Lexus vs. Acura: Which Luxury Brand Is Cheaper to Own?

Edmunds’ five-year estimate favors the 2026 Acura RDX AWD over the 2026 Lexus RX 350, but calculator assumptions and model choice matter.

In one current, like-for-like example, the Acura RDX is estimated to cost less to own over five years than the Lexus RX 350. Edmunds puts a base 2026 Acura RDX AWD at $59,971 and a base 2026 Lexus RX 350 at $67,675—a $7,704 difference in its estimates. That answers the question for this model pair, not for every Acura and Lexus.

What the 2026 RDX-versus-RX comparison estimates

Edmunds’ comparison lists the following five-year estimates for a 2026 Acura RDX AWD and a 2026 Lexus RX 350. These are projected ownership costs, not observed bills or a guarantee of what an owner will pay.

Five-year cost category 2026 Acura RDX AWD 2026 Lexus RX 350
True Cost to Own $59,971 $67,675
Depreciation $19,755 $21,349
Financing $9,580 $11,901
Taxes and fees $3,031 $3,705
Fuel $15,854 $14,589
Insurance $5,593 $6,108
Maintenance $5,207 $9,088
Repairs $951 $935
Average cost per mile $0.80 $0.90

Edmunds’ 2026 Acura RDX vs. Lexus RX comparison estimates lower RDX costs for depreciation, financing, taxes and fees, insurance, and maintenance. It estimates the RX to cost less for fuel and repairs. The overall RDX advantage therefore does not mean it is cheaper in every category.

Why another calculator can give different totals

Kelley Blue Book’s separate 2026 model pages also show a lower estimated five-year total for the RDX, but their figures differ from Edmunds’:

Source and listed vehicle Estimated five-year cost to own Included detail
Kelley Blue Book, 2026 Acura RDX $60,924 $37,843 out of pocket plus $23,081 depreciation
Kelley Blue Book, 2026 Lexus RX $66,438 $46,728 out of pocket plus $19,710 depreciation

KBB’s RDX estimate lists $7,957 for fuel, $5,802 for maintenance, $13,120 for insurance, $1,157 for repairs, $5,820 for financing, and $3,987 for state fees. Its RX estimate lists $9,146 for fuel, $8,166 for maintenance, $15,870 for insurance, $1,107 for repairs, $6,726 for financing, and $5,713 for state fees. See KBB’s pages for the 2026 Acura RDX and 2026 Lexus RX.

Those KBB totals should be compared with each other as KBB estimates, not added to or blended with Edmunds’ category figures. Calculator methods, assumptions, and displayed vehicle configurations can differ; even a separate KBB RX 350 listing presents another total. Check the exact trim and configuration before treating any estimate as a direct match for a vehicle you are considering.

What ownership costs include—and what changes them

Edmunds’ True Cost to Own framework includes depreciation, financing, taxes and fees, fuel, insurance, maintenance, and repairs. Its estimates assume five years of ownership, 15,000 miles per year, traditional financing, above-average credit, 10% down, and a 60-month loan. Fuel calculations use EPA ratings and a specified city/highway mix. Edmunds describes the figure as a comparison tool rather than a personal-cost prediction; actual expenses vary with the buyer and circumstances. Details are on its five-year cost calculator page.

  • Depreciation: The difference between what you pay and what the vehicle is worth later can outweigh smaller differences in individual running costs.
  • Insurance: KBB says its estimates can vary with driver age, driving record, credit, location, trim, and insurer. Get quotes using your own details rather than assuming the displayed estimate will apply.
  • Fuel: Annual mileage, fuel prices, and driving mix affect your result. The Edmunds figures reflect its stated assumptions, not your route or local prices.
  • Maintenance and repairs: Scheduled service and unexpected work are separate categories in Edmunds’ comparison. The listed totals are estimates, not evidence of a universal repair-frequency difference between the brands.
  • Financing and fees: Credit, down payment, loan terms, tax rates, and local fees can change the total even when the vehicle is unchanged.

Does Lexus resale value make it cheaper overall?

Kelley Blue Book’s 2026 resale announcement projects about 45% five-year retained value for an average 2026 model-year vehicle and names the Lexus RX its Luxury Midsize SUV winner in the Best Resale Value awards. That is useful resale context, but it is not a model-specific cost total or proof that every RX costs less to own than an RDX. It does not directly overturn Edmunds’ estimate for the particular 2026 vehicles above, which reflects a broader set of categories and its own assumptions. See Kelley Blue Book’s 2026 Best Resale Value award announcement.

How to compare the cars you would actually buy

  1. Match the vehicles: Compare the same model year, drivetrain, trim, and options as closely as possible. The figures above specifically compare a 2026 RDX AWD with a 2026 RX 350; they do not establish a result for other trims or powertrains.
  2. Use one calculator at a time: Compare both vehicles within Edmunds or both within KBB. Do not combine category totals from different calculators.
  3. Set your own ownership assumptions: Use your expected annual mileage, location, financing terms, down payment, and credit profile where the calculator allows it.
  4. Get personal insurance quotes: Quote the exact trims using your household’s driver and location details, since insurance estimates are especially individual.
  5. Review the categories, not only the grand total: Check depreciation, fuel, insurance, maintenance, repairs, financing, and taxes or fees to see which assumptions account for the difference.

What the evidence does—and does not—show

The available estimates support a narrow conclusion: Edmunds’ listed 2026 base-model comparison and KBB’s separate 2026 model pages each put the RDX below the RX in estimated five-year ownership cost. They do not show that Acura as a brand is always cheaper to own than Lexus across every vehicle, trim, used-car purchase, owner profile, or location.

Nor do these figures establish a robust, apples-to-apples repair-frequency ranking or a full current comparison of the brands’ new-vehicle warranties. Acura’s 2026 RDX page references an Acura Maintenance Program and a four-year/50,000-mile limited warranty for genuine accessories; that reference is not a complete statement of the vehicle warranty and does not supply a Lexus comparison. See Acura’s 2026 RDX specifications page.
