The order is not a failure-rate ranking, and a brand’s bikes can vary substantially by model. Check the exact bike and a realistic service option near you before choosing.
How to read this ranking
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission’s 2022 market report describes a market split between lower-priced direct-to-consumer bikes and more expensive bikes sold through dealer networks. Its pricing and market observations are from 2022, not current quotes. The report says adult bikes accounted for nearly 90% of e-bike sales volume, citing industry sources, and describes many purchases as entry-level bikes priced below $2,000. It identifies Lectric and Rad Power Bikes as important direct-to-consumer brands in that segment; for mid-market and higher-priced bikes, it names Trek, Specialized, and Cannondale as examples of brands with extensive dealer networks and service expertise. CPSC market report, 2022
The ranking gives the most weight to practical category coverage and the likelihood a buyer can get the bike repaired, then considers price and components, motor and battery ecosystem, and model examples. Warranty terms are not ranked: comparable current official policies were not established for every brand. Dealer availability is not a guarantee that a shop will service every model or drive system. Confirm both before buying.
The brands below are a buyer-oriented selection of major U.S. market names, not an exhaustive list or a measured market-share table. The CPSC report identifies several of them as major U.S. players. Its list, alongside the categories and examples covered in current cycling guides, informs the selection; a brand-authored Aventon list is useful as a candidate list but not independent evidence for the ranking. Major e-bike brands ranked worst to best for this buying guide
“Worst” here means a less compelling all-around starting point under these criteria—not a claim that the brand makes unreliable bikes. A specialist can be an excellent choice when its particular category is the one you need.

10. Super73
Super73 appears in a 2024 brand-authored roundup of e-bike makers, but the available evidence here does not establish a like-for-like comparison of its full lineup, local service access, or current value against the brands above it. Treat it as a model-specific candidate, not a safe default based on name recognition. Check whether nearby repair shops will service the exact bike and its electrical system before purchase. Aventon’s 2024 list
-
9. Velotric
Velotric is also included in that brand-authored roundup. The evidence available for this comparison does not settle how its current models compare on components, warranty, or service access, so its place is a cautious editorial position rather than a quality verdict. Compare a specific Velotric model with bikes in the same category and price range, and verify local service first. Aventon’s 2024 list
-
8. Nakto
The CPSC’s 2022 report names Nakto among major U.S. market players, but provides no brand-level reliability comparison. That market presence alone cannot establish parts availability or repair support for a particular bike. Ask a local shop whether it will service the specific model and confirm replacement-part availability before treating a low purchase price as good value. CPSC market report

7. Rad Power Bikes
The CPSC identifies Rad Power Bikes as an important direct-to-consumer name in the entry-level segment in its 2022 market research. That channel can suit buyers comparing utility-oriented bikes and upfront cost, but it makes the repair plan especially important: confirm that a shop near you will handle the exact bike and drive system. The report’s segment and price observations are historical, not current Rad prices. CPSC market report
-
6. Lectric
Lectric is another direct-to-consumer brand the CPSC singled out as important in the entry-level segment in 2022. Its position reflects the relevance of that segment, not proof of superior or inferior reliability. If you are considering a folding or utility-oriented model, compare the actual configuration, fit, components, and total cost with alternatives—and find out who can service it locally. 5. Aventon
Aventon has substantial visibility in U.S. e-bike sources, but visibility is not a proxy for quality. In a Vermont Agency of Transportation incentive-program report, Aventon represented 59% of redeemed e-bike vouchers, followed by Gazelle at 11% and Specialized at 7%. Those figures describe that program’s redemptions, not Vermont-wide sales, national market share, or product reliability. Aventon’s own 2024 brand roundup is promotional, so it is useful for identifying makers, not validating a ranking. Vermont incentive-program report Aventon’s 2024 list

4. Cannondale
Cannondale earns a high place for breadth and dealer-channel presence, rather than an established brand-wide reliability advantage. The CPSC names it among brands sold through extensive dealer networks in its 2022 report. A Cycling Weekly 2026 guide describes the Cannondale Compact Neo as a compact city-bike option and reports a 250-watt rear-hub motor for that model. That example is one bike, not a description of the entire range; confirm current model-year specifications and local service. CPSC market report Cycling Weekly’s 2026 guide

3. Trek
Trek’s dealer-supported sales channel makes it a strong option for buyers who value fitting help and a local repair conversation. The CPSC’s 2022 report lists Trek among established brands with extensive dealer networks; it does not establish current coverage in any individual buyer’s area. Contact a nearby dealer about the exact model, service and replacement parts before deciding that a nearby storefront solves the support question. CPSC market report
-
2. Specialized
Specialized combines dealer-channel support with examples across distinct riding styles. Cycling Weekly’s 2026 guide describes the Turbo Creo 2 Expert Carbon as an adventure-oriented e-bike and reports a Specialized SL 1.2 motor and 320Wh battery for that model. Those specifications apply to the named model, not the full Specialized range. A Vermont incentive-program report also records Specialized at 7% of redeemed e-bike vouchers; that is a local program statistic, not a quality measure. 1. Giant
Giant takes the top spot as an all-around shortlist starting point because it is among the established dealer-network brands named by the CPSC and appears in the broader candidate set of major e-bike makers. That is an editorial judgment based on category and channel breadth, not evidence that Giant has the lowest failure rate or is best for every rider. Check the model that matches your use, then verify that a local shop supports its specific motor and battery system. CPSC market report Aventon’s 2024 list
What brand rankings can—and cannot—say about reliability
Whole-bike reliability includes more than the motor: frame, battery, brakes, drivetrain, wiring, assembly, parts supply, and the ability to get a repair all matter. The evidence cited here does not provide comparable failure rates across these brands. Nor can a retailer survey of motor-system suppliers be converted into a ranking of complete-bike makers.
The National Bicycle Dealers Association says 224 participants responded to its 2025 survey, which was open until June 10, 2025. Retailers ranked e-bike system suppliers on areas including quality, satisfaction, training, brand recognition, service timing, warranty and support, maintenance, and batteries. That is retailer feedback about suppliers and systems—not a population-representative consumer survey or a whole-bike brand reliability test. NBDA quotes Bosch eBike Systems’ VP/GM Americas Claudia Wasko saying, “We are honored to see Bosch eBike Systems recognized as the leader in overall satisfaction and quality.” This is a vendor statement in the survey release, not independent proof that bikes using Bosch systems are more reliable overall. NBDA survey release, 2025
Bosch and Shimano are major drive-system names; lightweight e-road bikes may use Fazua, TQ, or Mahle, while Bafang appears on budget bikes. A motor supplier can affect parts and service options, but it does not determine the quality of every bike using that system. Ask a prospective shop whether it services the exact motor and battery fitted to the model you want. Cycling Weekly’s 2026 guide

How to turn the ranking into a shortlist
-
Choose the bike category first
Decide whether you need a commuter, cargo, folding, recreational, road, or mountain bike. Compare bikes built for the same job; a compact city bike and an adventure-oriented road bike do not compete on the same terms. For example, Cycling Weekly’s 2026 guide describes the Tern GSD S10 as a cargo-bike choice, the Specialized Turbo Creo 2 Expert Carbon as adventure-oriented, and the Cannondale Compact Neo as a compact city option. Those examples illustrate different uses, not comparative winners. Cycling Weekly’s 2026 guide
-
Compare complete bikes, not badges
For models in the same category and price band, compare frame fit, motor, battery, brakes, drivetrain, and integrated features. Consider the full cost of getting a suitable bike and maintaining it, rather than treating a lower sticker price as the whole value calculation.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy. -
Check the service route before buying
Ask a nearby shop whether it will work on the exact make, model, and electrical system. For direct-to-consumer bikes, do not assume that any general bicycle shop will handle motor or battery work. For dealer-sold bikes, verify that the dealer near you supports the specific model.
-
Read the current warranty and parts terms
Check the manufacturer’s official, U.S.-specific warranty for the exact model and components, along with who handles claims and how replacement parts can be obtained. Terms can differ between bike parts and electrical components; a brand name alone does not settle what is covered.
-
Ride or assess the exact model
Fit, handling, intended load, and riding position are model-level questions. One well-regarded model does not make every bike from the same brand a suitable choice.
Sources and scope
The CPSC’s market report is dated 2022, so its prices and market descriptions are historical context, not a current price list or present-day share estimate. The Cycling Weekly guide is dated 2026 and supplies model examples; model-year availability and specifications should be checked with the manufacturer or seller. The Vermont figures are specific to a state incentive program. None of these sources establishes a complete, current warranty comparison or comparable whole-bike failure rates for all brands in this ranking.
