If a wheel-alignment reading is out of specification after strut work, do not assume the strut or an adjustment bolt is automatically the fix. Check the vehicle’s factory specifications and ride height, inspect for worn or damaged parts, repair confirmed faults, then align the suspension using the vehicle’s specified procedure. A reading that changes substantially while adjusting another angle—especially camber or caster changing as toe is set—can point to looseness or a bent component.
What camber, caster and toe tell you
Alignment readings describe different parts of wheel and steering geometry. Their target values and adjustment provisions vary by vehicle, so generic angle numbers are not a substitute for factory specifications.
- Camber is the wheel’s inward or outward tilt when viewed from the front. Some MacPherson strut designs use an eccentric bolt at the strut-to-knuckle connection to adjust it. [Mevotech]
- Caster is the steering axis’s forward or rearward tilt when viewed from the side. Some designs allow adjustment by moving the upper strut in its chassis mount; others use a different provision or have no adjustment. [Mevotech]
- Toe describes whether the wheels point inward or outward when viewed from above. Tie-rod length is a common front-toe adjustment, but the correct procedure depends on the vehicle. [Mevotech]
Uneven tire wear, pulling, wandering, or an off-center steering wheel can accompany an alignment or suspension problem, but none identifies a failed component by itself. Excessive toe can accelerate tire-edge wear. [Mevotech]
Why alignment readings can be wrong or unstable
A bent part or looseness
If setting toe causes a substantial change in camber or caster, stop compensating with repeated adjustments and inspect the suspension. On a MacPherson system, a bent ball joint or strut shaft can cause this kind of cross-talk; looseness can also make readings unreliable. [Mevotech]

Incorrect ride height
Ride height is part of the alignment baseline. Weak springs or an unevenly sitting vehicle can shift alignment angles, and the available adjustment range may not be enough to bring readings into specification until ride height is corrected. [Mevotech]
Normal adjustment needs—or a design with no adjustment
Some strut-to-knuckle arrangements allow camber correction with an eccentric bolt, and some upper mounts permit caster adjustment. These are design-specific provisions, not universal MacPherson strut features. A camber bolt kit is appropriate only when it fits the vehicle and the service information allows that correction; it should not be used to mask a bent part, incorrect ride height, or joint play. Diagnose the cause before adjusting
- Identify the vehicle and specifications. Record year, make, model, configuration, and suspension modifications. Use the factory service information for alignment targets, inspection limits, adjustment points, and fastener procedures. Do not apply a generic angle value to an unidentified vehicle. [Mevotech]
- Check tires and ride height. Confirm tire condition and inflation, then measure ride height using the manufacturer’s method. A low or uneven vehicle can change the geometry baseline. [Mevotech]
- Inspect steering and suspension parts. Look for abnormal wear, leakage, damage, looseness, or movement at the strut and mount, steering knuckle, ball joints, control-arm bushings, tie rods, and wheel-end components as applicable. Follow the service manual’s diagnostic procedure. Ball-joint play can affect alignment and handling. [Mevotech] [MOOG]
- Check for chassis looseness. A consistent road test, when safe and appropriate, and a suitable static check such as a dry-park test can help reveal worn or loose parts. Support the vehicle safely and use the inspection method specified for it. [Mevotech]
- Repair confirmed faults first. Correct worn or damaged components and any ride-height problem before trying to bring the readings into range. An adjustment kit cannot repair a bent component or remove joint play. [Mevotech]
- Align and compare readings. Use the vehicle’s specified adjustment sequence and provisions, and compare the before-and-after readings. If the angles will not stay stable or reach specification, reassess for damage, looseness, ride-height issues, or a lack of adjustment provision rather than forcing an adjustment. [Mevotech]
Should you get an alignment after replacing struts?
Strut replacement can affect alignment, so check alignment after strut or relevant steering and suspension work. Monroe recommends alignment after this work, with exceptions when the vehicle has no alignment provisions or the work does not affect the angles. [Monroe] Follow the vehicle repair manual for removal, installation, torque values, and any required post-installation checks; Monroe’s guidance defers those procedures to the vehicle manual. An out-of-range camber or caster reading is a reason to investigate, not proof that a strut has failed. KYB lists leaking fluid, cracked mounts, and a bent piston rod among visible indicators of strut problems. Consider those findings alongside a consistent road-test result and a full inspection; an alignment printout alone cannot establish strut failure. [KYB]
