Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsLocked your key in the car? First check whether anyone is trapped or in danger—if so, call 911. Otherwise, use the safest authorized option available: a pre-enabled vehicle app, a trusted spare, roadside assistance, or an automotive locksmith.
If someone is trapped in the vehicle or you are in immediate danger, call 911 or your local emergency number now. For a child left alone in a locked car, NHTSA says to act immediately and call 911. Do not assume shade, a cracked window, or cool weather makes a parked car safe for a child, vulnerable adult, or pet.
If nobody is in danger, the fastest safe solution is usually one you already authorized: a connected-car app, a spare key held by someone you trust, roadside assistance, or a qualified automotive locksmith. Skip improvised entry attempts; modern doors, glass, airbags, weather seals, and electronic locks are expensive to damage and can injure you.
1. Treat an occupied locked vehicle as an emergency
Call emergency services if a child, vulnerable adult, or pet is locked inside, or if the location creates an immediate personal-safety risk. Tell the dispatcher the vehicle’s location, make, model, color, and that an occupant is trapped.

For a routine lockout, do not call police simply to gain access faster. Move to a visible, safer place away from traffic if you can, keep your phone charged, and begin the access steps below.
2. Gather the details a dispatcher will need
Before calling for help, have these ready:
- Your exact or approximate location, including a nearby business, cross street, parking level, or mile marker.
- The vehicle’s make, model, color, and model year if known.
- Whether the key is visible in the cabin, locked in the trunk, lost, broken, or not responding.
- Your driver’s license, registration, insurance card, or other proof you are authorized to access the vehicle.
Roadside providers commonly ask for location and vehicle details, and a technician or locksmith may verify identity before attempting entry. If your ID is inside the vehicle, say that when you request service and have any available ownership information ready.
3. Use only low-risk access options you already have
Check the normal exterior doors and hatch once, calmly. A door may have been left unlocked, but repeatedly pulling handles, forcing trim, or trying to reach through an opening can cause damage.
Try your manufacturer’s app only if it was set up before the lockout
Many newer vehicles offer a remote-unlock feature through a manufacturer connected-services app. It works only when the vehicle and account support it and the service was enrolled and activated beforehand. For example, Ford says remote unlock requires the vehicle to be added to the Ford app and to have an equipped, activated modem; it is not available on every vehicle.
Open the app, confirm you are signed in to the correct account, and look for its documented remote-unlock control. If it is unavailable or fails, do not rely on repeated requests as a rescue plan—move on to roadside help.
Arrange delivery of a separately stored spare
If a trusted family member, friend, or nearby co-owner holds your spare key, this can be the least complicated option. Ask them to meet you somewhere safe or use a delivery option that you trust and that is appropriate for the situation.

- Durable airbag: easy to lift tire, high hardness, good support
- Pull rod: Easily repair dents in cars
- Screwdriver: Easily remove engine screws
A spare kept separately with a trusted person is generally a better prevention strategy than leaving an unrestricted spare hidden on the vehicle. A key hidden on the car can create a theft risk.
4. Call the roadside service you already pay for
Check the roadside-assistance channel attached to your vehicle, membership, or policy:
- Your automaker’s roadside program or connected-services support line.
- A motor club such as AAA.
- Your auto insurer’s roadside-assistance benefit.
- A pay-per-use roadside provider if you have no included coverage.
Use the contact method shown in your current membership app, insurance app, policy documents, or vehicle app. Benefits are not interchangeable: eligibility, dispatch limits, reimbursement rules, and location availability depend on your plan and provider.
AAA states that its lockout service is available to members 24/7 in the United States and Canada, and that its technician will attempt vehicle entry. It is still an attempt, not a guarantee; AAA may help arrange a locksmith or tow when entry cannot be achieved. Its technicians use professional equipment and do not break a window unless there is an emergency.
Insurance roadside benefits also vary. As one example, GEICO describes lockout coverage subject to its terms and a stated limit for certain covered losses, while replacement keys and fobs are excluded. Verify your own policy before assuming a lockout dispatch or a new fob will be covered.
5. Call an automotive locksmith when the problem is more than access
Choose a qualified automotive locksmith when roadside assistance is unavailable, cannot open the vehicle, or the key situation is more complicated than a key visible on the seat. Common escalation cases include:

- Vinyl hand grip for ease of use
- Part: Emergency Door Lock Opener
- Tool can be reshaped to accommodate thickness of doors and lock location
- The key or fob is lost or stolen.
- The key is broken, water-damaged, or electronically unresponsive.
- The key is locked in the trunk and ordinary access will not release it.
- You need a replacement key or fob, cutting, programming, or anti-theft-system work.
Automotive locksmithing involves modern vehicle-opening methods as well as electronic anti-theft systems and key programming. Tell the provider the exact vehicle details and the actual problem so they can bring the appropriate equipment. Expect them to confirm that you are authorized to access the vehicle.
A dealer can also be appropriate for a vehicle-specific replacement or programming issue, especially when the manufacturer requires dealer tooling or account verification. It may not be the quickest option outside business hours, so ask whether a mobile automotive locksmith can handle your make and model.
What not to do during a routine lockout
Do not follow online break-in videos or improvise door-entry methods. Attempts to force a door, window, lock, trim, or weather seal can cause serious injury and expensive damage. They can also interfere with side-curtain airbags, wiring, sensors, or the locking system.
Do not break a window for a routine lockout. Window breaking is an emergency decision for immediate danger, not a convenience shortcut. If an occupant is at risk, call 911 and follow the dispatcher’s instructions.

That is a real professional-tool category, but it is not an “easy” do-it-yourself answer for an untrained person. Using entry tools without authorization, vehicle-specific knowledge, and professional training can injure someone, damage the vehicle, and create legal problems. For your own routine lockout, use an authorized provider instead.
Choose the right next call
| Situation | Best next step | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Child, vulnerable adult, or pet trapped inside | Call 911/local emergency services | Safety outranks property access. |
| Key visible inside; connected app was enabled | Use the manufacturer app | It may unlock the vehicle remotely if your vehicle and account are eligible. |
| Key visible inside; trusted person has spare | Arrange safe spare-key delivery | Low risk and no vehicle entry attempt is needed. |
| Key visible inside; you have roadside coverage | Request lockout service | A trained provider can attempt authorized entry. |
| Key lost, broken, in trunk, or fob has failed | Call an automotive locksmith or dealer | You may need a replacement, programming, or model-specific service. |
| Roadside service cannot open the vehicle | Ask about locksmith or tow options | Entry is not guaranteed on every vehicle. |
Prevent the next lockout
- Keep a spare separately: Leave it with a trusted person rather than concealing it on the vehicle.
- Enroll before you need it: If your vehicle supports connected services, set up the manufacturer app, confirm remote features, and keep account recovery details current.
- Use a Bluetooth tracker for misplaced keys: A tracker can help locate keys you lost nearby. It cannot unlock a vehicle when the key is visibly trapped inside.
- Check replacement compatibility: If you buy a spare key or fob, verify exact vehicle compatibility and whether cutting, programming, or dealer authorization is required before purchasing.
- Save your assistance contact: Keep your automaker, insurer, motor club, or trusted locksmith contact in your phone while you still have access to the vehicle.
A locked-in key is frustrating, but it does not need to become a damaged door, broken window, or unsafe roadside situation. Use authorized access first, then roadside assistance or a qualified automotive locksmith if needed.

Frequently Asked Questions
Should I call 911 if I locked my keys in the car?
No. Call 911 or local emergency services when a child, vulnerable adult, pet, or anyone else is trapped and at risk, or when there is another immediate safety threat. A routine lockout should normally go to roadside assistance or an automotive locksmith.
Can my phone unlock my car?
Only if your vehicle supports remote unlocking and the connected service was set up in advance. Eligibility depends on the make, model, equipment, activated service, and account status.
Does insurance cover a car lockout?
Possibly, but do not assume it is included. Roadside terms, limits, locations, and exclusions are plan-specific, and replacement keys or fobs may not be covered even when a lockout dispatch is.
When do I need a locksmith instead of roadside assistance?
A visible key usually calls for authorized vehicle entry. A lost, broken, unresponsive, or trunk-locked key can require a qualified automotive locksmith or dealer because replacement and programming may be necessary.
Will a Bluetooth key tracker help when my key is locked inside?
No. A Bluetooth tracker may help you find misplaced keys, but it cannot unlock a vehicle with the key inside.
The Bottom Line
For a routine lockout, use a pre-enabled vehicle app, a trusted spare, roadside assistance, or an automotive locksmith. If anyone is trapped or in danger, call 911 immediately.
