This is a historical showcase of designs highlighted that year—not a ranking or a guide to vehicles currently available new.
New Atlas published its year-end roundup on December 23, 2021, covering vehicles with sharply different formats and ambitions. Some were conversions designed around a specific activity, such as carrying a motorcycle; others used slide-outs or raised sections to create more living space. The descriptions below reflect that 2021 roundup, rather than current manufacturer specifications or inventory.
Adventure vans and compact motorhome layouts
Airstream Interstate 24X
The Interstate 24X was presented as a four-wheel-drive, adventure-oriented camper van: a comfortable base for outdoor activities, rather than simply a road vehicle with a bed.
Challenger Combo X150
The Combo X150 paired a van-like length and wheelbase with the interior arrangement of a small motorhome. New Atlas described its Smart Lounge configuration as seating five, a layout-focused detail that distinguishes it from a conventional van conversion.

Layouts built around carrying vehicles or hosting
WoodVans Moto
The WoodVans Moto was a Citroën Jumper-based conversion that combined a motorcycle garage with living space. An elevated sleeping area helped fit the two functions into one vehicle.
Loef camper
This stretched MAN TGE conversion was arranged for cooking and company. It had two dining areas and a rear slide-out ceramic grill, making its unusual layout more about hosting than maximizing a simple sleeping compartment.

Duckworth Overland Aerover
The Aerover concept combined a Land Rover Defender with an aluminum camper body, bringing off-road styling together with coachbuilt accommodation. At the time of the roundup, its interior was not yet finished, so the report did not present it as a completed, fully specified living space.

How to compare the 2021 designs
These vehicles do not share a single meaningful “best” scale. A useful comparison starts with their format and the way their space is arranged, then asks what the design is meant to support.
| Vehicle | Format or layout | Standout feature | Emphasis in the 2021 roundup |
|---|---|---|---|
| Airstream Interstate 24X | Camper van | Four-wheel drive | Adventure travel |
| Challenger Combo X150 | Van-like length and wheelbase; small-motorhome arrangement | Smart Lounge seating described for five | Compact interior practicality |
| SAIC Maxus V90 Life Home Villa Edition | Large motorhome | Slide-outs, raised second story, and elevator | Expanded living space |
| Volkner Performance S | Ultra-luxury motorhome | Garage for a high-value vehicle | Luxury touring and vehicle transport |
| WoodVans Moto | Citroën Jumper conversion | Motorcycle garage and elevated sleeping area | Motorcycle-carrying travel |
| Bürstner Lyseo Gallery | Compact motorhome concept | Inflatable upper section | Additional bedroom and small office |
| Loef camper | Stretched MAN TGE conversion | Two dining areas and rear slide-out ceramic grill | Cooking and hosting |
| Duckworth Overland Aerover | Defender-based camper concept | Aluminum coachbuilt accommodation | Off-road styling; interior unfinished when reported |
| Dembell motorhome | Luxury coach | Configurable garage for a motorcycle or compact car | Luxury touring with vehicle storage |
| Vantech Raccoon L | Hyundai Staria conversion | Slide-out sundeck | Flexible living and outdoor lounging |
The roundup does not provide a common test protocol or consistent figures for price, payload, fuel use, safety, or driving performance. Those omissions matter: a concept, a specialized conversion, and a luxury coach cannot be compared fairly on road performance or value from these descriptions alone.
What the 2021 RV market figures measured
The roundup also set its vehicle showcase against a period of strong RV activity, but its two regional figures describe different measures and should not be combined.
- United States: The article reported that 510,608 towable and motorized RVs had shipped by October 2021, citing the RV Industry Association. It said the count had surpassed the 2017 record; it was a year-to-date shipment figure, not the final total for 2021.
- Europe: Registrations through September 2021 had reached 93% of the prior year’s 235,000 registrations, according to the European Caravan Federation as reported by New Atlas. This is a registration measure, not a shipment count.
New Atlas attributed this statement to Craig Kirby, then president and CEO of RVIA: “With this latest report, 2021 officially becomes the year the RV industry built more RVs than ever before – and that is with two months left in the year,” The statement and figures describe the industry at the time; they are not current market statistics.
Source and scope
The vehicle descriptions and historical market context here come from C.C. Weiss’s New Atlas retrospective, “Magnificent motorhomes and large camper vans of 2021,” published December 23, 2021. It is useful as a record of the designs highlighted that year, but does not establish present-day availability, current prices, or specifications across manufacturers and markets.
