The Lexus LX has progressed from the LX 450 to the LX 470, LX 570 and LX 600, with the hybrid LX 700h joining the lineup for 2025. The clearest milestones are the 1996 U.S. launch, the 2008 LX 570, the 2022 fourth-generation redesign, and the 2025 hybrid and Overtrail additions. This is a timeline of documented major changes—not a complete year-by-year equipment log.

Lexus’s sources are strongest on launch and selected update milestones. They do not document every equipment or specification change for every model year, particularly across the LX 450, LX 470 and LX 570 eras. Treat years not called out below as gaps in this key-update timeline, not proof that a particular year had no changes.
1996: LX 450 begins the lineup
Lexus says the LX 450 was announced in 1995 and went on sale in 1996. The brand’s 35-year retrospective describes it as Lexus’s first entry into the SUV market, revealed in New York ahead of its planned early-1996 arrival. Those launch records establish the start of the LX nameplate, but not a detailed list of equipment or changes by model year. See Lexus’s brand history and 35-year retrospective.
1998: LX 470 replaces the original nameplate
Lexus dates the LX 470’s debut to 1998. The official history confirms the nameplate progression after the LX 450, but the sources available here do not provide a complete annual update record for the LX 470 generation. Avoid treating the debut date as evidence that every later model year was unchanged.

2013: exterior, multimedia and terrain-system changes
For 2013, Lexus reported a revised exterior led by its spindle grille and multimedia-system changes. The update also included revised Crawl Control, Turn Assist and Multi-terrain Select with five terrain settings, along with interior and convenience changes. These are documented changes for the 2013 update, not a complete account of every LX 570 model year. Details are in Lexus’s 2013 LX 570 announcement.

2022: LX 600 brings a ground-up redesign
Lexus unveiled the fourth-generation LX in 2021 for the 2022 model year. The redesign moved the SUV to a GA-F body-on-frame platform and introduced a 3.5-liter twin-turbo V6, a dual-display Lexus Interface and new grades: F SPORT and Ultra Luxury. Lexus said the platform was 20% more rigid and 441 pounds lighter than its predecessor; those are manufacturer-reported comparisons, not independent measurements.
At the time of the announcement, Lexus said more than 500,000 LX models had been sold worldwide since the nameplate began. The launch release also captured the model’s dual role: “Since its launch in 1995, the LX has been a luxury SUV icon shaped by an identity distinguished by an indomitable duality.” Both the sales figure and quotation are from Lexus’s October 13, 2021 2022 LX 600 launch announcement.

2025: LX 700h hybrid and Overtrail grade
For 2025, Lexus introduced the first hybrid powertrain in the LX lineup and added the Overtrail grade. Lexus described the LX 700h with 457 combined horsepower, 583 lb-ft of torque and EPA-estimated fuel economy of 20 mpg combined. These figures apply to the LX 700h configuration described in the manufacturer’s 2025 release.
Overtrail’s documented equipment emphasizes off-road use: front and rear locking differentials, all-terrain tires, a front skid plate and all-weather floor liners. Those liners are a grade-specific equipment detail in the cited release; they do not establish fitment for other LX years, grades or seating layouts. Lexus’s 2025 LX announcement describes the additions.

The Overtrail grade was offered on the LX 700h in two- or three-row layouts. These details describe the 2026 lineup, not a universal configuration for other model years. See the 2026 announcement.

Quick Recap
How to compare LX model years
- Start with the nameplate and generation: LX 450, LX 470, LX 570, LX 600 or LX 700h indicate broad eras, but a name alone does not identify every year’s equipment.
- Separate redesigns from annual updates: 2022 was a ground-up redesign; the documented 2013, 2026 and 2027 changes are specific updates or grade details.
- Check powertrain and grade: the LX 600 launch introduced a twin-turbo gasoline V6, while the LX 700h added the first hybrid system in 2025. F SPORT Handling and Overtrail have distinct documented equipment.
- Verify seating layout and fitment: two- or three-row availability is stated for the 2026 LX 700h Overtrail, not automatically for every year or grade. Confirm year, grade and row configuration before relying on accessory compatibility.
