The SC and IS C use retractable hardtops; the later LC uses a soft top. Their years, powertrains and price positions differ, so the right comparison depends on which car you’re considering and its condition.
Which Lexus models have been convertibles?
The main Lexus convertible lines in this period are the SC 430, the IS 250C and IS 350C, and the LC 500 Convertible. The SC and IS C are retractable-hardtop cars, while the LC is a soft-top convertible. Lexus’s SC archive lists U.S. SC 430 model-year entries from 2002 through 2010, including Pebble Beach editions for 2007–2008.

SC 430: the earlier Lexus hardtop convertible
The SC 430 is the first of these three lines in the U.S. model-year sequence. Lexus’s archive includes model years 2002 through 2010. Toyota’s global history says SC 430 production was discontinued at the end of July 2010. The different 2001 and 2002 start dates sometimes associated with the car reflect different frames: Lexus UK reported its European debut at the 2001 Geneva Motor Show and planned U.K. sales for July that year, whereas Lexus USA’s archive lists U.S. model years beginning in 2002. The U.S. archive also identifies Pebble Beach editions for 2007 and 2008. Those special editions are useful to note when comparing listings, but verify the equipment and condition of the specific car rather than assuming a trim name guarantees a particular present-day value.

IS 250C and IS 350C: two engine choices
The IS C arrived around the 2009–2010 period. Toyota’s global lineage records its introduction in May 2009; a Lexus USA announcement dated July 16, 2010 describes the convertible as introduced in 2010. These statements use different market or model-year framing, not necessarily conflicting dates. The U.S. announcement says the convertibles shared powertrains with their sedan counterparts: a 2.5-liter V6 rated at 204 hp in the IS 250C and a 3.5-liter V6 rated at 306 hp in the IS 350C. These are specifications from that period, not current-model ratings. The announcement is available from Lexus USA; Toyota’s IS C lineage provides the global introduction date.
LC 500 Convertible: the later soft-top flagship
Lexus announced the 2021 LC 500 Convertible at the 2019 Los Angeles Auto Show and said it would go on sale in summer 2020. Unlike the SC and IS C, it has a soft top. Lexus’s announcement for the 2025 model says the roof takes approximately 15 seconds to open and 16 seconds to close, depending on environmental factors, and can operate at speeds up to 31 mph. It also identifies a standard wind deflector and windscreen. These are manufacturer specifications, not a guarantee of operation time in every condition. In a July 2025 announcement, Lexus described a 2026 LC 500 Convertible North American Inspiration Series limited to 350 units and gave the model a starting MSRP of $109,300, including delivery, processing and handling. Start with the individual car, not a blanket ranking. The manufacturer information establishes the broad differences in roof type and the cited engine ratings, but it does not establish comparable reliability statistics or repair costs across these models. For a used example, inspect the car and weigh its condition, service history, equipment and asking price.

- Check the model year and market. Launch dates can differ from U.S. model-year listings, particularly for the SC 430 and IS C.
- Consider the roof you want. The SC 430 and IS C have retractable hardtops; the LC 500 Convertible has a soft top.
- Compare the specific configuration. The IS 250C and IS 350C have different engine sizes and cited period outputs; equipment and condition also vary by car.
- Budget around the actual vehicle. Do not infer current used prices, repair bills or reliability from historic manufacturer specifications. Have the specific car inspected and review its service records.
