Recent evidence favors the Lexus ES as the safer reliability bet, particularly for the 2025 model year. Consumer Reports rates the 2025 ES above its model-year peers for reliability and the 2025 Mercedes-Benz E-Class below its peers. J.D. Power’s 2026 study adds brand-level support for Lexus, but it does not publish a direct ES-versus-E-Class result in the cited summary. These findings point in a direction—not a guarantee about every model year or an individual car.
What the latest model-year evidence says
Consumer Reports’ summaries compare each car with other vehicles from the same model year, rather than scoring the ES directly against the E-Class. Even so, their opposing results make the 2025 comparison useful: the ES is described as more reliable than its peers, while the E-Class is described as less reliable than its peers.
| Vehicle and evidence | Reliability finding | Recall count in page summary | What the measure represents |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2025 Lexus ES — Consumer Reports | More reliable than other cars from the same model year | 1 NHTSA recall | Based on Consumer Reports’ latest subscriber survey of 2025 ES owners |
| 2025 Mercedes-Benz E-Class — Consumer Reports | Less reliable than other cars from the same model year | 3 NHTSA recalls | Based on Consumer Reports’ latest subscriber survey of 2025 E-Class owners |
The recall figures are the counts shown in the cited Consumer Reports summaries; they are not a complete reliability score or a prediction of how often a car will need repairs. Recall counts can change, and a recall is distinct from an owner-reported reliability problem. Check the specific vehicle’s VIN for current open recalls.
How J.D. Power’s 2026 study changes the picture
J.D. Power’s 2026 U.S. Vehicle Dependability Study found Lexus had the best result among premium brands, with 151 reported problems per 100 vehicles. The industry average was 204 problems per 100 vehicles. In this measure, a lower number indicates fewer reported problems.

The study surveyed 33,268 original owners of 2023 model-year vehicles and measured problems reported after three years of ownership. It was fielded from December 2024 through November 2025. The Lexus score is a brand-level result, not a score for the ES, and the cited study summary does not provide a matched E-Class score. It supports the case for Lexus as a brand but cannot settle a model-versus-model comparison on its own. J.D. Power’s 2026 study summary explains the study and its scope.
What other comparison scores can—and cannot—tell you
Auto Reliability Index gives the ES a composite score of 83/100 and the E-Class 60/100. Those are that publisher’s analysis, not official government or automaker reliability ratings. The index combines NHTSA complaint and recall data, estimated repair costs, and sales-normalized complaint rates. Its scores offer a direct comparison, but they should be read alongside the survey findings and with the methodology in mind. Raw complaint totals alone can mislead because sales volume and vehicle age affect how many complaints a model accumulates. See the comparison and its stated methodology.

Consumer Reports’ broader reliability-history approach draws on subscriber responses covering about 380,000 vehicles and 20 potential trouble spots, from engines and transmissions to brakes and electrical accessories. Those figures describe the scope of its broader survey; they are not the sample size for either the ES or E-Class. Consumer Reports describes its reliability methodology.
Why reliability is not the same as safety
Reliability evidence concerns problems and dependability; a safety rating addresses crash protection and rollover resistance. NHTSA’s 5-Star Safety Ratings do not establish whether a car is likely to need repairs. NHTSA also limits certain comparisons: frontal crash ratings can be compared only between vehicles in the same class and within 250 pounds of one another. Overall ratings follow the same limit because they include frontal results. Compare ratings for the specific vehicles rather than treating a safety score as reliability evidence. NHTSA explains its 5-Star Ratings.

What to check when choosing a used ES or E-Class
A model-level reputation cannot tell you whether one used car was maintained properly, repaired correctly, or has an unresolved problem. Before buying, assess the actual vehicle and match the evidence to its year, trim, powertrain, and ownership history.
- Check recalls by VIN. Use NHTSA’s recall lookup to identify open safety recalls for the specific car. Confirm with a dealer whether any required repair has been completed.
- Review the service and vehicle history. Look for regular maintenance, documented repairs, gaps in records, and consistency between the history and the car’s condition. A vehicle-history report can be an additional check, not a substitute for records or inspection.
- Arrange an independent pre-purchase inspection. Ask a qualified mechanic to inspect the car, review any diagnostic findings, and flag repairs that may be needed. This helps evaluate the individual vehicle rather than assuming a brand-level result applies to it.
- Compare like with like. Match model year, trim, powertrain, mileage, and ownership period when considering reliability reports or repair histories. Do not treat raw complaint totals as a per-car failure rate; sales volume and vehicle age matter.
- Verify the costs and coverage that apply to that car. The cited evidence does not establish a directly comparable ES-versus-E-Class total for maintenance and repairs over a defined ownership period, geography, trim, and powertrain. Check the vehicle’s warranty status and obtain service-cost estimates for the exact configuration and location.
Does the ES or E-Class have the better reliability record?
For a shopper comparing the 2025 models, the balance of the cited evidence favors the Lexus ES: Consumer Reports places it above its model-year peers and the E-Class below theirs, while J.D. Power’s 2026 brand study gives Lexus the strongest premium-brand dependability result. The J.D. Power finding is not a direct model comparison, and the comparison-site composite is a separate secondary measure. For other model years—or a used car in particular—check year-specific evidence and the vehicle’s own history rather than assuming the same result applies.
