In the U.S., the M550i and M5 are not current same-year new-car rivals: BMW’s cited U.S. lineup does not list a new M550i, so the practical comparison is a prior-generation M550i—such as the 2023 model—to BMW’s current M5. The M5 is quicker by BMW’s published figures and adds plug-in-hybrid driving; the M550i remains a V8-powered xDrive sedan. Which makes more sense depends on the exact model year, used-car price and condition, and whether you can use the M5’s charging capability.
Are the M550i and M5 direct new-car competitors?
No—not in the U.S. lineup reviewed. BMW USA’s current 5 Series overview lists the 2027 530i, 530i xDrive, and 540i xDrive, while its technical-data page also shows 2026 models such as the 550e xDrive and i5. Neither page lists a current M550i. The M550i belongs in a used-car comparison; check the model year and the individual car rather than treating it as a new alternative to the M5. BMW USA’s 5 Series overview and technical data can help confirm the lineup for the year you are shopping.
How do their published performance figures compare?
BMW lists the current M5 at 717 hp, 738 lb-ft of torque, and 3.4 seconds for 0–60 mph. The 2023 U.S. 5 Series brochure gives the M550i xDrive a 3.9-second 0–60 mph claim and identifies its 4.4-liter V8. These are manufacturer claims from different model years and source contexts, not results from a controlled head-to-head test. BMW also cautions that acceleration results can vary and are intended for comparison. BMW USA’s M5 technical data and the 2023 U.S. 5 Series brochure provide the cited figures.

BMW Mexico’s 2023 M550i xDrive technical sheet lists 530 hp and 750 Nm, but those are Mexico-market specifications. They should not be used as verified output for a U.S. car without confirming its model year and market specification. BMW Mexico’s 2023 M550i xDrive technical sheet is the source for those figures.

What changes when the M5 is a plug-in hybrid?
The M5’s 717 hp and 738 lb-ft are maximum system figures for its hybrid powertrain, not figures to compare as though they came from an otherwise equivalent V8-only car. BMW describes the 2025 M5 as offering Hybrid, Electric, and eControl modes. Electric mode can drive without the combustion engine when the high-voltage battery has sufficient charge, but BMW says the engine may start in some situations. BMW’s M5 overview describes the modes and operating conditions.
BMW Group USA projected approximately 25 miles of fully electric range in its June 25, 2024 M5 launch announcement. That is a launch-era projection, not a current EPA-certified range claim for every model year. Confirm the specific car’s official range and equipment rather than assuming the projection applies. The same release listed a 2025 launch base MSRP of $119,500 plus $1,175 destination and handling; that historical launch price is not a current quote or transaction price. BMW Group characterized the change as “The BMW M5 is powering into a new era.” BMW Group USA’s June 25, 2024 launch release contains the statement, projected range, performance figures, and launch pricing.

How do traction, suspension, and charging affect daily use?
All-wheel drive
BMW describes the 2025 M5’s M xDrive as an all-wheel-drive system that varies drive-force distribution between the front and rear axles in response to conditions. The 2023 M550i xDrive is also an all-wheel-drive sedan, but the shared xDrive name does not make their powertrains or behavior identical. BMW’s 2025 M5 overview explains its M xDrive system.
Ride and suspension
For the 2025 M5, BMW says adaptive M suspension uses electronically controlled dampers with Comfort and Sport settings and adjusts damper mapping to driving conditions. This is useful context when weighing performance against everyday comfort, but it does not establish a direct ride-quality comparison with a particular used M550i. BMW’s M5 overview describes the suspension.

Charging access
BMW’s 2025 M5 FAQ states support for AC charging up to 11 kW. Charging times and equipment depend on the exact vehicle and setup, so verify the car’s specifications and your charging arrangement. If you cannot charge regularly, the M5’s electric mode may be less useful; BMW’s operating note also makes clear that electric-only driving depends on sufficient battery charge. BMW’s 2025 M5 FAQ gives the AC charging limit.

Consider the M550i if you want a prior-generation V8 sedan
The M550i is the used-car route to the 2023 brochure’s 4.4-liter V8 and xDrive configuration. Evaluate the exact car’s year, condition, equipment, and asking price; the brochure’s acceleration claim does not establish what a used example is worth or how it has been maintained.

Consider the M5 if you want BMW’s current high-performance sedan and hybrid modes
The M5 pairs BMW’s stated 717 hp system output and 3.4-second 0–60 mph claim with plug-in-hybrid operation and M xDrive. The 5,390 lb curb weight listed by BMW is also relevant when considering the car as a whole rather than judging it only by acceleration. Check the exact model year’s specifications, charging details, and price.
Make the comparison car-specific
Before deciding, compare the actual M550i’s model year and condition with the exact M5 you are considering, then weigh purchase price, powertrain, acceleration claims, curb weight, drivetrain, and access to charging. The cited sources do not establish current used asking prices, ownership costs, reliability, maintenance, insurance, or a comparative fuel-economy result, so those should be verified for the vehicles and market you are evaluating.
