Short answer: no. The Lexus TX and Toyota Grand Highlander are closely related three-row SUVs with nearly identical dimensions, wheelbases, cargo capacity, and Indiana assembly. But the TX is not simply a rebadged or “budget” Grand Highlander. It is Lexus’s more luxurious interpretation of the same broad front-drive-based architecture, with different interior materials, technology, chassis tuning, powertrains, and pricing.
The Grand Highlander is the value- and family-practicality choice. The TX is aimed at buyers willing to pay substantially more for a quieter, more premium cabin, Lexus equipment and presentation, and—in some versions—more powerful electrified drivetrains or plug-in capability.
The quick comparison
| Category | Toyota Grand Highlander | Lexus TX |
|---|---|---|
| Positioning | Mainstream three-row family SUV | Luxury three-row SUV |
| Underlying architecture | Modified TNGA-K platform | Lexus GA-K platform |
| Wheelbase | 116.1 inches | 116.1 inches |
| Width | 78.3 inches | 78.3 inches |
| Maximum cargo volume | Up to 97.5 cubic feet | 97 cubic feet |
| Seating | Seven or eight, depending on second-row configuration | Seven or eight, depending on second-row configuration |
| Base 2026 U.S. MSRP | $41,860 currently displayed by Toyota | $58,690 including Lexus’s $1,550 delivery, processing, and handling fee |
| Most distinctive electrified option | Efficiency-focused 2.5-liter hybrid or 362-hp Hybrid MAX | 366-hp TX 500h or 404-hp TX 550h+ plug-in hybrid |
Those figures are for the 2026 model year and the mainland U.S. Toyota’s displayed consumer-site pricing can differ from an earlier model-year launch announcement, so verify the live manufacturer page before buying. The Lexus price includes its stated delivery, processing, and handling fee; the Toyota figure should not automatically be assumed to include identical charges.
How closely related are they?
Very closely—but “related” is more accurate than “identical.” Toyota describes the Grand Highlander as using a modified version of the company’s TNGA-K architecture, with a longer wheelbase and wider track than the regular Highlander. Lexus identifies the TX as using the GA-K platform and emphasizes body rigidity, noise- and vibration-reduction measures, suspension refinement, and weight distribution.
#1 Best Overall
In practical terms, both are front-drive-based, three-row crossovers rather than body-on-frame SUVs such as a Toyota Sequoia or Lexus GX. They share the same 116.1-inch wheelbase and 78.3-inch width. Both are also assembled at Toyota Motor Manufacturing Indiana in Princeton, Indiana.
The 2026 Grand Highlander measures 201.4 inches long, 78.3 inches wide, and 72.1 inches tall. The TX is approximately 203.1 inches long in TX 350 and TX 550h+ form and about 203.5 inches long as a TX 500h. It is therefore slightly longer and lower in the published specifications, but the fundamental footprint and cabin mission are nearly the same.
That common foundation explains why the vehicles have similar passenger and cargo packaging. It does not prove that they have identical ride quality, equipment, materials, powertrain calibration, or long-term ownership costs.
Interior space and family practicality
Neither SUV is a cramped, occasional-use three-row. Their long wheelbases are central to the design, and both are intended to carry adults and family equipment more comfortably than many smaller three-row crossovers.
Lexus lists 20.2 cubic feet of cargo space behind the TX’s third row, 57.4 cubic feet with the third row folded, and 97 cubic feet with both rear rows folded. Toyota lists up to 97.5 cubic feet for the Grand Highlander and says it can accommodate seven small roller bags behind the rear seats.
The Grand Highlander seats up to eight with its available second-row bench. Second-row captain’s chairs create a seven-passenger configuration. The TX also offers a bench or captain’s chairs, with certain captain’s-chair configurations adding features such as second-row heating and ventilation.
Toyota publishes 33.5 inches of third-row legroom for the Grand Highlander. Lexus emphasizes spacious third-row legroom and long-distance comfort in the TX, but the available research does not include an independent passenger test. It would be too strong to claim that one vehicle is definitively more comfortable for every passenger without comparing the same seating configuration in person.
Which one is more practical?
The Grand Highlander has the edge if maximum passenger capacity and straightforward family utility are your priorities. Its eight-seat configuration is particularly relevant to larger families. The TX offers much the same basic utility, but its interior presentation, materials, and available luxury equipment are a bigger part of the purchase decision.

For either vehicle, check the actual second- and third-row configuration before ordering. A captain’s-chair layout may make third-row access easier, but it reduces seating capacity from eight to seven.
Powertrains: the comparison is not one-to-one
The entry-level gas models are the easiest place to begin, although even here the Lexus has a modest power advantage.
Gas models
The 2026 Lexus TX 350 uses a 2.4-liter turbocharged four-cylinder producing 275 horsepower and 317 lb.-ft. of torque. It is available with front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive and uses an eight-speed automatic transmission.
The 2026 gas Grand Highlander also uses a 2.4-liter turbocharged four-cylinder, rated at 265 horsepower. Front-wheel drive is available, with all-wheel drive offered depending on configuration. The similar engine layout does not mean the two vehicles have identical output or calibration.

Hybrid models
Toyota offers a conventional 2.5-liter hybrid producing 245 horsepower. Depending on configuration, Toyota estimates fuel economy as high as 36 mpg combined. This is the Grand Highlander’s most important advantage for buyers who want hybrid efficiency without moving into a luxury-SUV price range.
Toyota also offers the 362-horsepower Hybrid MAX, which uses a turbocharged 2.4-liter hybrid powertrain and all-wheel drive.
Lexus takes a different approach. The TX does not offer a direct equivalent to Toyota’s efficiency-focused 2.5-liter hybrid. Instead, its electrified choices emphasize output and luxury positioning:
- TX 500h: a turbocharged 2.4-liter hybrid system producing 366 total system horsepower, with Lexus DIRECT4 all-wheel drive and 406 lb.-ft. of torque.
- TX 550h+: a 3.5-liter V6 plug-in hybrid producing 404 total system horsepower. Lexus projects 33 miles of electric driving range and approximately three hours for Level 2 charging under ideal conditions.
The TX 500h is closest in mission to the Grand Highlander Hybrid MAX, but it is not merely the same vehicle with a different badge. Lexus gives it distinct calibration, branding, interior treatment, and chassis equipment. The TX 550h+ has no direct Grand Highlander equivalent in this comparison.

Which powertrain makes the most sense?
- Choose the Grand Highlander 2.5-liter hybrid if fuel economy and purchase price matter more than acceleration or luxury appointments.
- Consider the Grand Highlander Hybrid MAX if you want stronger performance and all-wheel drive without moving to Lexus pricing.
- Choose the TX 500h if you want a more powerful, luxury-oriented hybrid SUV with Lexus equipment and presentation.
- Choose the TX 550h+ only if plug-in capability is genuinely useful—especially if you can charge at home or work and your daily driving fits within its projected electric range.
For TX 550h+ owners considering home charging, a J1772 Level 2 charger for Lexus TX 550h+ may be relevant. Confirm the vehicle’s J1772 compatibility, charger amperage, circuit capacity, and installation requirements in the owner’s documentation, and use a qualified electrician for any new electrical work.
Price: the Lexus premium is substantial
Toyota currently displays a $41,860 starting MSRP for the 2026 Grand Highlander on its consumer site. Lexus lists the 2026 TX 350 at $58,690, including a $1,550 delivery, processing, and handling fee. The TX 350 AWD starts at $60,090. The TX 500h F SPORT Performance Premium starts at $72,010, while the TX 550h+ Luxury starts at $81,060.
Using those currently displayed base figures, the entry TX costs approximately $16,830 more than the entry Grand Highlander. That is a useful illustration of the market-positioning gap, not a perfect trim-to-trim comparison. The Lexus is intended to deliver a higher level of materials, equipment, service experience, and brand presentation, while the Toyota’s base model establishes a much lower entry point.
Do not compare a $41,860 Grand Highlander with an $81,060 TX 550h+ as if they were equivalent vehicles. The TX 550h+ is a high-end plug-in hybrid with a different powertrain and equipment mission. A fairer comparison matches:

What does the TX add?
Cabin and technology
The 2026 TX includes a standard 14-inch Lexus Interface touchscreen, a 12.3-inch multi-information display, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and seven USB ports. Available features include a 21-speaker Mark Levinson audio system, head-up display, Advanced Park, digital key, traffic-jam assist, and a digital rearview mirror.
Grand Highlander buyers can also move into well-equipped upper trims, so it is inaccurate to describe every Toyota interior as basic. The meaningful difference is the overall luxury target and the availability of Lexus-specific equipment. Exact standard and optional features vary by trim, so compare the window stickers or detailed build sheets rather than relying on the model name alone.
Materials
NuLuxe synthetic leather is standard on several TX grades. The TX 350 Luxury and TX 550h+ Luxury use semi-aniline leather, while the TX 500h F SPORT Performance Luxury uses leather-trimmed seating. Higher Grand Highlander grades also offer leather-trimmed seating and more upscale interior appointments.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsThe question is not whether the Toyota can be optioned with attractive materials. It can. The question is whether the buyer values the TX’s more consistently luxury-oriented presentation enough to pay for it.
Rank #4
Chassis and refinement
Lexus describes the TX as using additional body adhesives, short-pitch spot welding, a five-arm rear multi-link suspension, and—on performance grades—adaptive variable suspension. Lexus Driving Signature tuning is intended to improve ride quality, quietness, and steering response.
Those are manufacturer engineering descriptions, not independent test results. They support the conclusion that Lexus deliberately tuned and equipped the TX differently, but they do not justify claiming that every driver will perceive a specific ride or handling improvement. A buyer who cares about this distinction should drive comparable TX and Grand Highlander trims on the same roads.
Safety: similar systems, but do not call the results identical
The TX comes standard with Lexus Safety System+ 3.0. The Grand Highlander comes standard with Toyota Safety Sense 3.0. The systems are closely related in purpose, but branding does not establish that every trim has exactly the same equipment or operating behavior.
The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety’s 2026 class summaries list the Lexus TX with an Acceptable overall crashworthiness result in the midsize-luxury-SUV category; several individual tests are listed as not tested. The 2026 Toyota Grand Highlander appears in the midsize-SUV category with an Acceptable overall result, Good ratings in the small-overlap and updated-side tests, and an Acceptable updated moderate-overlap result.
These results should not be reduced to “the Lexus is safer” or “the Toyota is safer.” IIHS places them in different classes, some tests are unavailable for one or both vehicles, and ratings can apply across model years or configurations under the Institute’s methodology. Check the latest IIHS vehicle pages and individual test results before making a safety-driven purchase.

Toyota’s cited 2026 program material identifies ToyotaCare scheduled maintenance for 2026 and earlier model years as two years or 25,000 miles, with roadside assistance for two years and unlimited mileage, subject to program terms.
Lexus publishes a four-year/50,000-mile basic warranty in its LexusCare materials. Warranty, complimentary-maintenance, roadside-assistance, and connected-service details can vary by powertrain, vehicle, and program terms, so verify them in the current U.S. warranty booklet and the exact vehicle’s documentation.

The practical distinction is broader than warranty length. You are choosing between a Toyota and Lexus dealer network, different standard equipment, different available powertrains, and a materially different initial price. Do not assume that the TX automatically has lower repair costs, better reliability, or a superior ownership outcome; the supplied research does not establish those claims.

For either SUV, model-specific protection can be useful in a family vehicle. If you are shopping for accessories, verify model year, row configuration, and trim before buying Lexus TX all-weather floor mats or Toyota Grand Highlander all-weather floor mats. Do not assume that mats for one vehicle fit the other simply because the SUVs share architecture.
Which one should you buy?
Choose the Grand Highlander if…
- You want the lowest reasonable purchase price.
- You need available eight-passenger seating.
- You prioritize the efficiency-focused 2.5-liter hybrid.
- You want a large, practical three-row cabin without paying for luxury-brand equipment.
- You are comfortable selecting an upper Toyota trim if you want more upscale materials and features.
Choose the TX if…
- You specifically want Lexus styling, branding, and a more premium cabin presentation.
- Quietness, materials, and luxury equipment matter enough to justify the price premium.
- You want the 366-hp TX 500h or the 404-hp TX 550h+ plug-in hybrid.
- You value available features such as the Mark Levinson audio system, head-up display, Advanced Park, digital key, or digital rearview mirror.
- You have compared similarly equipped vehicles and still prefer the Lexus ownership proposition.
Verdict: the TX is a luxury derivative, not a budget Grand Highlander
The Lexus TX and Toyota Grand Highlander share enough hardware and packaging to make the relationship obvious. Their dimensions, wheelbase, three-row layout, cargo capacity, and Indiana assembly connect them directly.
But “budget version” reverses the more useful way to understand the lineup. The Grand Highlander is the mainstream family SUV, while the TX is a more luxurious derivative built around the same broad packaging idea. Lexus adds its own interior treatment, technology, safety-system branding, chassis execution, comfort objectives, and powertrain choices.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is the Lexus TX the same vehicle as the Toyota Grand Highlander?
No. They are closely related corporate products that use the same broad front-drive-based family of architecture and share similar dimensions and packaging. The TX has distinct Lexus interior materials, equipment, chassis tuning, branding, and powertrain choices.
Which is cheaper, the Lexus TX or Grand Highlander?
The Grand Highlander. For 2026, Toyota currently displays a $41,860 starting MSRP, while Lexus lists the TX 350 at $58,690 including a $1,550 delivery, processing, and handling fee. Exact transaction prices and mandatory charges vary.
Does the Grand Highlander have more cargo space than the Lexus TX?
Their published maximum figures are nearly identical. Toyota lists up to 97.5 cubic feet for the Grand Highlander, while Lexus lists 97 cubic feet for the TX. Lexus lists 20.2 cubic feet behind the TX’s third row and 57.4 cubic feet with that row folded.
Which has better fuel economy, the TX or Grand Highlander?
The Grand Highlander is the better fit for buyers prioritizing hybrid efficiency because it offers a conventional 2.5-liter hybrid with manufacturer-estimated fuel economy as high as 36 mpg combined, depending on configuration. The TX’s electrified models emphasize power and plug-in capability instead.
Can the Lexus TX seat eight people?
Yes, depending on configuration. Both vehicles can be ordered with a second-row bench for eight-passenger seating or captain’s chairs for seven-passenger seating. Confirm the exact configuration on the vehicle being considered.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: The Grand Highlander delivers the shared three-row space and family utility at a much lower price, while the TX adds a luxury-focused cabin, equipment, tuning, and more powerful electrified options. It is best understood as a premium Lexus derivative—not simply a cheaper Grand Highlander with a different badge.
