The Thar OG starts below the Jimny, but its listed top price is higher. These are ex-showroom figures, not on-road prices; on-road totals vary with location, taxes, insurance and registration. Prices can change, so confirm a current quote with a dealer. The comparison identifies the least expensive Thar OG as a 2WD diesel manual, whereas every Jimny is 4WD. Comparing only the two starting prices therefore compares different drivetrain equipment, not like-for-like vehicles. Compare trims with the same transmission and drivetrain where possible. Space and dimensions: Jimny has five doors and seats; Thar is wider
Both vehicles are nearly four metres long, but the Jimny is substantially narrower and has a longer wheelbase. The comparison lists the Thar OG as a three-door, four-seat vehicle and the Jimny as a five-door, five-seat vehicle. That makes the Jimny’s layout the more relevant starting point for buyers who need a fifth seat or easier access to a rear row. Width may also matter on narrow streets and trails.

The published dimensions do not establish usable luggage capacity, rear-seat comfort or ease of loading. If luggage is a deciding factor, check current boot-volume information and inspect both vehicles with the seats in the configuration you expect to use. Off-road capability: different strengths, not one specification-sheet winner
The comparison’s geometry figures favour the Thar OG on clearance, approach and rampover angles; the Jimny leads on departure angle. These measurements describe different obstacles and do not prove how either vehicle will perform on a particular trail. Tyres, variant, driver skill and the shape of the obstacle all matter.

There is an unresolved conflict in Autocar India’s September 24, 2026 comparison: its table gives the Thar OG 232 mm of ground clearance, while its accompanying text says 226 mm. The figures above preserve the table value and disclose the discrepancy; confirm the current OG figure against an up-to-date Mahindra specification sheet before relying on it. Drivetrain and hardware
Autocar India lists three engine choices for the Thar OG. The stronger petrol and diesel engines are offered with rear-wheel drive or 4WD configurations, while its 1.5-litre diesel is rear-wheel drive. The Jimny has one 1.5-litre petrol engine, with a five-speed manual or four-speed automatic, and 4WD is standard across its range. The Jimny’s June 2024 NEXA brochure specifies ALLGRIP PRO with a low-range transfer gear. Autocar describes terrain modes on the Thar OG and rigid axles front and rear on the Jimny; it also lists electronic locking differentials in 4WD for both models. Older brochure figures should not be substituted for current OG specifications. Mahindra’s November 2024 Thar brochure describes the earlier model, including 226 mm clearance and 650 mm wading depth; it predates the Thar OG update. - Choose the Jimny for consideration if standard 4WD, a five-door body, five seats or a narrower vehicle are high priorities. Its narrower width and longer wheelbase are published dimensions, not proof of better comfort or trail access in every situation.
- Consider the Thar OG if you want a broader engine choice, the option of 2WD or 4WD on specified engines, or the higher clearance, approach and rampover figures listed in the comparison. Its range includes a lower entry price, but the least expensive version is 2WD.
- Compare exact variants before deciding: match drivetrain and transmission, verify trim-specific off-road equipment, and get current ex-showroom and on-road quotes.
- Check your actual passenger and luggage needs in person. The seat count and body layout differ, but the published figures do not settle cargo capacity or comfort.
