Low Tire Pressure Warning Light: What It Means and What to Do

A steady tire pressure light calls for a gauge check and inflation to the vehicle’s cold-pressure recommendation. A flashing-then-steady light may signal a TPMS malfunction.

A steady low tire pressure warning means your vehicle’s tire pressure monitoring system (TPMS) has detected significant underinflation in at least one tire. Check the pressure with a gauge as soon as practical, inflate to the vehicle’s recommended cold pressure, and treat a flashing-then-steady light as a possible TPMS fault rather than a routine low-pressure alert.

What the low tire pressure light means

The common warning symbol looks like a cross-section of a tire with an exclamation mark; some vehicles show a top view of a car with its tires. When it illuminates steadily, the system has detected pressure below its warning threshold. It may not tell you which tire is low, and a tire can be underinflated without looking obviously flat. Use a pressure gauge rather than relying on appearance. NHTSA explains the warning and tire-safety checks.

TPMS designs vary. A direct system uses pressure sensors in the tires; an indirect system uses wheel-speed and other vehicle sensors to infer a pressure problem. The vehicle processes those signals and displays a warning. Consult the owner’s manual for your car’s specific display, pressure readings, warning thresholds, and reset procedure.

What to do when the light comes on

If a tire looks damaged or the vehicle handles differently

Pull over somewhere safe and follow the owner’s manual’s emergency guidance. A visibly flat or damaged tire, or a change in handling, deserves immediate attention. Instructions can be vehicle-specific: for example, Tesla’s guidance for its “air pressure in tires very low” alert says to pull over safely and check for a flat; that is not a universal procedure for every vehicle.

AstroAI Digital Tire Pressure Gauge 150PSI, ±1PSI Accuracy for Car Truck
  • Accurate, Dependable Readings: Factory‑calibrated to ±1 PSI, so you can confidently match your vehicle’s recommended PSI (check the door jamb sticker). Ideal for monthly checks and road trips — consistent results every time, cold or warm.
  • Bright Backlit Display & Nozzle Light: The illuminated nozzle helps you find the valve stem in the dark, while the backlit LCD makes readings crystal clear in dim garages or at night. No more squinting or holding a flashlight.
  • 4 Measurement Units, One Button: Quickly switch among PSI, Bar, Kgf/cm², and KPA with a single press. No complex settings — just press and cycle to your preferred unit. Perfect for drivers who need multiple scales.
  • Broad Compatibility for Everyday Vehicles: 0–150 PSI covers cars, SUVs, motorcycles, and spare tires (often 60 PSI). Fits standard Schrader valves; just press on for a reading.
  • Auto‑Off to Extend Battery Life: The gauge automatically powers down after 30 seconds of inactivity, so the included 2*AAA batteries last longer. Always ready for your monthly checks without surprise dead batteries.

If there is no obvious damage

  1. Check all tires with a gauge. Do this as soon as practical; the warning may not identify the affected tire. Check the spare too if your vehicle has one.
  2. Find the correct pressure. Use the driver-side Tire and Loading Information label or the owner’s manual. Do not use the maximum pressure molded on the tire sidewall as the vehicle’s recommended setting. Front and rear recommendations may differ. NHTSA’s tire guidance and its TPMS written instructions explain these checks.
  3. Add air to the recommended pressure. The placard value is a cold-pressure target. If you discover low pressure after driving, NHTSA says it is safer to inflate to the recommended cold pressure shown on the placard than to continue driving significantly underinflated. Recheck and adjust when the tires are cold; do not release air from warm tires just to match the cold-pressure number.
  4. Watch what happens next. The warning may take driving or a system measurement cycle to clear after inflation. Follow the manual’s reset or relearn instructions if needed. If pressure falls again, damage is visible, or a system fault appears, arrange an inspection by a tire professional or dealer.

Why cold weather can turn the light on

Air pressure falls as tire temperature drops. A tire inflated in warmer conditions can therefore fall below the TPMS warning threshold after a cold snap. NHTSA notes that the warning can appear briefly on cold mornings and go out as the tires warm during driving or as ambient temperatures rise. A 2026 Hyundai owner’s manual also describes cold weather triggering the telltale after tires were adjusted in warm conditions. NHTSA tire guidance includes advice on cold-weather warnings.

A light that goes out as the tires warm does not prove that cold pressure is correct. Measure and adjust when cold. For this check, a cold tire is one on a vehicle that has not been driven for at least three hours.

Steady light versus flashing light

Indicator behavior What it can mean What to do
Steady warning The TPMS has detected significant underinflation in one or more tires. Check all tires with a gauge and inflate to the vehicle’s recommended cold pressure.
Flashes for about a minute, then stays on Commonly indicates a TPMS malfunction rather than simply low pressure. NHTSA describes a flash of about 60–90 seconds followed by an illuminated lamp; the federal standard describes approximately one minute before continuous illumination. Check the manual and arrange system inspection. Do not assume that adding air will fix a malfunction.

Warning behavior and wording vary by vehicle, so confirm the meaning in your owner’s manual. NHTSA says U.S. model-year 2008 and newer passenger cars, light trucks, and vans are required to have TPMS; some 2006–2007 vehicles also have it. This regulatory requirement does not establish what is fitted to every vehicle class or in every country. See NHTSA’s tire-safety information and the federal TPMS standard.

How to check tire pressure routinely

  • Check all tires at least monthly, as NHTSA recommends, and do it when they are cold—after the vehicle has been parked for at least three hours.
  • Use an accurate gauge and keep one in the vehicle.
  • Read the recommended pressure on the vehicle’s tire-and-loading label or in the manual. The tire sidewall’s pressure marking is a maximum rating, not the carmaker’s target.
  • Include the spare if one is fitted; its pressure may also need checking.

TPMS is a warning aid, not a replacement for routine gauge checks. Underinflation can reduce fuel efficiency and tread life and may affect handling and stopping ability, according to NHTSA’s written TPMS instructions.
