For the U.S. market, the Lexus IS has three confirmed generations: first-generation XE10 cars from 2001–2005, second-generation XE20 cars from 2006–2013, and third-generation XE30 cars from 2014–2025. The redesigned 2026 IS follows them, although Lexus’s official releases used here do not explicitly call it a fourth generation.
The most important shopping warning is that an IS badge does not identify one engine or body style. A 2021 rear-wheel-drive IS 300 has a turbocharged four-cylinder, while the all-wheel-drive IS 300 has a V6; the SportCross, IS C, IS F and IS 500 also have substantially different fitment and ownership considerations.

The Lexus IS generation timeline at a glance
The Lexus IS is easiest to understand as three U.S. generations, followed by a redesigned 2026 model whose official generation number Lexus has not specified:

Why the years can be confusing
The IS launched globally before it reached the United States. Lexus introduced the original IS200 internationally in 1999. In the United States, Lexus announced the car in 1999, began selling it in 2000, and identified it as a 2001 model-year vehicle. That is why a global timeline can begin with 1999 while a U.S. model-year guide begins with 2001.[C1][C2]

Market differences continue throughout the nameplate’s history. The United Kingdom and other markets received models such as the IS200, IS220d, IS200d and IS 300h that were not part of the U.S. lineup. A listing for an IS220d, for example, is not evidence that the same diesel model was sold new in America.
There is also an important naming distinction at the newer end of the timeline. Lexus officially calls the 2014 car the third-generation IS. Lexus describes the 2021 car as a new or reimagined IS and the 2026 car as a new IS, but the official releases covered here do not explicitly call either one a new numbered generation. The most precise terminology is therefore third-generation IS, updated for 2021, and new 2026 IS. “Fourth-generation IS” may appear in enthusiast or catalog coverage, but it should not be presented as an official Lexus designation without attribution.[C3][C4][C5]
First-generation Lexus IS: U.S. model years 2001–2005
The first-generation IS established the formula that still defines the model: a compact, front-engine, rear-wheel-drive sports sedan intended to compete with smaller German sport sedans. In the United States, the range was centered on the IS 300 and its naturally aspirated inline-six.
2001–2005 IS 300 sedan
The U.S. IS 300 used a naturally aspirated version of Toyota and Lexus’s 2JZ engine family, best known to enthusiasts from the fourth-generation Supra. The engine’s association with the Supra helped give the IS 300 an unusually strong enthusiast following, but the car was not a Supra sedan: it was a separate compact Lexus platform with its own chassis, packaging and suspension tuning.
Lexus also credits the original IS with popularizing clear-lens “altezza” style taillamps, a design detail that became a major aftermarket trend. The “IS” name is described by Lexus as shorthand for “intelligent sport.”[C1]
2002–2005 IS 300 SportCross
The IS 300 SportCross joined the U.S. range for the 2002 model year. It was a five-door, wagon-like interpretation of the compact IS, giving buyers more cargo versatility without abandoning the rear-wheel-drive sport-sedan concept. It is not the same body style as the later IS C coupe-convertible.
The SportCross is the key first-generation distinction for used-car shoppers. If you want the original IS in a practical hatchback-like body, the U.S. search is limited to 2002–2005 SportCross examples. Condition, originality and documentation matter more than a generic “first-generation IS” label because a sedan and SportCross do not share every body or interior part.

Global first-generation versions
Outside the United States, the first generation was broader. Lexus UK’s official timeline records the IS200 launch in 1999, the arrival of the IS300 and IS300 SportCross in 2001, and the IS200 SportCross in the UK in 2002.[C2] Those names explain why international classifieds and parts listings may not line up with U.S. model-year references.
Second-generation Lexus IS: U.S. model years 2006–2013
Lexus introduced the second-generation IS in 2005. The new sedan went on sale in the United Kingdom that November and arrived in the United States for the 2006 model year. Compared with the original, it brought a more polished design, additional electronic features and a wider performance range.[C1][C2]
2006–2013 IS 250 and IS 350 sedans
The U.S. IS 250 used a 2.5-liter V6, while the IS 350 used a 3.5-liter V6. The IS 350 was the performance-oriented mainstream model; Lexus’s historical material records a 5.6-second 0-to-60-mph time for the 2007 IS 350.[C1]
The second-generation car added features including keyless ignition, electroluminescent instrumentation, improved safety equipment and sportier suspension tuning. Available all-wheel drive expanded its appeal in regions where winter traction mattered, while rear-wheel drive remained the enthusiast-oriented layout.
Do not assume that every second-generation IS has the same drivetrain or equipment. Engine, transmission, drive layout, trim and market can all change the correct part, service procedure or vehicle specification. A VIN-level check is preferable when ordering components.
2008–2013 IS F
The IS F was the first vehicle in Lexus’s F performance line. It debuted internationally in 2007 and reached the market as a 2008 model-year vehicle. Unlike the IS 250 and IS 350, the IS F used a 5.0-liter V8 and an eight-speed automatic transmission.[C1][C2]
The IS F is best viewed as a high-performance derivative of the second-generation IS, not as a separate generation. It has its own powertrain, chassis hardware, brakes, body details and maintenance considerations. A listing that simply says “2008 IS” is not specific enough to establish whether it is an IS 250, IS 350 or IS F.

2009–2013 IS C coupe-convertibles
Lexus expanded the family with the IS 250C and IS 350C for the 2009 model year in the United States. These were two-door coupe-convertibles with a retractable hardtop, distinct from the first-generation SportCross wagon.[C1][C2]
The IS C matters when shopping for accessories and replacement body parts. Doors, roof components, weather seals, interior trim and some electrical parts cannot be assumed to fit a sedan. Confirm the exact body style before buying anything advertised simply as an “IS” part.
International second-generation models
Global markets received versions that were not sold in the United States, including the IS 220d and IS 200d diesels. Lexus UK’s timeline also records the IS F in 2007, the IS 250C in 2009 and the F-Sport grade in 2010.[C2] These international names should not be added to a U.S. model-year list without a market qualification.
Third-generation Lexus IS: U.S. model years 2014–2025
Lexus introduced the all-new third-generation IS for 2014. The launch car brought the spindle grille, separated LED daytime running lights, a more rigid body, an all-new multilink rear suspension and revised front suspension and steering. F SPORT was available across the U.S. range at launch.[C3]
2014–2020 IS 250 and IS 350
The initial U.S. lineup consisted of the IS 250 and IS 350, with rear- and all-wheel-drive configurations depending on model. In the launch specification, the IS 250’s 2.5-liter V6 produced 204 horsepower and used a six-speed electronically controlled automatic transmission. The rear-wheel-drive IS 350 used a 3.5-liter V6 rated at 306 horsepower and an eight-speed automatic transmission.[C3]

Its increased rigidity and revised suspension were intended to sharpen steering response and handling while maintaining the refinement expected of a Lexus sedan. For a used buyer, the 2014–2020 cars are best considered the original run of the XE30 generation, before the substantial 2021 revision.
Internationally, the third-generation range also included the IS 300h hybrid. Lexus UK’s timeline records European ordering for the IS 250 and IS 300h in 2013, with customer deliveries beginning in July 2013. The IS 300h received a five-star Euro NCAP safety rating in 2014, but that is a market-specific test result and should not be generalized to every IS configuration worldwide.[C2]
2021–2025: major third-generation update
For 2021, Lexus extensively revised the third-generation IS around what it called the Lexus Driving Signature. The update included additional body rigidity, revised suspension work, larger available wheels, updated multimedia and Lexus Safety System+ 2.5. The styling changes were substantial enough that many listings and buyers treat 2021 as a separate phase, but it remains within the third-generation lineage in Lexus’s official history.[C4][C6]
The 2021 U.S. engine naming requires particular care:
| 2021 U.S. model | Drivetrain | Engine | Lexus-rated output |
|---|---|---|---|
| IS 300 | Rear-wheel drive | 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder | 241 hp |
| IS 300 | All-wheel drive | 3.5-liter V6 | 260 hp |
| IS 350 | Rear- or all-wheel drive, depending on configuration | 3.5-liter V6 | 311 hp |
In other words, the badge “IS 300” does not identify one engine across all 2021 U.S. cars. The rear-wheel-drive version uses the turbocharged four-cylinder, while the all-wheel-drive version uses a V6. Lexus restricted F SPORT to the IS 350 in the 2021 U.S. lineup.[C6]
2022–2025 IS 500 F SPORT Performance
The 2022 model year added the IS 500 F SPORT Performance, the first Lexus model to use that performance sub-line. It used a naturally aspirated 5.0-liter V8 producing 472 horsepower and 395 lb.-ft. of torque, an eight-speed automatic transmission and rear-wheel drive. Lexus listed a 4.4-second 0-to-60-mph time based on AMCI testing.[C7]
Visual and hardware changes distinguished the IS 500 from the V6 models, including a raised hood, quad exhaust outlets and unique wheels. It is still an updated XE30-generation IS rather than a new generation.
The IS 500 continued through the U.S. 2025 model year. Lexus offered a 2025 IS 500 Special Appearance Package limited to 180 units and separately announced a 500-unit IS 500 Ultimate Edition for North America. The Ultimate Edition retained the naturally aspirated V8’s 472 horsepower and 395 lb.-ft. of torque.[C8][C9]

2026 Lexus IS: a new redesign, but not officially numbered by Lexus
Lexus unveiled the new IS globally on September 9, 2025, with sales planned for various markets beginning in early 2026. The global announcement included IS 350 and IS 300h prototype specifications, but availability depends on the market.[C5]

The 2026 redesign brings revised exterior styling, a restyled instrument panel and center console, Lexus Safety System+ 3.0, and Lexus Interface with a standard 12.3-inch touchscreen. Lexus also revised chassis and steering tuning. These changes make the 2026 car materially different from the 2021–2025 version, even though Lexus’s cited materials call it a new or redesigned IS rather than explicitly assigning it a fourth-generation number.[C5][C7]
For a U.S. buyer, do not import the global IS 300h prototype information into the domestic model list. The announced U.S. range is IS 350 only.

Which Lexus IS generation should you look for?
The best generation depends less on a simple “newer is better” ranking than on the body style, engine and driving experience you want.
- Want the original enthusiast-era IS? Look at a 2001–2005 IS 300. The SportCross is the rare practical alternative in the U.S. range.
- Want a V8 without moving to the third-generation IS 500? The second-generation IS F is the relevant model, beginning with the 2008 model year.
- Want a convertible? Search the second-generation IS 250C or IS 350C, not the first-generation SportCross.
- Want the latest conventional V6 IS before the 2026 redesign? Compare 2021–2025 IS 350 models, while remembering that the 2022–2025 range also includes the much more powerful IS 500.
- Want the newest U.S. technology and safety systems? The 2026 IS adds Lexus Safety System+ 3.0, updated Lexus Interface and a standard 12.3-inch display.
- Want a hybrid or diesel IS? Expand the search beyond the United States. IS 300h, IS 220d and IS 200d listings generally refer to international-market vehicles, not normal U.S. specifications.
Parts and maintenance: identify the exact car first
The IS name covers multiple chassis families, engines, transmissions, body styles and drivetrains. Before ordering a part or following a repair procedure, confirm:
- Model year and generation: XE10, XE20 or XE30.
- Exact badge: IS 250, IS 300, IS 350, IS F, IS 500 or an international-market version.
- Body style: sedan, SportCross or IS C coupe-convertible.
- Engine and drivetrain: especially the 2021 U.S. IS 300, where RWD and AWD versions use different engines.
- Trim and equipment, including F SPORT-specific components.
- VIN fitment, when the catalog or seller provides it.
Lexus’s parts catalog organizes genuine parts and accessories by year and exact model rather than treating every IS as interchangeable. That is the correct approach for everything from exterior moldings and suspension components to floor coverings and electrical parts.[C10][C11]
If you intend to perform your own work, a 2006–2013 Lexus IS service manual can be useful for the second-generation cars, but do not assume one edition covers every engine, trim or market. The same rule applies to a first-generation or 2021-and-newer manual: match the publication to the precise vehicle before relying on it.
Protective and convenience products require the same caution. Lexus IS floor mats need to match the generation and interior, while a car cover must suit the vehicle’s dimensions and mirror, antenna and body configuration. A product described only as fitting “Lexus IS” is not enough evidence of compatibility for a SportCross, IS C, IS F or IS 500.
For exact-fit replacements, Genuine Lexus IS parts sourced through a Lexus parts catalog or dealer are the most technically conservative choice. They may cost more than generic alternatives, but the relevant comparison is not simply price; it is whether the part matches the year, trim, drivetrain and VIN.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Comparing repair costs across generations
Repair costs cannot be inferred from the generation name alone. An older IS may have lower purchase prices but require age-related maintenance, while an IS F or IS 500 has specialized performance hardware and a V8 powertrain. AWD, convertible mechanisms and trim-specific body parts can also change the estimate.
A Lexus IS repair cost estimate can provide a starting point for comparing common jobs, but estimates vary by location, labor rate, vehicle condition, parts choice and the exact repair. Treat an online estimate as a budgeting tool, not a diagnosis or a guaranteed invoice.

This is particularly important when an advertisement uses a broad label such as “IS 300,” “F SPORT” or “V8 IS” without identifying the exact model year and configuration.
Common terminology mistakes to avoid
- Calling 1999 the U.S. model year: 1999 is the global IS200 launch year; the U.S. car is documented as a 2001 model-year IS sold beginning in 2000.
- Using the UK timeline as a U.S. lineup: The UK received diesel and hybrid models that were not sold in the United States.
- Calling 2021 a fourth generation: It is more accurately described as a major update to the third-generation XE30 IS unless a source explicitly attributes another label.
- Calling the IS 500 a new generation: It is a V8-powered performance derivative of the updated third-generation IS.
- Assuming every IS 300 has one engine: In the 2021 U.S. range, RWD used a turbocharged four-cylinder and AWD used a V6.
- Assuming all IS parts fit: Check year, trim, drivetrain, body style and VIN before ordering.

Frequently Asked Questions
How many Lexus IS generations are there?
What are the Lexus IS generations in the United States?
Is the 2021 Lexus IS a fourth generation?
The United States has three clearly identified Lexus IS generations: XE10 for 2001–2005, XE20 for 2006–2013 and XE30 for 2014–2025. The redesigned 2026 IS is newer, but Lexus’s cited official releases do not explicitly call it a fourth generation.
Which Lexus IS years had the SportCross wagon?
No. The 2021 IS is a major update to the third-generation XE30 model. Lexus describes it as a new or reimagined IS but does not officially number it as a fourth generation in the cited material.

Does every 2021 Lexus IS 300 have the same engine?
The IS 300 SportCross was sold in the United States for the 2002–2005 model years. The global first-generation range also included IS200 SportCross versions that were not part of the U.S. lineup.
Which Lexus IS has a V8?
No. The 2021 rear-wheel-drive IS 300 used a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder producing 241 horsepower. The all-wheel-drive IS 300 used a 3.5-liter V6 producing 260 horsepower.
Was the Lexus IS 300h sold in the United States?
The second-generation IS F introduced a 5.0-liter V8 for the 2008 model year. The third-generation IS 500 F SPORT Performance, sold from 2022 through 2025 in the United States, also used a naturally aspirated 5.0-liter V8, rated at 472 horsepower.
What is the 2026 U.S. Lexus IS?
The IS 300h was offered in international markets, including Europe, but it was not part of the U.S. lineup covered by this guide. The same market distinction applies to IS220d and IS200d diesel models.
Do Lexus IS parts fit every model year?
The 2026 U.S. lineup is limited to the IS 350 in F SPORT Design and F SPORT grades, with rear- or all-wheel drive. It retains the 3.5-liter V6 rated at 311 horsepower and adds revised styling, Lexus Safety System+ 3.0 and a standard 12.3-inch touchscreen.
What is the difference between the IS C and SportCross?
No. Fitment can vary by generation, year, engine, drivetrain, body style and trim. SportCross, IS C, IS F and IS 500 components should never be assumed to fit a standard IS sedan without checking the exact catalog listing or VIN.
What does F SPORT mean on a Lexus IS?
The SportCross is a five-door, wagon-like version of the first-generation IS 300. The IS C is a two-door coupe-convertible offered during the second-generation period as the IS 250C and IS 350C.
What is the difference between the IS F and IS 500?
F SPORT is a trim or performance-oriented equipment designation, not a separate generation. It appeared during the second-generation period and was available across the third-generation launch range, although Lexus restricted it to the IS 350 in the 2021 U.S. lineup.
How should I identify the correct Lexus IS repair manual?
Both are V8 performance models from different periods. The IS F belongs to the second-generation family and arrived for the 2008 model year. The IS 500 belongs to the updated third-generation XE30 family and was sold in the United States from 2022 through 2025.
How reliable are Lexus IS repair estimates?
Match the manual to the exact model year, generation, engine, drivetrain, body style and market. A manual labeled only for “Lexus IS” may not cover the differences between an IS 250, IS 350, IS F, IS C, SportCross or the two different 2021 IS 300 configurations.
What is the newest Lexus IS model year?
Online estimates can help with budgeting, but the final cost depends on location, labor rates, vehicle condition, parts choice and the specific repair. Use an estimate as a starting point and have the car inspected by a qualified shop.

The Bottom Line
Bottom line: In the United States, the Lexus IS runs from the first-generation IS 300 and SportCross (2001–2005), through the V6-powered second generation and IS F (2006–2013), to the XE30 third generation (2014–2025), including the IS 500 V8. The redesigned 2026 IS is a new U.S. IS 350, but Lexus has not explicitly assigned it a numbered fourth-generation label.
