Maeving RM2 review: the changes that make this electric motorcycle more practical

The Maeving RM2 improves on the single-seat RM1S with passenger capability, revised suspension, upgraded brakes, removable batteries and practical luggage options. Here is what those changes mean for range, price, charging, licensing and everyday use.

Yes—but only if “perfect package” means a premium urban electric motorcycle, not a cheap long-distance replacement for a conventional bike. The Maeving RM2 fixes the RM1S’s biggest weakness by adding a proper passenger seat and footrests, then backs that up with revised rear packaging, upgraded brakes, adjustable rear suspension, removable dual batteries and more useful luggage options.

The result is a more credible daily commuter and short-trip two-up machine. Its limits are just as important: the U.S. starting price is $10,995, the advertised 80-mile range is not an 80-mile-at-70-mph promise, and a passenger or heavy luggage will reduce range.

The RM2 is the Maeving RM1S made into a more usable motorcycle

The Maeving RM2 is not a ground-up reinvention of the RM1S. Its importance is more practical: Maeving added a proper pillion seat, passenger footrests, a stronger and more accommodating rear end, upgraded brakes, revised suspension and useful luggage choices. Those changes turn a stylish single-seat electric runabout into a much more credible two-person commuter.

That does not make it perfect. The RM2 remains expensive for a compact urban motorcycle, its headline range is not a 70-mph range figure, and carrying a passenger or luggage will reduce the distance available. The most accurate verdict is that the RM2 is a premium, urban-focused electric motorcycle with a better ownership package than the RM1S—not a substitute for a long-distance tourer or an inexpensive all-purpose bike.

What changed from the RM1S?

Area RM1S RM2 Why it matters
Seating Single-seat layout Longer bench seat with passenger footrests The RM2 can carry a passenger, subject to local licensing and safety rules.
Rear-end design More compact solo-bike packaging Rear mudguard mounted beneath the seat, with the rear light and license plate positioned higher It creates space for the two-up layout and luggage options.
Brakes Earlier RM1S equipment Upgraded front and rear disc brakes More appropriate for the RM2’s higher carrying capability.
Suspension Earlier setup Twin preload-adjustable rear shocks with 104 mm of travel on Maeving’s current detailed specification Preload adjustment gives more scope to account for rider, passenger and luggage weight.
Payload More limited by the solo configuration Up to 215 kg listed for the current UK specification It is a meaningful improvement, but payload is a total permitted load rather than a 215-kg luggage allowance.
Storage Primarily a solo-bike proposition Rear rack, solo rack, 30-liter top box and 14-liter pannier options You can configure the bike for a passenger or prioritize cargo capacity.

The key improvement is the combination rather than any one component. A pillion seat alone would not make the RM2 a practical two-up machine if the brakes, suspension and rear packaging remained unchanged. Maeving addressed those areas together, which is why the RM2 feels like a more complete version of the original concept.

Two-up capability is the real reason to choose the RM2

The RM1S’s single-seat limitation made it a personal commuter. The RM2’s longer bench seat and passenger footrests make it useful for short trips with a second person: a ride to a station, a quick errand or an urban journey that would otherwise require a car.

The distinction is important because “two-seat” does not mean “ideal for every passenger or every trip.” The RM2 is still a lightweight motorcycle with urban-focused performance. A passenger adds weight, changes braking and handling demands, and reduces available range. Before ordering, check the permitted load for the exact market specification and consider the combined weight of the rider, passenger, clothing, luggage and accessories.

Maeving lists a 215-kg payload and 360-kg permitted total weight for the current UK specification. Those figures should not automatically be assumed to apply identically to every U.S. configuration. Confirm the rating on the motorcycle’s local documentation if regular two-up use is central to the purchase.

How the RM2 rides according to published tests

T3 found the riding position upright, the seat flat and the throttle manageable. The reviewer also described the bar-mounted brakes as progressive and the motorcycle as easy to maneuver through city traffic. Those traits should make the RM2 approachable for riders moving from a scooter or starting with a relatively light powered two-wheeler, although a motorcycle license, proper training and protective equipment still matter.

Acceleration is strongest at urban speeds. T3 reported quick acceleration up to approximately 40 mph, followed by a noticeable tail-off as the RM2 approaches its claimed maximum. That behavior fits the bike’s intended role: it should feel lively away from traffic lights and useful on city streets, but it is not engineered to deliver strong high-speed acceleration indefinitely.

Maeving’s U.S. product information lists a claimed top speed of 70 mph. That makes occasional faster-road use possible where legal and appropriate, but it should not be mistaken for evidence that the RM2 is a relaxed highway motorcycle. Wind, hills, rider weight and traffic speed all affect how comfortable and useful it will be away from town.

Motor, battery and range

The detailed specification lists a 7.2-kW continuous hub motor with 11.1 kW of peak power. The battery system consists of two removable 2.73-kWh packs, for 5.46 kWh in total, using LG M50LT cells.

ILM Motorcycle Dual Visor Flip up Modular Full Face Helmet DOT with 6 Colors Model 902 (L, Matte Black)
  • High Resistance ABS Shell With Micrometrically Adjustable Strap
  • Meets or Exceeds FMVSS-218 and DOT Safety Standards
  • Helmet Liner / Cheek Pads are Lightweight, Soft and Easily Removable and Washable
  • Sleek and Lightweight Design Reduces Wind Noise
  • Modular Flip-Up Function Anti-Scratch, Anti-Fog and Wide View Clear Visor

For the U.S. market, Maeving advertises up to 80 miles of range. The more detailed UK specification gives important context:

  • Up to 80 miles in combined riding under the company’s stated WMTC-based claim.
  • Up to 90 miles in the 45-mph limited mode.
  • Up to 52 miles in Sport mode.

Those figures are not interchangeable. Maeving says temperature, wind, gradients, rider weight, riding style, average speed and passenger weight all affect range. The 80-mile headline therefore should not be read as “80 miles at 70 mph,” and the Sport-mode figure is much closer to the kind of result a rider should expect when frequently using the bike’s performance.

One T3 test is useful as context rather than proof of a universal result: after nearly a full day of mixed riding, the reviewer reported at least 30 miles remaining. That suggests the RM2 can have a comfortable margin for some commuting patterns, but route length, speed, weather and payload will determine whether that is true for an individual owner.

Three riding modes change the range conversation

Maeving’s help information describes three relevant limits:

  • Sport: permits speeds up to 70 mph and uses the most energy.
  • Mode 1: limits the bike to 45 mph.
  • Eco: limits speed to 30 mph to extend range.

For a city commute, Eco or the 45-mph mode may be sufficient and can make the battery claim more attainable. For faster roads, Sport is likely to be the natural choice, but the company’s own figures show the trade-off clearly. Buyers should choose the RM2 based on the range they need in their actual mode and conditions, not the largest number on the product page.

Charging is one of the RM2’s strongest practical features

Both batteries can be removed and charged from a standard household outlet, or the motorcycle can be plugged in with the batteries installed. That flexibility is particularly valuable for apartment dwellers, renters and garage users who cannot install a dedicated motorcycle charger near the parking space.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Maeving’s UK specification lists these charge times:

Charge level Claimed time
0–100% 6 hours
20–80% 2.5 hours
20–100% 4 hours

The 2.5-hour 20–80% figure is the useful daily number. A rider who can bring the packs indoors or reach an outlet during the day has more flexibility than someone relying on a single overnight charging location. The U.S. configurator also lists a dual charging dock as a $165 option, though accessory prices can change.

Removable batteries do add handling and storage considerations. They are not weightless, and owners need a dry, secure place to charge them. The feature is most valuable when it solves a real parking or electrical-access problem; it is less important for a rider with reliable overnight charging beside the motorcycle.

AUBOA Motorcycle Helmets for Adult Men Women, Full Face Lightweight Street Bike Racing DOT Helmet with Extra Clear Visor Model AU-T801 Matte Black, Large
  • Safety: The motorcycle helmets AU-T801 Meets or exceeds FMVSS-218 and DOT Safety Standards. The excellent ABS shell plus stable EPS foam brings strong impact resistance performance and greatly improves riding safety.
  • Lightweight: Integrated fin and shell design means this is an extremely lightweight motorcycle helmet for Adult men and women. Even a long time ride will put your neck and shoulder in a relaxed state.
  • Two Visors: The Full Face motorcycle helmet is equipped with a colorful visor, and a replacement clear visor. Provide a sufficient guarantee for your day and night riding view.
  • Design Details: The visor lock design means less wind noise and better security. Multiple vents are designed to better promote ventilation inside the motorcycle helmet. Removable and washable liners further enhance the riding experience.
  • Multiple Function: Perfect for motorcycle, street bike, racing, motocross, ATV, or other outdoor activities. Also a good choice for for people who are just starting to ride.

Storage: choose whether the RM2 is a passenger bike or a cargo bike

The U.S. configuration materials list four useful storage choices:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • 30-liter lockable top box: the best fit for weather-protected everyday items such as a small bag or shopping.
  • 14-liter roll-top pannier: useful for lighter, flexible cargo, but its fitting instructions specify a maximum safe load of 3 kg.
  • Rear rack: preserves the pillion seat, so it is the logical choice when passenger capability still matters.
  • Solo rack: replaces the pillion seat with a cargo platform, prioritizing carrying capacity over two-up use.

The current U.S. configurator lists the roll-top pannier at $295, the solo rack at $195, the rear rack at $245, the top box at $145 and the dual charging dock at $165. Treat those as time-sensitive prices rather than permanent MSRP.

In practical terms, the rear rack is the more versatile configuration, while the solo rack makes sense for an owner who almost never carries a passenger. Do not assume that a luggage accessory turns the RM2 into a delivery bike: the pannier’s 3-kg limit is a useful reminder that compact motorcycle storage has strict load boundaries.

If the lockable box is the deciding feature, check the current official fitment and price for the Maeving RM2 top box before ordering. Accessories, mounting hardware and availability can vary by market.

Maintenance is simpler, not nonexistent

The hub motor removes chain lubrication and engine-oil checks from the routine. T3 characterized regular maintenance as mainly involving brake pads and general wear items, and Maeving advertises servicing at the owner’s door in the United States.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

That does not make the RM2 maintenance-free. Tires, brakes, suspension components, fasteners, lights and other wear or safety items still need inspection. Passenger use and heavier luggage can also increase tire and brake demands. “At-home servicing” is best understood as a convenience feature, not a reason to ignore the maintenance schedule or pre-ride checks.

U.S. price, value and availability

Maeving’s U.S. product page lists a starting price of $10,995. That is premium money for a compact motorcycle, especially before accessories, taxes, registration, freight or other transaction charges. The value argument is therefore not that the RM2 is cheap.

The stronger value case is the package: removable dual batteries, a two-person layout, urban-friendly controls, luggage flexibility, a low-maintenance hub motor and advertised at-home servicing. A buyer who values those features may reasonably prefer the RM2 over a cheaper conventional motorcycle. A buyer focused primarily on maximum range, highway performance or lowest purchase price should look elsewhere.

For context, T3 reported a UK starting price of £7,995 in October 2025. It compared the RM2 with the BMW CE 02 and conventional motorcycles including the Honda GB350S and Royal Enfield Bear 650. Those comparisons are useful for positioning, but a U.S. £-to-$ conversion is not a meaningful price comparison: taxes, freight, local equipment, currency, market positioning and specifications differ.

Licensing, insurance and first-ride requirements

United States

Maeving’s U.S. materials identify the RM2 license category as M1. Maeving’s U.S. test-ride requirements say the rider must hold an M1 motorcycle license and show current auto-insurance proof; Maeving says it provides a helmet for the test ride.

M1 terminology and motorcycle requirements are not a substitute for checking local law. State rules can differ on endorsements, registration, passenger eligibility, helmet use, minimum age and insurance. Verify the requirements with your state DMV and insurer before riding on public roads. Also obtain quotes for electric motorcycle insurance before committing to the purchase, because premiums, coverage and model eligibility vary by state.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Before a first ride, budget for a properly certified motorcycle helmet that fits correctly and meets the standard required in your jurisdiction. Maeving providing a helmet for a test ride does not mean that any particular online listing is Maeving-approved or suitable for ownership. Add gloves, abrasion-resistant clothing and appropriate footwear rather than treating the RM2’s approachable controls as a reason to reduce protective equipment.

United Kingdom

UK licensing is more complicated in the available material. T3 reported that the RM2 can be ridden on CBT with limitations but said carrying a pillion requires an A2 license or above. Maeving’s help content separately says that carrying a passenger on its motorcycles requires an A1 license or higher. Because those statements do not match, UK readers should confirm the applicable requirement with Maeving and the DVLA or current government guidance before carrying a passenger. Do not transfer either UK rule to a U.S. state.

Training is worthwhile even for a light electric motorcycle. Maeving’s New Rider Program materials describe a discount for completing an approved motorcycle safety course before ordering. Maeving’s pages display conflicting discount amounts—$250 in one place and $500 in another—so confirm both eligibility and the current amount directly before treating it as part of the purchase calculation.

Who should buy the RM2?

The RM2 makes the most sense for a rider who:

  • Primarily rides in town or on moderate-speed urban routes.
  • Wants the simplicity and quiet operation of an electric motorcycle.
  • Needs removable batteries because parking is away from a convenient outlet.
  • Sometimes carries a passenger but does not need a full-size touring motorcycle.
  • Values design, low routine drivetrain maintenance and flexible luggage more than the lowest price.
  • Can accept conservative highway-range expectations.

It is a weaker fit for a rider who:

  • Regularly travels long distances at or near 70 mph.
  • Needs guaranteed two-up range over substantial distances.
  • Wants the maximum cargo capacity for the money.
  • Has no practical way to safely store and charge the removable batteries.
  • Is comparing it only by purchase price against small conventional motorcycles.

A sensible RM2 buying checklist

  1. Map the real route. Include hills, wind, traffic speed and the return trip. Decide whether you will normally use Eco, 45-mph Mode 1 or Sport.
  2. Decide how often you will carry someone. Keep the passenger seat and choose the rear rack if two-up flexibility matters; choose the solo rack only if cargo is more important.
  3. Check the total load. Add rider, passenger, clothing, luggage and accessories rather than treating the headline payload as storage capacity.
  4. Measure the charging path. Confirm that both battery packs can be moved safely to the outlet and that indoor charging is permitted where you live.
  5. Price the finished bike. Add the luggage, charging dock, tax, registration, insurance and protective gear you actually need.
  6. Confirm local legality. Check the license, registration, passenger, helmet and insurance rules with the relevant state or national authority.
  7. Verify delivery and incentives. Get a current delivery estimate and confirm the New Rider Program amount in writing; do not rely on stale finance or delivery language.
  8. Arrange a ride if possible. A Maeving RM2 test ride is the best way to assess the seat, throttle response, braking feel, wind exposure and whether the 45-mph mode suits your route.

Verdict

The RM2 is the Maeving that makes the most sense as an everyday motorcycle. The two-seat layout fixes the RM1S’s biggest practical limitation, while the revised rear packaging, stronger braking, adjustable rear suspension and luggage options make the extra capability feel intentional rather than cosmetic.

Its best environment is the city, where the upright riding position, quick low-speed acceleration, removable batteries and simple hub-motor drivetrain matter more than sustained high-speed performance. It is also a more convincing choice for short errands and occasional passenger trips than the single-seat RM1S.

  • Built-In D-Ring Attachment Slot: The base of the bag includes a dedicated slot for D-ring attachments, providing extra storage options or securing your helmet during transport

But “perfect package” needs an asterisk. The $10,995 U.S. starting price is premium, the 80-mile claim depends heavily on mode and conditions, and passenger or cargo use will reduce the margin. Buy the RM2 for its complete urban-electric package and charging flexibility—not because it is cheap, maintenance-free or capable of traveling 80 miles at 70 mph.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between the Maeving RM2 and RM1S?

No. The RM2 is a more practical evolution of the RM1S rather than a radically new motorcycle. Its major changes are the longer two-person seat, passenger footrests, revised rear packaging, upgraded brakes, improved rear suspension, higher payload and additional storage options.

How far can the Maeving RM2 travel on one charge?

Maeving lists up to 80 miles for the U.S. RM2. Its detailed UK figures list up to 90 miles in the 45-mph limited mode and up to 52 miles in Sport mode. Actual range varies with speed, temperature, wind, hills, rider weight, passenger weight and riding style, so 80 miles should not be interpreted as a 70-mph range figure.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How long does the Maeving RM2 take to charge?

Maeving’s UK specification lists six hours from 0–100%, 2.5 hours from 20–80% and four hours from 20–100%. The two batteries can be removed and charged from a standard outlet, or the motorcycle can be plugged in with the batteries installed.

How much does the Maeving RM2 cost in the United States?

The current U.S. product page lists a starting price of $10,995. Accessories, taxes, registration, freight, insurance and protective equipment can increase the final cost, and prices may change.

What license is required for the Maeving RM2?

Maeving’s U.S. materials identify the RM2 with an M1 motorcycle license and require an M1 license for a test ride. State rules can differ, so verify the license, registration, passenger, helmet and insurance requirements with your state DMV and insurer.

Does Maeving offer a new-rider discount?

Maeving’s New Rider Program materials describe a discount for completing an approved motorcycle safety course before ordering, but the displayed amounts conflict between $250 and $500. Confirm the current amount and eligibility directly with Maeving before relying on it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: The Maeving RM2 is a substantially more useful evolution of the RM1S. Its two-up seating, removable batteries, adjustable rear suspension and storage options make it a strong premium urban commuter, but its price and speed-dependent range mean it is best for city riders who understand—and can live with—its limits.
