Choose the Thar OG by deciding first whether you will use four-wheel drive, then matching engine and transmission to your driving, and finally paying for the trim equipment you want. The AXT is the budget entry point; LXT adds convenience and infotainment; ZXT adds lighting, parking aids and more listed safety equipment. Mahindra’s introductory prices are ex-showroom and apply to deliveries through 30 November 2026, so use a current dealer quotation before budgeting.
Start with the drivetrain: RWD or 4WD?
For commuting, highway use and ordinary paved-road driving, a rear-wheel-drive (RWD) configuration is the simpler fit if you do not expect to use trails or difficult surfaces. Mahindra’s general variant guide frames 2WD for routine road use and 4WD for more demanding off-road conditions; it describes the 4WD system as having a low-ratio transfer case and electronic brake-locking differential (BLD). If regular trail or difficult-surface driving is part of the plan, compare the OG’s listed 4WD configurations and confirm the exact equipment on the quotation. Mahindra’s owner manual says not to use 4WD on normal hard-surfaced roads; follow its guidance for operation. Thar Owner’s Manual
Not every engine, transmission and trim combination is offered in both drivetrains. Check the specific row for the configuration you intend to buy rather than assuming that a feature or powertrain is available across the range.

Choose an engine and transmission for your use
Mahindra’s 22 September 2026 launch release lists three engines and these output figures. They are manufacturer-published specifications, not independent measurements. Mahindra Thar OG launch release

Petrol or diesel
The published range gives buyers both fuel types, but the launch information does not establish comparative fuel economy or ownership costs. Decide based on your expected use, fuel preference and the exact configurations available; do not infer a mileage advantage from the engine outputs.

Manual or automatic
Where both are offered, the choice is about driving preference and conditions such as frequent traffic, as well as the configuration’s price. Mahindra’s guide likewise presents transmission choice as a matter of preference and terrain use, rather than supplying independent comparison results.

Compare the announced introductory prices
These are Mahindra’s introductory ex-showroom prices in lakh rupees, announced on 22 September 2026 for deliveries through 30 November 2026. They are not on-road prices, and a dealer should confirm current availability and the exact powertrain-to-price mapping—especially for D22 configurations, whose columns in the release’s displayed table are awkwardly aligned. Because the offer is tied to a delivery deadline, ask the dealer to confirm whether it applies to your delivery date and request the full on-road quote, including applicable taxes, registration and insurance. Compare the actual quotation—not just the introductory ex-showroom figure—with the value of the trim additions you want.

Lowest-price, road-focused choice
Start with the AXT D117 diesel RWD manual at its announced introductory price. Move up only if a specific LXT or ZXT addition is worth the extra amount to you; do not pay for 4WD if you do not expect to use it.
Road use with more convenience
Look at LXT in the engine and transmission combination you prefer. Its touchscreen, display, cruise control and convenience additions distinguish it from AXT, while the RWD versions suit buyers whose driving does not call for 4WD.
Frequent trails or difficult surfaces
Choose from the listed 4WD configurations and confirm the low-range and electronic locking features for that exact version. Use 4WD according to the owner manual rather than treating it as an all-road setting.
Priority on listed parking and safety equipment
Consider ZXT if you value its rear camera, front parking sensors, TPMS, rear disc brakes and six-airbag equipment listing. Those features do not establish a crash-test rating.

What is known about the Thar OG launch?
Mahindra announced the Thar OG on 22 September 2026 as the successor to the three-door Thar unveiled in 2020. The company said deliveries would begin 11 October 2026. Those are launch-announcement dates; confirm delivery timing with a dealer. In the launch release, Mahindra executive Dr Velusamy R, President, Automotive Business, described the vehicle as having advances in on-road refinement and off-road capability. That is the manufacturer’s claim, not an independent road-test finding.
