Lucid Motors announced a U.S. workforce reduction on May 24, 2024. TechCrunch reported at the time that it affected about 400 workers, or roughly 6% of the workforce. The company said the cuts covered employees and contractors across job levels but excluded hourly manufacturing and logistics workers. Lucid later began Gravity production in December 2024, making the “ahead of launch” framing historical.
Why did Lucid cut about 400 jobs?
Lucid described the May 2024 action as an effort to optimize resources and keep costs under control. Then-CEO Peter Rawlinson tied that discipline to the company’s plans for the Gravity SUV, saying in the May 24 employee announcement: “I’m confident Lucid will deliver the world’s best SUV and dramatically expand our total addressable market, but we aren’t generating revenue from the program yet.” He added: “As always we must remain vigilant about costs.” Lucid’s SEC-filed announcement records the company’s stated rationale; it does not establish that the Gravity program alone caused the layoffs or that the cuts improved Lucid’s financial position.

Who was affected by the 2024 reduction?
Lucid said the reduction applied to U.S. employees and contractors at all levels, including leadership and mid-level management. Hourly manufacturing and logistics workers were excluded. The announcement also said affected employees would be offered severance, health benefits and outplacement services.
The company’s filing did not specify a headcount. The figures of about 400 workers and roughly 6% of the workforce come from TechCrunch’s May 24, 2024 report, so they should be understood as contemporaneous reported estimates rather than numbers in Lucid’s filing.

When did the Lucid Gravity launch?
In May 2024, Lucid said it aimed to start Gravity production at the end of that year. The company later reported that production began in December 2024 and described the SUV as arriving on the road in late 2024. The launch is therefore a completed milestone, not an upcoming event. Lucid disclosed a separate workforce-reduction plan in June 2026. Its SEC filing said that plan affected approximately 18% of the company’s then-current U.S. workforce and estimated annualized savings of approximately $158 million. Those figures belong to the 2026 plan, not the May 2024 reduction; the available sources do not establish like-for-like headcounts for the two events. Lucid’s June 2026 filing describes the later action.

Lucid’s August 2026 quarterly update described an operational reset and said it was testing Gravity production-validation vehicles in its robotaxi program. That later update adds context to the company’s subsequent plans but does not alter the scope or stated reasoning of the 2024 announcement. Lucid’s August 2026 quarterly release covers that update.
