U.S. Attorney’s Office announced the sentence the following day.
The case was resolved by a guilty plea, not a jury verdict. Zhou had been detained since his arrest on August 30, 2024.

Is 42 months severe for this kind of scheme?
