MAHLE says its owl-inspired bionic fan can reduce noise by up to 4 dB(A), raise efficiency by 10 percent and cut weight by 10 percent compared with conventional fans. Those are manufacturer-reported figures, not independently verified results for this specific fan in the cited sources. Announced in August 2024 as an OEM thermal-management component, it was being trialed in prototypes with passenger-car and commercial-vehicle manufacturers.
Why is this EV fan inspired by an owl?
MAHLE used AI-assisted blade optimization and modeled blade features on owl wings and feathers, aiming to reduce the turbulence that creates fan noise. The owl—not birds of prey generally—is the company’s main design template. Dr. Uli Christian Blessing, MAHLE’s Head of Development Thermal Management, said: “We finally ended up with the owl, the silent hunter, as the main template for our new fan.” (MAHLE, August 13, 2024)
The fan is intended for thermal management in battery-electric and fuel-cell vehicles. MAHLE announced a power range of 300 W to 35 kW, suggesting the design is meant to serve a broad range of vehicle cooling applications rather than one specific car or one retail replacement part.
How much quieter and more efficient is it?
MAHLE reports up to 4 dB(A) less noise, 10 percent higher efficiency and 10 percent lower weight than conventional fans. The company repeated those improvements in its August 2024 announcement and its 2025 Innovations for Sustainable Mobility brochure. The sources do not provide an independent test of MAHLE’s specific fan, nor do they establish the test conditions behind these headline figures.

That distinction matters when comparing fan claims. Noise, airflow, pressure, electrical input and installation all affect results. SAE’s J2867_202410 measurement standard, revised October 2, 2024, describes measuring airflow and pressure alongside voltage and current, and notes that installation geometry and system resistance influence performance. A quieter fan is useful only if it also delivers the cooling performance the vehicle system requires.
What does independent research on bio-inspired fans show?
A 2021 study by Shuwen Wang and co-authors tested a different automobile cooling fan with bio-inspired ridges. In that experiment, a design with 4 mm-wide ridges at 15 mm pitch produced a sound pressure level 3.83 dB(A) below the original fan at 1,750 r/min. This is evidence that bio-inspired blade features can be investigated for noise reduction; it is not a test or validation of MAHLE’s fan. The study’s figure and MAHLE’s claimed reduction are not directly comparable because they concern different fan designs and evidence contexts. (Wang et al., 2021)

Is the MAHLE fan available for cars?
The available product announcement describes an OEM engineering component and says prototypes were being trialed with passenger-car and commercial-vehicle manufacturers. It does not establish current production or retail availability, name a vehicle fitment, or identify a compatible replacement part. Drivers should not assume the fan is a direct aftermarket upgrade for a particular vehicle.
