Bluetooth connected but no sound usually means the phone is connected for calls, while music is being sent through a different—or inactive—audio path. Calls and music use separate Bluetooth functions, so pairing alone does not guarantee Bluetooth music playback. Select the car’s Bluetooth Audio source, enable Media audio on the phone, check both volume controls and the playback destination, then test for competing devices or a broader vehicle fault.
Bluetooth connected but no sound usually means the phone is connected for calls, while music is being sent through a different—or inactive—audio path. Bluetooth hands-free calling and Bluetooth music streaming are separate functions: cars commonly use the Hands-Free Profile (HFP) for calls and the Advanced Audio Distribution Profile (A2DP) for media. A successful pairing therefore does not prove that Bluetooth Audio is supported, enabled, selected, or currently receiving the music stream. Bluetooth SIG’s HFP specification and its profile guidance distinguish these uses.

Work through the checks below while parked. In most cases, the fix is selecting Bluetooth Audio as the vehicle’s source, enabling Media audio on the phone, correcting the volume or playback destination, or disconnecting another device that has claimed the media stream.
First, identify what actually fails

- Play a locally stored song or downloaded podcast.
- Make or receive a phone call.
- Try FM radio, USB, or AUX if your vehicle has those sources.
- Test a navigation voice prompt separately from music.
| What you observe | Most likely direction |
|---|---|
| Calls work, but music is silent | Media audio, A2DP support, source selection, volume, or another device using the stream. |
| Music works, but navigation prompts do not | The navigation app’s voice-output setting or a separate prompt volume—not necessarily a Bluetooth failure. |
| Calls and music both fail | Pairing, compatibility, mute/power, volume, or a broader infotainment problem. |
| Audio works only when Android Auto or CarPlay is connected | The projection system is controlling the audio route, or ordinary Bluetooth media is not supported or selected. |
| FM, USB, AUX, and Bluetooth are all silent | Suspect the vehicle’s audio system, amplifier, speakers, or head unit rather than Bluetooth pairing alone. |
1. Start playback, then raise both volume controls
Begin playing the song or podcast before changing the volume. Raise the phone’s media volume and the car’s media volume independently. A call, navigation prompt, ringtone, and media stream can each have separate volume levels. Also check that neither the phone nor head unit is muted.
If the track timer advances but no sound comes from the speakers, the phone may be streaming successfully while the car is listening to another source. If the timer does not advance, press play in the media app and test another app or a locally stored file. Google’s Android Bluetooth troubleshooting guidance also recommends checking both phone and car volume and confirming that another paired device is not playing the media.
2. Select Bluetooth Audio as the car’s active source
Pairing and source selection are different actions. On the infotainment screen, open a menu labelled Audio, Media, Source, or Entertainment. Choose Bluetooth Audio, BT Audio, or the name of the connected phone. Do not assume that pairing automatically switches the system from FM, USB, AUX, satellite radio, or another phone.
Some systems show a phone in the device list but require a second selection for playback. For example, a BMW owner-manual example separates Bluetooth playback from the general device list, while Ford’s documentation describes choosing the preferred source through the audio-source menu. Exact labels and menu paths vary by vehicle, model year, trim, and infotainment version.
Quick test: select Bluetooth Audio, start a downloaded song, and watch for a track title or playback timer on the car’s display. If the timer moves but the speakers remain silent, continue with the volume, phone-routing, and competing-device checks below.
3. Check the phone’s media-audio permission
Android
Open Settings, select Connected devices or Bluetooth, open the settings for the paired car, and make sure Media audio is enabled. Leave Phone audio enabled if you want hands-free calls. These are separate switches: a phone can allow calls while blocking music.

Menu names differ among Android manufacturers and operating-system versions. If there is no Media audio option, the vehicle may not support Bluetooth music streaming, or the connection may not be negotiating the media profile correctly. Google notes that not every car supports music playback over Bluetooth, so check the vehicle’s manual for its capabilities. Google’s Android instructions provide the general checks.
iPhone
Start playback, open the Now Playing screen or playback controls, tap the audio-output/AirPlay control, and select the vehicle instead of the iPhone, earbuds, speaker, watch, or another available destination. If several Bluetooth accessories are nearby, confirm which one is selected.
Apple recommends checking the active paired device and, when necessary, forgetting and pairing the accessory again. Its Bluetooth troubleshooting guidance and accessory-connection guidance cover those checks. The precise wording can vary by iOS release.
4. Disconnect competing devices
Temporarily disconnect Bluetooth earbuds, headphones, smartwatches, portable speakers, tablets, and other phones. A paired device can still be the active media destination even while the car remains connected for calls. Also check whether a passenger’s phone connected automatically and became the selected media device.
For a clean test, leave only the car and the problem phone connected. Stop playback on every other device, select the car as the phone’s output, and then select Bluetooth Audio in the vehicle.

- Exit Android Auto or CarPlay, disconnect the USB cable, and test ordinary Bluetooth Audio by itself.
- If Bluetooth works alone but not during projection, use the projection system’s own media controls and source selection.
- If wired Android Auto previously worked and then stopped, try a different, short, compatible Android Auto USB cable and check the vehicle or aftermarket receiver’s firmware.
- Restart the infotainment system according to the vehicle manual.
Google’s Android Auto troubleshooting instructions specifically include checking that Android Auto is enabled, restarting the infotainment system, replacing the USB cable when applicable, and checking aftermarket-receiver updates. A cable is not a general cure for Bluetooth silence; it belongs only in a wired Android Auto branch.
6. Restart the connection before deleting pairings
Use this low-risk sequence:
- Stop playback and turn the phone’s Bluetooth off.
- Turn Bluetooth back on and wait for the car to reconnect.
- Restart the phone.
- Turn the car off and perform the infotainment reboot procedure specified in its manual. Some systems reboot with a button combination; do not guess if the manual does not document it.
- Re-select Bluetooth Audio and test a local song.
Android’s official flow begins with cycling Bluetooth, confirming pairing, and restarting devices; Android Auto has a separate recommendation to restart the car’s infotainment system. These steps reset a stuck audio route without immediately removing contacts, call history permissions, favorites, or device-specific settings.
7. Forget and re-pair both sides
Use this after source selection, volume, media-audio, and restart checks fail:
- In the phone’s Bluetooth settings, forget or remove the vehicle.
- In the car’s Bluetooth/device menu, delete the phone from paired devices. Remove old, unused phones if the memory is full.
- Turn Bluetooth off and on, then refresh the vehicle’s device list.
- Pair the phone again from the car’s pairing menu.
- Accept the prompts for contacts, call history, and media access as appropriate.
- Select Bluetooth Audio and test again.
Google recommends clearing unused phones from the vehicle and forgetting the previous car entry before refreshing and pairing again. Apple likewise documents forgetting a Bluetooth accessory before adding it again. This can erase contacts, call history permissions, favorites, and saved device settings, so it should not be the first response to a source-selection mistake.
8. Investigate updates only when the symptoms point there
A phone or head-unit update can expose a compatibility problem, especially with an older infotainment system. Check for an update from the phone manufacturer and the vehicle or head-unit manufacturer when the issue began immediately after an update, affects one phone consistently, or reproduces with a known-compatible setup.
Do not install a generic driver updater for a phone-to-car Bluetooth problem. Do not assume that a recent phone update is the cause without recording the phone model, operating-system version, vehicle model and year, head-unit version, and whether another phone behaves the same way. For aftermarket receivers, Google specifically advises checking the manufacturer’s firmware updates in its Android Auto guidance.

Use the results to narrow the fault
- Calls work but music does not: enable Media audio, select Bluetooth Audio, check the phone’s output destination, disconnect competing devices, and test another media app.
- Music works but navigation prompts do not: inspect the navigation app’s voice-output setting and raise the vehicle’s navigation or prompt volume separately.
- Calls and music both fail: verify pairing, compatibility, volume, mute status, and whether the head unit is powered and responsive.
- Audio works with another phone: focus on the original phone’s settings, operating-system behavior, or device-specific compatibility.
- Audio works only through USB projection: troubleshoot Android Auto or CarPlay and its cable or wireless connection rather than treating it as ordinary Bluetooth.
- Every source is silent: test FM, USB, and AUX. If all remain silent, the fault is probably vehicle-side.
If the built-in Bluetooth audio still will not work
An accessory makes sense only after confirming that the car’s built-in Bluetooth media path is unavailable, unsupported, or unreliable. It is not a repair for a defective head unit, and it is unnecessary if selecting Bluetooth Audio or enabling Media audio fixes the problem.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteOlder cars or failed built-in Bluetooth: FM transmitter
A Bluetooth FM transmitter for car receives audio from the phone and rebroadcasts it over an unused FM frequency that the car radio can tune to. Manufacturer documentation for Scosche’s BTFreq describes Bluetooth phone streaming to the vehicle’s FM stereo, hands-free calling, 12-volt power, USB charging, and—on certain models—an AUX output. This is a workaround, not a restoration of the factory Bluetooth system. It requires a reasonably clear FM frequency and may sound less clean than direct AUX or factory Bluetooth.
If your car has AUX
If the vehicle has a working 3.5-mm AUX input, a Bluetooth AUX adapter for car can provide a simple alternative: the phone connects wirelessly to the adapter, and the adapter feeds the car through AUX. Select AUX as the vehicle source, power the adapter, and check both phone and car volume. This option does not help if the AUX jack is absent, damaged, or disabled, and some adapters require separate charging.
When replacement is justified
If the factory head unit has no Bluetooth media support, repeatedly fails across all sources, or needs repair that is not economical, consider a Bluetooth aftermarket car stereo. Treat this as an installation decision, not a quick Bluetooth fix. Confirm vehicle-specific dash fit, wiring harnesses, antenna adapters, steering-wheel controls, backup-camera integration, amplifier compatibility, and whether professional installation is needed. Test the car’s existing sources and consult the vehicle manufacturer, dealer, or qualified automotive-audio technician before buying.
When to stop troubleshooting
Seek vehicle-side diagnosis if FM radio, USB, AUX, and Bluetooth are all silent; another phone produces the same result; or the infotainment display freezes, repeatedly reboots, or shows no audio output regardless of source. Ford’s guidance directs owners to dealer diagnosis when the stereo produces no sound from any source, a principle that generally applies across brands subject to the vehicle’s own manual. Ford’s audio-system guidance explains this escalation point.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Possible vehicle-side causes include a muted or failed head unit, amplifier or speaker fault, an infotainment software problem, or a source-specific compatibility limitation. A technician can identify those more safely than repeatedly deleting pairings or changing unrelated phone developer settings.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why does Bluetooth work for calls but not music in my car?
Because calls and music use different Bluetooth functions. A car may connect through the Hands-Free Profile for calls while Bluetooth media streaming through A2DP is disabled, unsupported, routed to another device, or not selected as the active source.
How do I enable Bluetooth music in my car?
Open the phone’s Bluetooth settings, select the paired car, and enable Media audio. Then select Bluetooth Audio or the phone’s name in the car’s Audio, Media, Source, or Entertainment menu. Labels vary by vehicle and phone.

One-click scans. No signup required.
Will a Bluetooth AUX adapter fix a car with no Bluetooth music?
Yes, but only if the car has a working AUX input. The phone connects to the adapter over Bluetooth, while the adapter sends sound through the 3.5-mm AUX connection. Select AUX as the car’s source.
When is no Bluetooth sound a car stereo problem?
If FM, USB, AUX, and Bluetooth are all silent, or another phone has the same problem, the issue is probably vehicle-side. Have the manufacturer, dealer, or a qualified automotive-audio technician inspect the infotainment system.
The Bottom Line
Connected does not necessarily mean connected for music. First select Bluetooth Audio in the car, enable Media audio on the phone, choose the correct playback destination, raise both media volumes, and disconnect competing devices. Restart and re-pair only after those checks. If every audio source is silent or another phone fails too, pursue vehicle-side diagnosis; use an FM transmitter or AUX adapter only as a clearly labeled workaround when the factory media path cannot be used.
