Lucid CEO’s $379 Million Pay Figure Wasn’t a Salary—and Wasn’t the Highest

A survey put Peter Rawlinson’s 2022 compensation near $379 million, but it was not a salary—and whether it ranked first depends on the peer group and measure.

The much-cited $379 million figure for Lucid CEO Peter Rawlinson refers to reported 2022 compensation, not his annual salary or a $379 million cash payment. A 2023 account of an Automotive News/Equilar survey put him below Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang overall, while describing Rawlinson as the highest-paid CEO among the automotive companies in its comparison. Those are different rankings with different peer groups.

What did the $379 million figure represent?

Fortune reported that the Automotive News/Equilar survey put Rawlinson’s 2022 compensation at $379,029,183. That is a survey-reported compensation figure, not a statement that Lucid paid him that amount as salary or cash in 2022.

Lucid’s 2022 proxy statement presents compensation in distinct categories. It lists Rawlinson’s base salary as $407,756, alongside $16,652,592 in option awards, $864,670 in stock awards, and $40,872,951 in non-equity incentive compensation. The filing also reports amounts realized when awards were exercised or vested in separate tables. These figures use different accounting treatments and can reflect awards granted in other years; they should not be added together or treated as interchangeable with the survey’s $379 million figure. See Lucid’s 2022 proxy statement.

Was Rawlinson the highest-paid automotive CEO?

The answer depends on the comparison. Fortune’s account of the Automotive News/Equilar survey said Rawlinson’s reported 2022 figure trailed Jensen Huang’s overall, but described Rawlinson as the highest-paid automotive CEO in its comparison. Fortune also characterized him as highest among U.S. publicly traded carmakers.

Those claims do not establish that Rawlinson was the highest-paid executive in every company associated with the global auto industry. The complete survey universe and methodology are not available in the cited account, so the ranking is best stated as a result of that survey’s comparison, not a definitive all-industry or worldwide ranking.

How did other automaker CEOs compare in 2022?

For context, the Associated Press and Equilar reported 2022 compensation of $28.98 million for General Motors CEO Mary Barra and nearly $21 million for Ford CEO Jim Farley. AP noted that comparisons are complicated by differences in company structure and stock awards. These examples illustrate the scale of Rawlinson’s survey figure, but do not by themselves establish a ranking across all automakers. See AP’s 2023 report on CEO compensation.

What does Lucid’s latest reported compensation show?

Lucid’s 2026 proxy, filed April 23, 2026, covers fiscal 2025 and separates reported compensation by measure and executive role. Its Summary Compensation Table lists $9,708,987 for interim CEO Marc Winterhoff and $3,473,069 for former CEO Peter Rawlinson. Rawlinson transitioned out of the CEO role during 2025, so these figures are not full-year compensation for two executives serving in identical roles for the same period.

The same filing reports SEC pay-versus-performance “compensation actually paid” of negative $278,597 for Winterhoff and negative $399,922 for Rawlinson. This is an adjusted disclosure measure, not salary or cash paid; it can differ substantially from the Summary Compensation Table total. The categories answer different questions, so comparisons should name the measure used. Details are in Lucid’s 2026 proxy statement.

Why compensation rankings can change

A headline ranking is meaningful only when its comparison uses the same period, compensation measure, peer group, equity valuation method, and role tenure. In particular, stock and option awards may be counted at grant, vesting, or exercise; those dates can produce very different figures. Interim service or a midyear leadership change also makes annual totals harder to compare.

A separate 2026 AP/Equilar survey reported median 2025 CEO pay of $17.7 million among 337 qualifying executives at S&P 500 companies. The sample included executives who had served at least two full years, using proxy filings submitted from January 1 through April 30, 2026; stock and options were valued at grant date, and eventual realized value can differ. That figure is useful methodological context, not a direct comparison with the 2022 Automotive News/Equilar automotive survey. See AP’s 2026 report on 2025 CEO pay.

What to take from the headline

Rawlinson’s reported $379 million is a striking 2022 survey figure, but calling it his “salary” is inaccurate. The claim that it was not the highest is also incomplete unless the ranking names its scope: the cited survey put him below Huang overall while placing him at the top of its automotive comparison. Lucid’s own filings show why compensation totals must be read alongside their accounting definitions.
