LiDAR Adoption in Automotive Applications: What’s in Use and What’s Planned

Automotive LiDAR is appearing in driver-assistance prototypes and planned autonomous trucks, but the evidence does not show that most cars have it or that LiDAR alone makes a vehicle self-driving.

Yes, LiDAR is being adopted in automotive programs, but adoption is uneven and the evidence does not show that most cars have it. The clearest examples are a Nissan driver-assistance prototype planned for selected Japanese production vehicles and a LiDAR supplier chosen for a planned Level 4 autonomous-truck program. Neither announcement proves broad deployment or makes LiDAR a requirement for autonomous driving.

Where automotive LiDAR is being adopted

The maturity of a program matters: a demonstrated prototype, a supplier selection and a vehicle already on sale are different kinds of evidence. These examples show two distinct automotive applications, not a market-wide fitment rate.

Application Program status and geography LiDAR’s described role Automation context
Passenger-vehicle driver assistance Nissan demonstrated its next-generation ProPILOT prototype in central Tokyo in September 2025. The company plans to launch it on selected mass-production vehicles in Japan within FY27; the announcement is a plan, not confirmation that the system is already on sale. Nissan’s program description Part of Ground Truth Perception, alongside cameras and radar. Nissan describes the system as SAE Level 2 driver assistance. The driver must monitor it and remains responsible for vehicle control.
Autonomous commercial trucking Daimler Truck and Torc announced on December 2, 2025, that Innoviz was selected as the short-range LiDAR partner for planned series-production Freightliner Cascadia trucks. The program is intended for North American highway and regional routes; the announcement does not establish a deployed fleet count. Daimler Truck’s announcement Short-range LiDAR is intended to cover close-proximity situations within a suite that also includes long-range LiDAR, cameras and radar. The program is planned for SAE Level 4 automated trucks operating within a defined route domain.

These examples do not establish which LiDAR-equipped passenger cars are currently available to buy in every market. The Nissan evidence is a prototype and future production plan; the truck evidence is a supplier selection for a planned program.

What LiDAR contributes to a vehicle system

LiDAR senses surroundings using laser light and supplies information about objects and their positions to the vehicle’s perception and data-fusion systems. Its contribution depends on the sensor, its placement and how the vehicle combines its output with other sensors; the cited programs do not establish one standard configuration for all automakers.

  • [Anti-glare] Effectively resist ambient light interference, first-class filter processing technology, meet the use in 80000Lux strong light environment, and can be used in various indoor and outdoor environments.

LiDAR is part of a sensor suite

Nissan’s prototype uses 11 cameras, five radar sensors and one next-generation LiDAR sensor. Nissan says LiDAR can detect objects at greater distances than cameras and can support high-speed and nighttime driving in the context of its Ground Truth Perception system. That is the automaker’s stated rationale, not an independent comparative test result.

In the truck program, the planned architecture distinguishes long-range sensing from short-range coverage, and pairs LiDAR with radar and cameras. This illustrates why a sensor’s role cannot be judged apart from the whole system: different sensors and ranges are intended to contribute different information.

Vehicle integration has defined interface categories

ISO 23150-12:2026, published June 29, 2026, specifies technology-specific logical interfaces between LiDAR sensors or sensor clusters and data-fusion units for automated-driving functions. It defines a feature-level interface (FLI), an advanced detection level interface (ADLI) and a detection level interface (DLI). It excludes raw-data interfaces and does not specify electrical or mechanical interfaces. The standard addresses integration, not LiDAR performance thresholds or proof of vehicle safety.

What shipment figures can—and cannot—show

Supplier shipments are evidence of commercial activity, but they are not a count of unique vehicles in use, a measure of consumer availability or a market-wide adoption rate.

Measure Reported value How to interpret it
Hesai ADAS LiDAR shipments, Q3 2025 380,759 units Hesai reported this figure in its Q3 2025 SEC-filed business update. It is a company-reported quarterly shipment count, not total automotive LiDAR market volume or vehicle penetration. Hesai’s filing
Year-over-year comparison for those shipments 193.1% increase from 129,913 units in Q3 2024 The comparison is also Hesai’s reported shipment figure. It does not show how many vehicles were sold or how many manufacturers use LiDAR.
Design wins cited in the filing Hesai said its two largest ADAS customers had design wins across their 2026 models. A design win is not the same as a confirmed production volume or the number of vehicles ultimately delivered with the sensor.

The available examples and supplier figures do not provide a comparable global adoption percentage. Suppliers, vehicle models, markets and automation uses vary, and shipment totals do not map one-for-one to vehicles in service.

Does LiDAR make a car safer or self-driving?

LiDAR is a sensing input, not a stand-alone safety result or a substitute for the complete vehicle system. The evidence cited here does not establish that LiDAR is universally safer than cameras or radar, or that it is required for autonomous driving.

A January 2025 NHTSA PARTS study analyzed about 98 million vehicle records across 168 models from model years 2015–2023 and more than 21.1 million police-reported crashes supplied for analysis. NHTSA reported a 49% reduction in front-to-rear crashes for automatic emergency braking across those model years, and a 9% reduction in single-vehicle frontal crashes with non-motorists for vehicles equipped with pedestrian AEB. Those are estimates for ADAS features across the study, not LiDAR-specific causal results; they should not be attributed to LiDAR.

For its ProPILOT system, Nissan says the driver must monitor the system, and that it does not work in all weather, traffic or road conditions. More broadly, NHTSA says vehicles currently for sale in the United States are not fully automated or “self-driving” and require the driver’s full attention. The agency also says companies must comply with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards and certify that vehicles are free of safety risks. NHTSA’s consumer guidance on automated vehicle safety

How to distinguish driver assistance from automated driving

“Self-driving” is often used loosely, so identify the automation level a source actually names. NHTSA’s automated-driving materials align terminology with SAE J3016 and use “automated driving systems” for SAE Levels 3–5. NHTSA’s automated-driving systems overview

  • SAE Level 2: Nissan labels its described ProPILOT system Level 2. The driver must monitor the system and remain responsible for vehicle control.
  • SAE Level 4: Daimler Truck and Torc describe their planned autonomous truck program as Level 4 and intended for highway and regional routes in North America. This is a planned commercial program, not evidence that the trucks are already in broad service.

A LiDAR-equipped vehicle is therefore not automatically driverless. The system’s level, operating conditions, availability and driver responsibilities matter as much as the sensor list.
